So I've been learning the ins and outs of smash and so far it's been really fun. But short hopping with these small and/or floaty characters has easily become the bane of my existence. Trying to lightly touch the jump button has thrown me off so much, sometimes I don't even press the button at all. I've become spoiled with characters like ganon so that now when I try to learn characters like samus I feel like my thumb is made out of lead. Sure I'm able to shorthop with samus half the time, but its not consistent and I don't feel im doing anything different from when I accidentally full jump.

What do you guys do to short hop with the smaller and floatier characters? What did you do to get used to the floaty jumps? Is their some hidden illuminati secret to short hopping that only the chosen may know? Should I just git gud?

Even though "light" press is a term a lot of people use to describe the sensation of successfully short hopping, remember it's all about the speed of letting go of the button. A quick strike of the button also works. Just don't go killer on it. You don't want to break your controller.

Yeah, when I first started learning tech skill I used to think I had to lightly tap the button but now that I am more accustomed to SHing I do push my Y button in with average force, you just have to make sure that you tap it quickly instead of lightly, as Problem2 stated.

Thanks a million, I had no idea it was based on the amount of time the button was held down. Testing it out, it not only seems to work better, but it feels much more comfortable then trying to lightly hit the button.

For future reference, the reason small characters are so hard to sh with has to do with "jump squats". When you push the jump button, your character crouches down for a split second before jumping. If you let go of jump while they're crouched down, you sh. If you hold the button throughout the squat, it's a full jump. This timing varies from character to character (which is why sh are easy with falco compared to fox).

Jump squats are important to remember when learning to wavedash, as you cannot input the air dodge until the jumpsquat is over. This makes shorter jumpsquats easier to wavedash than longer jumpsquats. That's why wavedashing with Fox is much easier than Falco because Falco has a longer jumpsquat.

This is all the opposite for me lol everything is easier for me to do with Fox than with Falco. I do play them both, so I have the experience, but that might just be the Fox main inside of me talking and thinking it's easier.

As for the OP, Kankato is correct.

When it comes to characters with fast jumpsquats, I basically push Y and R at the same time. Piece of cake. It's the slight delay you need with the heavy characters that always throws me off...

Reading this has actually helped me out a little too. I have been having trouble with my short hops in general (I think that it's pretty tough to do, but then again I have been tapping it lightly, not quickly or doing it during the crouching animation) so this well help me with shffling.
