A set-up in Brawl terms is an attack or a strategy that enables or at least makes more likely an additional attack. Since Brawl really has a few number of true combos, set-ups are as close as it gets.

A good example would be MK's D-throw to Tornado. Not guaranteed, but it's fairly likely if the opponent doesn't respond correctly.

One that you will hear a lot about are IC's setups into their infinite chaingrabs. They don't really have too many of them, but desynched Blizzard could be considered a solid one.

EDIT: Lol, unless you mean a set-up irl, which usually just means a Wii+TV :)

Setup is usually a move with a "X" percentage used to set up another move. Like Mks dtilt to grab. Although their are some set ups that do not require the opponent to use a move at all. Say if you fighting a kirby player with Mk. If the kirby is being aggressive you can shield a incoming back-air(if poorly spaced) and then punish it by grabbing. For that grab you have a vast amount of options.

Just think of it like this
Move x sets up well for move y (like said dthrow > nado)
Then move x is a setup

Yeah, but what is the definition of "setting up well for X" ?
Any move that doesn't combo into the next can be shielded/dodged afterwards, so what good is the term "setup" then?

It just improves the likelihood, or puts the opponent into a forced defensive position. If they HAVE to use a defensive option, then they cannot be offensive. Brawl is all about minimizing your opponent's options.
