Should Nintendo lock characters until you buy both versions?

Is this a good idea?

Does anyone think it's a good idea for Nintendo to seperate the console's characters into making you buy both the 3DS version AND the Wii U version?

For me, I feel as why would they do this if I only wanted one version and can only afford one version instead of going out to buy either a brand new console or hand held just for probably 10 more characters before my system collects dust, just so I can get the exclusives.

Keep in mind this wasn't my idea (more so a friend's idea that he expanded unpon from someone else idea), my vote is no.

Mods I couldn't find a proper title, so you may change it as you please.

Sakurai confirmed long ago that the two versions would have the same playable roster.

However, if you're suggesting that both version can have all characters, but only if you have both versions (reminds me sorta of Mario Tennis for GBC), then I would not expect it to happen, and would not like if it did.

This would make nintendo millions. It wouldn't really be a good idea for publicity as it would just make the community hate them.
You've probably heard of the rage caused by the on disc content that was locked away in other fighting games.
Also, you can change the thread title yourself by clicking the Thread Tools button above the first post.
I'd suggest something like, Should Nintendo lock characters until you buy both versions?

Business wise, yes, it is a good decision.
Community wise, it's a bad decision.

You shouldn't be forced to buy something just to get the full experience of a game, especially if that requires buying a whole console.

So my point is proven, I'm going to keep this thread open for other opinions, just in case I come across someone that says "yes". I want to view their reasoning.

No, but here's my opinion on what would be good.

Nintendo keeps certain characters locked in the 3DS version, then have them as DLC when the Wii u version releases. The Wii U version will have the full roster.

I'm only getting the Wii U version so that would be really bad to me.
Same, i'd get the 3DS version if someone offered me a 3DS but I don't see myself getting one. The games coming out this and next year is going to fill a hole my wallet.

This sounds more plausible. I don't see them doing so but it makes much more sense, keeping spoilers out and surprising people. It'll be like, oh man... I didn't get character x in the game, then all of a sudden they are announced unlockable to keep the hype for the Wii U release.

I am getting both versions so I really wouldn't care, but it isn't fair to the people only getting one version so no they shouldn't.

I would definitly say no about this. Since both versions will have the same roster, I personally think they should have all unlockable characters unlocked immediatly after you get the Wii U version!

I can kinda see them justifying an exclusive character for people who own both versions.

Maybe a clone, like Pichu or something.

Nope nope nope.

I'm only planning to get the 3DS version, and this would break the deal for me. :urg:

This would be a bad move from about every angle except pure money matters. And even then it might still be bad. You dont want to make your fanbase angry and in general it would make people angry that they have to buy a game twice just to get a full game.

That said the only exception to this is if the game is everything a competitive player could want they would almost be forced to get both versions since all characters including dlc chars are usually allowed in tourneys. Pretty sure that is a good amount of money when you add the consumers who would doubpe dip simply for extra chars and not for competitive reasons.

If Nintendo/Sakurai did this, then I'd lose all interest in Smash 4. I'm only interested in the Wii U version and I'm on the fence about getting the game as it is (It still looks too much like Brawl). Locking certain characters just to make people buy both version would be a big "**** you" to the fanbase.

Now I'm not completely against bonuses for those who buy both versions. Metroid Prime allowed players who also owned Metroid Fusion (and a GBA link cable) to access an additional costume and an emulated version of the original Metroid. Something like that is fine because it's access to additional content, not access to the rest of the content.

On the other hand, a person does not deserve to celebrate Nintendo if they don't support Nintendo. But this doesn't sound too good regardless, Nintendo has always had a good relationship with the fanbase.

Although it'd be cool if faithful Nintendo fans got some extra stuff when buying both versions.

