=S Follow up on a Counter? It's not a legitimate combo. It's really just seven damage, woohoo.

Plus Counter isn't that fast. I'd much rather just hit them with something.
It doesn't have to be a legitimate combo, nor does it have to do alot of damage. It's gonna relieve some pressure off of you, so you can go on the offense, and an offensive, well- spaced marth is pretty nasty.

What do u mean counter isn't fast? It does have some lag, but it catches people off guard most of the time, and you can follow up with a tech chase just like sveet said. Overall this is a good move, and shouldn't be overlooked.

It starts up in seven frames. Jab, Dancing Blade, dsmash, dtilt and grab are the same speed/faster.

but none of them work anything like it. all those moves take time and are only good at far range. if you purposely let someone in on your range you can bait their attack and counter it. It works well in match-ups where the other character can both space you and **** you close up (sheik, falco and fox come to mind). They tend to want to take the first advantage they can, "Oh you ****ed up your spacing time to come **** you with a combo!"

Grabs have absolute priority though. So.
Your still missing out on the point. What happens if u miss whatever move you do instead of a counter? You're going to get hurt. But countering has less risk if you know the opponent is going to attack. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this move and all marths should use it to some extent. I've seen ken use it plently of times. He doesn't overuse it, he waits for the right time, and theres nothing wrong with that.

I don't disagree that Counter has its uses, I just think that most of the time a grab would be much better.

what if they are above you on the platform? one solution is to move to the edge as if you plan to do something useful (or just to paint a big red target on your chest) then counter as they take the bait.

I really don't suggest using counter that often. The only match-up where it can really be abused is vs falco. My friend has a pretty decent (read: laser happy) falco, but even then he baits the counter and grabs about half of my counters. There is just less reward for falco, "Ok now i can fthrow you! Awesome, now its time for more lasers!"
