Sakurai's team are intense players, but is Sakurai?

I know there are people who remember the original SSBB site, before we had Sakurai's daily updates/blog. Anyone remember reading "How this game came to be made" ? In that short story, Sakurai said that he's recruited the best team he could find, and he knew it because their Melee records were off the charts due to constant game play during breaks and the lunch hour.
If Sakurai's team played Melee THAT much, they MUST'VE been intense competitive players. They couldn't of just played casual matches with items and dangerous stages thousands and thousands of times. They must've discovered the AdvTechs and started to completely anihilate eachother instead of playing like CPU Noobs. Don't you think?
This thread is kind of pointless, but I've been wondering..
Is Sakurai himself an intense Melee player? Can he hold his own with some of the best in the world? Or is he just someone who would just kick back, turn on the Fan, and just paper cut everyone?
Has anyone ever read anything that would answer these questions? Does anyone have any Smash Bros. Sakurai Research?

Please discuss.

Edit: If this read lasts about 5 pages before close (if it ever gets closed) , I'd like if you could all rate it.

the dev team most likely are just regular players.

in an article with NP about smash, the players the were writing had also had similar hours logged in smash, yet were debating cheapness of the c-stick and said that wavedash is "by far the most difficult thing to do in the game"

so, they're probably noobs, by our standards.

Eaode you shouldn't use the words "us" and "our" and "we" as loosely as you do.
Compared to most of the members on SWF, I'm pretty n00b.
Me and my friend Zack are the best people we know, and then I watch "Fox and Falco hardcore match" on YouTube and playing like that is my dream.
Edit: It put me to shame (mostly because I play Falco and he plays Fox most of the time. We switch from time to time), I'll find the video.

Hahaha.

Sakurai could probably destroy us all with Game & Watch.

While playing with his feet.

While drunk.

While hanging upside down.

While being punched out by Muhammad Ali.

If you practice with your main character for about 3-4 months, you can master the so-called advanced techs.

And then you'll realize that they aren't as broken as you tought, since wavedashing and l-cancelling doesn't instantly make you win the game :ohwell:

It takes a lot of deep thinking to win a match, i.e. predicting your opponents moves, to lure them into doing a certain move, etc.

Then you'll find out that the advenced techniques can help you only so much in a match.

LOL! Dude, after your "How Brawl SHOULD be played" thread I had instant dislike of you, but you just redeemed yourself.
I hope Sakurai is amazing. Because if he's amazing, Brawl will be amazing.

Well, thanks for the tips, but this is getting off topic.

And I don't want my thread to be closed.

lol Maybe he pwns anybody who challenges him! Okay probably not, but it does make you wonder some things. How well does Miyamoto do at Mario games, or how well does Yuji Naka do at Sonic games?

Yeah... that was an article about some of the staff in Nintendo Power, and that was in before Brawl was announced cuz i remember them wondering if it would be cool if somebody like Wario Made it into brawl.

So yeah, that was not about the Dev team for brawl

WOW REALLY GOOD POINT.

I'd guess Miyamoto is good at Mario games, I mean...Mario games aren't all that hard to be good at lol!
Anyways, I wonder if game makers actual play their games.
And not just once in a while, I mean, practice until they pwn.

I think he'll be like Miyamoto with Mario Kart DS. He thought he was good, but then he played some people online and got owned and realized he was only average at his own game. But I would love to play Sakurai. I don't know much about him, but I love both his games and his sense of humor.

Lol I never knew about Miyamoto getting wrecked at KartDS, that's pretty humourous.

Xeno, that would be scary and amazing all at the same time. Imagine if after he contacted you somehow and let you know it was him?
Oh man, what an honor.

Have you guys been rating the thread?

EDIT: SORRY FOR DOUBLE POST. -zomgz.

It would be an honor indeed to battle the creator, what if that was an event match where he programmed an AI to fight like he does

I think that it is quite possible that he is very good, but I think others on his team are probably better. Since he is director (Right?) he has to look over everything that is being done, while others have the job of playing, looking for glitches and such, thus, becoming very good.

But he'd have to be REALLY good to have any reason to do that. That would be cool though.

Yeh I'm guessing his team is better than him. He doesn't really have all the time that they do to be playing Melee. He also doesn't get the opportunity to play it like they do. Isn't he kind of just like the idea master + over seer of the project?

Darn, it doesn't fit. That would have been awesome, especially since I've quoted you twice in my sig. I just got the screenshot from Google and used paint to add in the picture of Sakurai and the text.
I really need Photoshop...

Likely that he's good, but more likely that his team is. As was stated above this^^^^^

EDIT: You forgot to black out his face. LOL
Then you wouldn't know who it is though, thus destroying the whole point of it.....so......

*Wonders*

He probably is more or less average I'd guess, but I don't know, I've known about authors who don't read their own books, directors and actors who don't like watching their own movies or tv shows, chefs who don't like to eat their own food...

the list goes on and on.

Imagine Sakurai playing and making comments like "That shouldn't have been in the game after all..." "I'm taking that item out in the next smash game!" "He will get serious nerfing in the next installment" "I can't believe I made that character so weak, no wonder no one ever uses him, I have to fix that recovery, and the air attacks... I'll put that on my to-do list for Brawl..."

Ok, maybe not, but you get the idea, it could be hard to play your own creation.

i fully disagree..

before i learnt adv techs i would ALWAYS play like this..

adv tech doesnt suddenly make the game 50x more fun. its still fun without these techniques IMO.

Wow I never thought of that.
If he played his own game constantly his mind would be filled with things to take out and put in. He could seriously nerf the next SSB, even though he's not making it =P .
It he was, he'd probably nerf it from playing too much SSB. Anyone get me?

I think those thoughts even though I didn't make it. But then again, I spend a lot of my spare time thinking of ways to improve things I have no control over.

So do I bud. I think we all think of ways games could be better while playing them, it's normal.
Wow, it some ways, it could REALLY suck to be a game designer/producer .

When I was little I used to re-write the parts in stories I didn't like XD... I do think it's human nature to try to fix things to better accomodate oneself (does that make sense??) I wonder what it's like to actually have the power to change those things...

Yeah, being a game designer could suck, specially designing for Smash, always trying to reach that seemingly unattainable balance... tweaks here and there EVERYDAY, constantly polishing...

What makes an 'intense player' anyway? Most people would say a competitive player, but I'm not entirely sure. Maybe they just enjoyed it so much they never felt the need to 'learn' advanced moves.

Though I could, in theory at least, go to tournies with my Link/marth, I much prefer whiping my friends at home, preferably with coke and lots of pizza on the side ;).

If Sakurai's team is that intense, then they probably figured out all of the glitches and problems before they even touched Brawl.

So characters like Kirby and Bowser will be much better, look what they did for Yoshi with the extra jump. In other words more balance between characters.

As for glitches.... they'll be gone! Invisible walls, fall through platforms (Like Corneria) and other messed up glitches will be removed.

As for wavedashing, they might do something with it so it isn't so broken. They might remove it, they might swap it for an instant crawl ability, who knows. Something will be done about the broken gameplay. Cause Fox being able to dash someone off a ledge with the Reflector just isn't right.
