Given how many 3ds have been sold compared to Wii U I wouldn't be surprised if the active players for both consoles are relatively the same or even in the 3ds favor.Locking away content from people who don't buy both versions primarily hurts Nintendo's Japanese fanbase, as they will overwhelmingly choose the 3DS version, while other regions will be more evenly split between the two versions. Nintendo is still very much interested in its home market, some would say too interested, and won't want to risk alienating it when consoles in general are very much a niche market in Japan. Smash 3DS exists primarily for the benefit of the Japanese market as console sales have declined, while Smash Wii U is for the rest of the world, who still like consoles and prefer to play fighting games on them. The two versions exist in order for Smash to reach broader audiences than it would if it were only on handheld or only on console, and Nintendo has plans to incentivize purchasing both appear to be based around providing exclusive modes for each version. Plus, each Smash game sold is free advertising for the rest of Nintendo's franchises. Locking characters only alienates people who were going to buy one version. Such a practice doesn't lead to a better product, doesn't help consumers, and doesn't help Nintendo, especially in the long run, so why would anyone want this? There are so many better ways to make money off of Smash, both for the consumer and the company.
I think all paper mario fans have interesting stories with what super paper mario was and how bad sticker star went by now. As much as there were good games on the wii there were far too many that tried too hard to change their formula to attract the general wii userbase. And in at least two cases not for the better.Same.
