Samus matchup

I've been told that this matchup is really slanted toward Falcon. My scrubby friend beat Darrel in friendlies and he thinks so too. I suck at it. Things don't combo like I was and grabs are useless. What's your approach to it?

edit: I'm gonna watch some Hugs vs SS matches, because I remember them being super close, but I also remember not understanding it at all.

Grabs aren't useless. You get guaranteed uairs if you uthrow at low to mid percents, and from a dthrow you can uair or even knee if the Samus has poor DI.

I wouldn't recommend HugS vs SS as the best example to learn from. HugS uses way more up-Bs and grabs than other Samus players, and SS is a minimalist who relies a bit too much on reads in that matchup IMO.

I think these are more useful to watch:

Thanks! I've always thought SS played a little bit crazy. He doesn't even use NAIR against Samus! I agree with what you said about grabs, was just using hyperbole because I'm so used to grabs leading to kills.

Samus has no answer to your nair, even if she crouch cancels it you can shield in time to block whatever she tries to counter with. However, if she catches on to this then she'll start to grab your shield after every nair.
A big part of the matchup is to keep her in the air. You mainly want to go for stomps and grabs since she will be crouching/shielding most of the time, but if you get too predictable with your stomps then she'll nair u in the face. That being said, if you can trick Samus into doing an aerial or going into the air for whatever reason, then this is your chance to punish with uairs that hopefully lead to a knee.
If you get her off stage you might want to back off and just let her recover until you get a bit better with edgeguarding her because if you mess anything up off stage then you're probably going to lose a stock

okay okay okay, let's calm down here.

upthrow to upairs is really good. samus is basically useless in the air, so keep your upairs shorthopped and sweet so that she can't juke you with a bomb and then she lands, negating your advantage. it's the same thing marths do to her. keep her airborne.

there aren't many set-ups for knees against her except a blind read or a nair to knee around 70-80. it may not kill but you can set up for an edgeguard easily

try to avoid nairing a lot in this MU. it is so easily CC'd and worked with. wait until higher percents for that, mentioned above. try and get a couple backairs, or a grab, or stomp > grab and get her in the air, working up some % with upairs. it's a solid strat. at 0%, you can upthrow, upair, regrab. get her back up there; keep her above you

i used to feel afraid to go out there and interrupt her bomb recovery, fearing i'd lose my stock with a poor dj into another bomb, but you should try it. just interrupting one bomb cripples her recovery

there's also a downthrow to knee but it's sort of a mixup. like, if they DI it right, you can catch the dj and knee with a full hop. if they catch on to that or don't fall for it, try to sh the next one. it's not guaranteed so don't rely on it

those are my thoughts on the MU i hope it helps
