Shield Stun

I'm curious: In Smash 64, is there any way to shorten the shield stun you suffer after being hit? Or, is there a "right" way of getting out of it? Are there things you can do that make it last longer/shorter? I've always thought that after you're hit, there's no way of altering how long you're stuck in shield stun. I know you can Up-Smash, Up-B, or jump out of shields, but is there a way that you can do it even FASTER (i.e. decrease the shield stun you suffer)? If anyone knows if this is possible, please let me know. Thanks.

Yeah, don't shield. ¬.¬
In all seriousness, getting hit while shielded is often a worse thing than getting hit. They can set up shield breaks from characters like Kirby and Ness, and if you're Jiggs, well...you're just dead. It's often better to just take the hit and try to DI out of the combo. If it's a drill...well, drills are relatively easy to DI. If you're facing characters like Falcon...eh. Falcon has a good time against shielded people :lick:
Really, it's just something you learn from experience what to do about fending off oncoming attacks. There's really nothing you can do about shield stun itself.

Thanks for the reply - yes, I know that the best thing to do in general is to avoid being caught with your shield up. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing anything obvious about "speeding up" the shield stun (or negating it entirely). Well, now that I know, I can safely say that the only time you'd really WANT to shield is if you're trying to block DK's charged punch or Samus' charged shot. Yes, you could also jump out of the way (that's probably a better idea, actually), but shielding in these situations would be tolerable because your attacker would also experience considerable attack cooldown, leaving you time to put down your shield and keep fighting.

Yes.

As Yoshi, you can shield 3 frames before being hit. The shield stun is greatly reduced
or you can have a short time of invincibility by holding shield for 2 frames or less

I think I saw a video of this being done in one of the sticky threads here - I believe it was Yoshi standing at the edge of Dreamland and Fox was Up-B'ing towards the ledge. Yoshi blocked it and almost immediately popped out of his egg to KO Fox. It looked pretty neat.

However, doesn't pressing the shield button automatically make your shield go up for a "minimum" number of frames? How are you supposed to figure out exactly how to hold it or press it in order to make Yoshi do this? You said that the invincibility occurs when you hold the shield for 2 frames or less; I would think that just by pressing the shield button, the shield is raised for MORE than that length of time. Perhaps I just haven't experimented enough with Yoshi yet.

It's pritty simple. You just tap shield right as you're about to get hit, just don't hold it. Yoshi players take advantage of this by either jumping and then doing an aerial, grabbing, or upsmashing at the same time. It basically absorbs their move and lets you do your own.

And in general you can escape your shield with certain moves faster than others. For example, jump cancel shining out of your shield with Fox or upsmashing with Falcon. Some other good examples:

Samus' UP B
DK's UP B
Upsmashes in general can usually be done quickly out of shield.

most up direction attacks can be launched straight out of a shield. but the chances are you'll get grabbed before that.

Alright, why didn't someone say this before? This pretty much answers my question completely - I wanted to know if there's a way to cut down on shield stun after being hit, and it looks like there is...I guess certain moves break the shield faster than others. That's EXACTLY what I wanted to know.

Now, for more questions:

Does holding the shield button as you're trying to escape the shield make a difference? For example, if I'm Link and I'm trying to up-B out of a shield (I'll get grabbed by a decent player before I can do it, but anyway...), will I be able to perform the up-B faster while holding the shield button? Slower? Same? I'd just like to know if holding the button while trying to up-Smash/up-B/jump out of the shield makes any sort of difference.

Also, is there any site/thread that contains frame data for breaking shield stuns? If there is, then that's where I'll go - I'm just curious to see which moves are the best for escaping shields.

Thanks to all the previous posters.

doing attacks out of shield doesn't end shield stun early, the stun by that point has already ended. those are just the fastest attacks to do out of shield.

the only way to reduce shield stun is with yoshi. that has already been explained.

of course you could always just do your best to not shield :)
