Link to original post: [drupal=2385]Learning something new, for an entire year. Starting tomorrow[/drupal]

I have decided I am extremely bored with life. This is an attempt to make it better.

My goal is to learn something new, every day, for an entire year. Whether it be as simple as tying a knot, or cooking an awesome meal. Something to do with origami (such as a swan <3 something I've always wanted to learn) or other craftsmanship (my roommate is a sculptor. Maybe I could have him show me how to make something basic, but useful. Like an incense holder.
)

September 16th, 2009
Because my last one is a huge challenge, today I decided to learn how to make an origami crane. Right now I have 2 made, but I really want to MEMORIZE the steps. So I'm going to make as many as it takes until I know how to do it by heart. :)

Today, after some replies were given. I started to learn how to shuffle (specifically, Melbourne Shuffle... for those who don't know)

I started with the Running Man and the T-Step, I will be practicing this daily and may eventually get deeper into it. (Right now I'm just learning the basics)

So this is one that will go on for weeks, months, and maybe longer. :)

I started this today:
September 14th, 2009
Today I learned how to sign Solfège. This has made it extremely easy to remember the order. For the first time ever, I've been able to sing it backwards, and mixing it up as I go down. I find this both useful and awesome. :3
EDIT:
For correctness, I learned Tonic Sol-Fa:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonic_sol-fa

EDIT 2:
I might also add that we learned Fah a tad different. We learned it as a thumbs down sign. =p

Sounds kind've fun, kind've not. The only reason I'm really replying to this is because apparantly you caramel dance at tournaments, making you one of the best people ever.

Also, good luck with this, sounds rewarding, hopefully you'll learn all kinds of cool stuff!

Now the only problem I can find with this is..... I have no idea what to learn.

So community suggestions may be nice.

Just don't give me stupid things like "how to build an airplane".

How about building a basic smoke bomb? I've done it before. I don't remember exactly how. It's really fun to do in a park and watch people go "WTF?"
Don't get caught.

-Learn about a series/game you've considered playing
-Learn average heights for various nationalities
-Learn about diseases you have only heard of
-Learn to make a perfect bed. (sheets/blankets etc.)
-Learn about the history of Girl Scouts and/or Boy Scouts

That's all I got.

Saw it on Youtube, already know how and have done it.

1) If I considered playing it, I already have.
2) Not interesting enough for me
3) Maybe
4) I was raised with a mother who has OCD. I think I have this down to my her standards.
5) Ehhhh..... if I get desperate. :x I hate both...

How to build a paper airplane.
You smartass..

Back in 4th grade I had a multitudes of books for how to construct different models. I've basically done over 110 models, and memorized the ones I liked/worked best for me.

So eh.... been done too much in my life.

you will learn something new every day thoughout the course of normal life. dont even think about it and youll probably learn like 10-20 to be perfectly honest.

whether you remember those things is another issue though :)

i mean honestly i think of today for me...

I learnt chicken+mayo sandwiches are really messy when packed
Xat chats do not work in the maths building here
my teacher is available to let us open lecture threaters for after hours access if we ask nicely :p
I have an easier time starting a presentation if i dont actually introduce myself first or greet the audience
youtube downloader converts REALLY fast
my friend has 5 FB accounts he uses to ***** food for the FB game restaruant city
Moomba is in SA

and probably a lot more... All things i definitely did not know yesterday, and will likely remember them for the rest of my life

I agree, although that might take you more than a day.

I love how people are giving me tasks that could take years. xD

I have a day, most of that day (except for weekends) is spent at school.

Right now I'm brainstorming what.. (I don't want to cheat and state I learned... Evermore by the Foo Fighters...because I learn a new song almost every week, sometimes in a few days xD)

You can learn the running man step and the standard shuffle step in a day if you look up youtube tutorials.

No johns.

Also, learn to moonwalk.
It took me like, 5 minutes to learn, its not hard and its slick as.

I learned how to moonwalk with a group of like 10 friends back when MJ died.

*looks up Youtube Tutorials*

I'm going to feel stupid starting off (since I basically despise the whole genre of dance) but I really do need to learn my thing for the day.
(With that said, I have a real respect for the dance, I think it just looks stupid. :3 )

I may also record these (I plan to learn it, and since I am documenting it I'll always remember what I learned. So I can record a short video each day displaying what I learned).

That is if people actually show any real interest. xD Which I doubt.

/watches people say "do it" just because I doubted -_-

It seems like a really bad idea because while learning individual things is great, practicing is what makes them worth doing.

Learning to cook a great meal is good, but that won't help learning to cook OTHER meals as much. Learning a new language, for example, takes weeks.

I feel exactly the same way :)

It's such a dumb dance, and looking at it objectively, it seems stupid. I guess drunk people are easy to impress.

My point is to be varied in many small things.

Knowing myself, about halfway through I'll probably duplicate things. Just from myself being to lazy to check it later down the road. (Duplicate ideas, not exact things)

Everything I learn, I do plan on practicing during spare time. Obviously mixing it up. I'm still practicing the Tonic Sol-Fa, and that will be no different. After a time I will obviously have too much on my plate to continue practicing, but I'm also much more fluent with mixing up and naming the Sol-Fa, and it's only been two days. It's not something I'll easily forget, especially since I'll be using it every other day for Chorus.

I've tried to take up at least the extreme basics of Shuffling and am at least learning the Running Man Step. I'm actually serious enough to where I signed up on a Melbourne Shuffling forum. Not only to go through and read for help, but I'm also watching videos on YouTube.

Whether or not I like it before I try it, I treat it with the attitude that it will be something I will enjoy and want to pursue. If not, I always have the day after that to find something. Or the day after that, or the day after that. ;) I won't like everything I try but at least I gave it the honest effort.

do eeeet hah

on a serious note play the drums if you dont already
Oh god, the day I can play the drums if the day that there is world peace.

I feel exactly the same way :)

I don't see it as a dumb dance, it just looks dumb to me. <_< I really can't explain that. I don't look at it and go "that's stupid", but I look at it and laugh. Just because of how it looks. (I guess that's about as far as I can explain)

That said, it isn't what I'd call easy in any sense. So again, mad respect to anyone who can shuffle.

Thanks for that post.

I think I'll have to cheat this, maybe make it every week... or start finding things to learn. :(

I want what I learn to be something I can show, not say... so facts (293 ways to make change for a dollar) are a no go for me...

Ugh........ I can't think of anything. D= I suck with thinking of stuff I know nothing about. LOL

There's no reason every day has to be a super original idea. Cooking is a good example of something that you can spend days and days on learning different stuff.

I forget what it's called, and I don't know where you live to know how viable an option it would be for you, but you could look in to that organization that builds inexpensive homes for homeless families. You'd learn how to build a house and help people at the same time =)

Except I genuinely hate people and would never do that.

Also, I want to be original, it's more fun. xD But I think I may have to break my own rules from time to time.

Or give myself a day off here and there to practice what I learned that week. =p