What? This is a consumer based system. If players and consumers do not feel like they are getting value out of their purchase they don't have to get the game. You can be a fan of Nintendo and not support everything they throw out. I stopped supporting the paper mario series due to sticker star and super paper mario. I was about to stop supporting fire emblem thanks to radiant dawn and shadow dragon and had to research more to think about getting the game and eventually I felt it was worth it. Similar story with smash 4. After the japanese version comes out it is time for evaluation on whether or not I think the game will be worth my money based on gameplay and if I would have fun with it. If I'm going to put it down in a month due to the lack of decent competitive play I might as well not get it and get games I am sure I would like such as hyrule warriors due to liking dynasty warriors or bayonetta 2 for the 2 games in 1 deal. These games rely on things other than replayability to be worth my purchase, smash however is a fighting game as well as a party game and the amount of replayability is important.

There are plenty of people who support Nintendo but don't want to buy both versions because money's tight, or because they'd rather spend some of that money on other games. Characters are the essence of Smash, and forcing people to buy both versions to get the full roster would really turn off a lot of people. Both versions are going to sell well without that kind of shenanigans because the 3DS has quality exclusive content and the Wii U will presumably have some as well, so it's neither necessary nor desirable to lock part of the roster. Extra bonuses like trophies would be fine, but they should leave the roster alone.

Didn't realize that not wanting to be forced to throw away money for stuff you might not even want just to get the full experience of a game means that you don't support Nintendo.

Lets please not flame eachother, as for everyone else I personally agree to. I just want to hear a reason on why someone would possibly say "yes" to this in specific. I mean, there has to be a big reason behind their answer, after all we know this isn't Cashcom or Micro$oft even though I support both, I'm not one of their suckers. I just don't see Nintendo pulling something like this off, it's really low in standards.

No.
I personally am getting both, but I know a lot of people who will only buy one version.

We don't want Nintendo to turn into Capcom, do we?
Sounds more like something EA would do. And my only experience with Capcom is Monster Hunter which there havent been any real problems.

Also anyone who thinks this is a good idea should burn in the depths of Hell. No Offense.

Consider this a hard no from me. When I buy a game with promised content, I want that promised content. I don't want to be told "Sorry, you don't get the game you paid for unless you pay for it twice."

They want but I can see DLC exclusive to WiiU in the future. Just because nobody will care about the 3DS one once WiiU is out

Sims 4 is missing a bunch of content without expansions and honestly as a sort of fan of the sims...sims 3 was only worth it with steam sales and expansions at 10-20$ at most. And even then it was a bit expensive.

I don't agree with something like this unless the idea is that Nintendo is going to release characters post release as DLC.

I really don't believe this at all. The install base of the 3ds and the earlier release date will give them a lot of units out, so just forgetting the 3ds seems like a terrible idea. Nintendo's pretty good about not leaving certain fans out in the cold, and I don't see them changing for this game.

I'm down for lets say, the ice climbers, to not be in the 3ds version at the start. But when the wii U version comes out, its like $5 dlc for the 3ds and free if you get the wii U

To those six people who said yes, you're all trolls. If Nintendo did that, it would be Street Fighter x Tekken all over again and could possibly mean the death of Sakurai's career.

I don't think it'll end Sakurai career, but it'll be a very unpopular move by him.

I highly doubt it would happen, and it would be against Nintendo's reputation if they did.

Even if I was to play devil's advocate and argue "yes", I... still wouldn't be able to come up with a good argument. I don't buy EA games because of exactly this kind of thing, and I don't see any reason why Nintendo would mimic the actions of a less-successful company. Especially since this is exactly the kind of behavior that results in that lesser success.

The only reason I'd see for characters to appear on the Wii U and not the 3DS is if the characters were free DLC that was released some time between the 3DS release and the Wii U release.

Only way this would work is if Nintendo releases certain characters as DLC for the 3DS version while the Wii U version will have the full roster and all the characters are free.

Other than that no. It's mostly a what you see is what you get kind of thing and I'm only getting the Wii U version and I don't want to waste more money just to unlock certain items

No. I don't think that would be fair because that would be asking people to drop more than $600 just for the complete version of one game. I think extra trophies and minor things like that would be a good bonus for getting both games, not something major that keeps you from enjoying the full experience of not one but two games.
