Has anyone noticed that during the Item, Stage, and Assist trophy demonstrations a little franchise logo accompanied them? It's pretty interesting, because the majority of the franchises without a confirmed character, simply showed the smash symbol. Some notable exceptions were the Pilotwings franchise, Wario franchise, and the Nintendog franchise. This could just be another case of the city folk stage in brawl carrying the AC logo, but who knows? Could they be hints at future characters? What do you guys think?

WarioWare confirmed to bring back Wario was a dead ringer since the Ashley Assist Trophy. Oddly, Waluigi was also labelled with the WarioWare logo.

The press kit pics also confirm Earthbound is returning thanks to Mr. Saturn and there will be Namco representation thanks to the Special Flag, which could potentially pull in even more classic arcade franchises.

What do you think about the Pilot wings logo though? That one showed up a few times in the direct. Kinda weird.

Also Find Mii has its own icon. I can't imagine that being the icon for actual Mii characters. I'm pretty sure that stage is the only Mii integration we'll see.

Another stage in brawl that had its own logo was elektroplankton, though there was no playable character from that series.
However, seeing as how the jetpack from pilotwings was also included...it's hard to say.
But then again the pitfall item from animal crossing was in brawl which lacked an animal crossing rep.

I doubt we're going to see a Pilotwings character in this game.

Also, the Polar Bear being an enemy in Smash Run confirms that the Ice Climbers will eventually make an appearance. :icsmelee:

I noticed that too. It kind of looked like a placeholder IMO, same as the Pilotwings stage. Both logo's looked rushed and incomplete. Maybe they'll eventually change to Mii logos.

The icons unfortunately killed my hopes for a certain character though. I noticed that Saki's icon was still the Smash Bros. symbol, rather than something representing Sin and Punishment. Maybe there's still hope for a playable Sin and Punishment character (which could be Isa at this point), and it's a placeholder to avoid spoilers, but I'm not going to get upset if it doesn't happen.

Pilotwings is considered independent from the Mii franchise. Maybe you could consider Resort a "crossover" at the least.
Do you know if there were any original Pilotwings characters in Resort? I've never played it, I just knew that Mii's were playable in that game. Made it seem like they shifted the focus. Even if it is a crossover, if they are playable it would still probably be heavily associated with Mii's.

Captain Falcon's practically been confirmed thanks to Samurai Goroh returning.

The SNES Pilotwings had indistinct pilots... piloting the vehicles as well as a penguin character that dives through the air for bonus games.

Pilotwings 64 had two captains per gender per weight class. Lark and Kiwi (light), Goose and Ibis (medium), and Hawk and Robin (heavy).

Pilotwings Resort completely throws its OCs out the window and replaces them with Miis. The locale, Wuhu Island, is also representative of this.

I've compiled everything I could dig up in the Direct, plus the 250+ press pictures. Bare in mind I'm only doing series with unconfirmed veterans or new series.

WarioWare:
The inclusion of Ashley seems to confirm Wario is returning, as she has Wario's symbol. So does Waluigi, even though he's more of a Mario character.

EarthBound/Mother:
The Franklin Badge and Mr. Saturn both return as items. This pretty much confirms as least one of the EarthBound reps is back, most likely Ness.

Kirby:
The Halberd returns as a retro stage in the Wii U version. As we all know, this is Meta Knight's ship, which probably means he's returning.

F-Zero:
As I said before, Samurai Goroh returning seems to indicate Captain Falcon is back.

Pilotwings:
One of Nintendo's oldest series is represent by a biplane. Could a stage and the Rocket Belt mean anything for a playable character?

Nintendogs:
Represented by a single stage in the 3DS version and the bulldog assist trophy. Although doubtful, could one of the dogs be joining?

Find Mii:
Represented by a stage in the 3DS version, as well. But it seems a Mii will always be caged during the fight. It's been unconfirmed if this Mii will be random or not.

Balloon Fight:
Represented with a stage in the 3DS version. Villager's "Balloon Trip" move may conflict with a inclusion of the Balloon Fighter.

Namco:
The most mysterious of the bunch. The Special Flag from Rally-X and a Boss Galaga appear as items. Could this signal that a Namco character is joining in, too?

Animal Crossing and Pictochat had their own icons in Brawl too but only had a stage each and Animal Crossing had an assist trophy and item. It doesn't necessarily mean anything character wise. Hell, even Nintendogs has its own symbol this time around thanks to its stage.

I don't see why they'd include an incomplete icon, especially seeing that they used Diddy and Lucario's brawl mugshots on the damage counters. If it's not done, they just wouldn't put it in.

I don't think they look any worse than Little Mac's icon, which looks completely crappy and out of place compared to the other icons.

I think it's just as you said in the OP; stages get universe icons just like characters do, as seen from Brawl's icons for Animal Crossing, Electroplankton and the DS.

I doubt there'd be a Nintendogs playable character, for reasons of harming realistic-looking animals. It's the same reason Nintendogs are always seen in the foreground and background, but not alongside the playable characters. And if there was a Pilotwings character, they'd surely use that rocket belt which has become an item for all characters to use.

I'm actually starting to think there's going to be a pilotwings rep in this game there's lot of pilotwings representation going on in this game. A stage, an Item, a symbol. It's not a definite obviously but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened.
