After many many times of playing smash on kaillera, I learned that keyboard users have very easy and effective smash di. However, I am a controller user (currently xbox 360) which I am much more accurate with than the keyboard, but I've noticed that there aren't really many people on there who are good with slide di. While the xbox 360 controller stick is perfectly round, this actually makes it harder to slide DI (at least in my opinion). I struggled for a long time with slide di on the 360 controller, and finally I got fairly decent with it, but still not too consistent. Today, I busted out the console and tested out my DI on there a bit. On the console, I noticed immediate improvement in my slide DI. The octagonal shaped plastic that the control stick on the 64 controller sits in actually helps with slide di, as the corners between each side of the octagon act as a guide and a physical block for the control stick. So I applied my slide di the exact same way I was using for the xbox 360 controller - holding the stick like normal with left thumb, and holding the right side of the controller and moving the whole controller rapidly.

Now I'm going to buy a 64 to usb adapter so I can use the old 64 controller. Just need to figure out which one I should buy first.

A$: Thank you for your inspiration. Your slide DI is incredible!

so you're going to toss out a perfectly durable xbox 360 controller for the N64 one mainly for DI? Unless you plan to only play online, after a couple weeks of playing you'll notice your joystick wearing out on your N64 controller and then when you actually play on console, your controller's josytick will be crappy due to weeks of "Slide DI'ing" on online matches.

Not throw the xbox controller out of the picture. The joysticks on my 64 controllers are already kinda worn out from games like mario party and such, and they still seem to work fine. What exactly is the problem that you've had with them wearing out?

I'm just saying, if you also play on console, you shouldn't be using the same controller.

Slide DI will **** your control stick. I think you can buy replacement sticks or something though so if you're willing to do that go ahead. Of course pretty much anything will wear your control stick out after a while though.

If you're a serious console player you wouldn't want to kill the joystick of the controller you normally use on console for the sake of DI'ing good on online matches. Use a spare controller that you only use online and then have another that you use offline in console matches.

I'm still wondering if it's possible to get the sticks so worn out that they're completely unusable. Do they just get looser (like you'd have to physically try to keep the stick in the center), or can they actually get unusable? I've never really seen a 64 controller that messed up before, I don't think. As long as it's still usable it seems like they'll last a long time even doing slide di. My console just sits in a box unused basically..I don't really have anyone that has the desire to play with me and I don't know any hardcore smashers in real life. I have 2 good original n64 controllers so I don't have a problem using one of them for online pc play. And there's always the option of buying more controllers/sticks online; I'll take one apart some time and see what the joystick part looks like on the inside.

But by all means, please inform me on your experiences with completely worn out joysticks. Thanks.

i use 1st party controllers online and they definitely wear out after a while. The joysticks become very loose and the response becomes a lot worse. Basically, after a while the stick won't sit in the center and you have to press a lot harder to input a direction. I've worn out a bunch of controllers enough that their "unusable" at least in terms of smash. The sticks still work, they just aren't really good enough to play smash with. A good joystick usually will last me two or three months if i take good care of it but i also avoid slide DI in friendlies just because it's not worth wearing out the joystick.

Upside: Replacing the joysticks is easy and takes 5 minutes

Yeah joysticks always give out pretty easily on N64 controllers. There are some fixes you can find though. Simply opening it up and cleaning out the joystick cage did a lot for me. I feel like rotation the joystick 180 degrees (the only way it fits back in) might work for some time.

Its amazing what i found after opening it up. I bought it used. The previous owner managed to get a few strands of human hair inside it.

i know what's DI but what's slide DI lol, never ever heard of that
when you see someone moving out of Falcon's forward air, such as PD, that is slide DI. its done to make combos harder and to DI more towards walls. cheeseball described how to do it
