Um, I tap the jump button. Maybe "tap" is the wrong word. If you tap too hard, it wont work. I think it's more of the length of time you hold the button down. A quick light press and you short hop. You can see the difference between tapping jump or pressing and holding jump down for a longer period of time. Tap = short hop while press and hold = full jump.

How else am I supposed to explain short hopping? :ohwell: I remember I learned to do it ages ago using Falco (not a typo, I do mean space animal Falco) because his short hop and full jump are so drastically different.

Hope you get the hang of this because you're right in saying that this stands in the way of you improving your C. Falcon.

Good call on the hot plate, the best advice I heard was that it's not how fast you press the button, but how quickly you get your finger off it.

yeah that finger on hotplate is amazing advice, its not how HARD you press it (i press my buttons very hard but i still short hop) its how fast you can press the button and get off the button... its speed not force

I'm surprised no one has said it, but short hop only works if your finger leaves the button before your character leaves the ground. so falcon is easy since he takes like 5 or 7 frames [or something] to jump.

I find x/y works easier than control stick and it helps that you use x/y if you are right handed too.. because your right hand is more dominant.. Also, if you use the ctrl stick for jumping you might have trouble with things like SHL with falco, because you might laser in the wrong direction half the time.

Just go to practice mode and make a goal. First, try maybe 5 short hops without a full jump. After you can do that, then do 10 without a full jump, then 15. Try it with both running and stationary hops.

There's the "slide" method, where you kinda just slide your thumb off the button. But I recommend the quick tap better.

The only time I ever slide to is to SH double laser with Fox.

Edit:

If you play piano, think staccato notes.

Theres no real way for us to tell you how to be better at it
just press the button quickly
and practice a lot
try it Short hopping with an easyer character first
like Bowser

Ya well short hopping is easy and you seem to have plenty of good advice in doing that, I thinking SHFFLing is hard cause i can't ever tell if its my imagination or I'm actually doing it right and shaving that lag off, its so close to call.

I've never found short hopping that hard really, I can short hop with every character without messing up once o.o

you could try what I do tap the edge of the X/y button with the tip of your thumb, I wouldn't recommend it though because when I first started doing this after a while my thumb was hurting pretty badly (it doesn't hurt at all anymore though).

We cannot give you tips to improve short-hopping. The only thing we could say is for you to practice. You might want to try characters with easier short-hops first, then work your way up the list. (For example, trying it with Falco or Bowser, then Marth, then Fox.) Otherwise there aren't any tips. It's not how lightly you press the button. You must press it quickly.
