Sakurai was asked if every character will return and this is what he had to say.

"I can answer that: no. We don’t have the time to fully recreate every single character who’s been in Smash Bros at this point," Sakurai explained.

"Adding new characters is not a simple addition – it’s really multiplication. The amount of work, adding a character is multiplied and becomes bigger and bigger as you go. We can’t because of the amount of work it takes. However, I do believe I understand that each character has its own set of fans out there who really like that character.

"So we’re not going to cut characters out of the way, we’re going to put in as many characters as we can, we really want to do that, because it's good for the fans and good for all of us. But in the event that we do have to cut some characters, I’d like to apologise in advance to those fans."

That's good news for sure. I'm not surprised at previously cut characters not coming back though. We will probably see 1 or 2 of them come back in some other form though.

This kinda brings me hope for Snake for some reasons. By the way he talks, it's like only time constraints block characters to return, so I think he won't let an original and interesting character like Snake go away.
Toon Link has no chance though

Toon Link and Lucario are probably done for. Lucas might be in the firing zone too. I really hope it won't go past that.

I don't think there will be that many cuts though because with Brawl, 4 of the 5 characters who were cut were the most obvious clones and Brawl really didn't have that problem. There were semiclones, sure, but in my opinion nobody felt like a wasted slot. Everybody had their own charm and enough differences between their counterparts to set them apart as unique.

I might still prefer newcomers in DLC rather than returning cut characters, honestly. Depends on the cuts.

That's why I said 5 or less.

Can't use time restraints as an excuse this time Sakurai, ya got this year and the next to get the game out, and if ya want to add characters later, look up a little something called DLC. Not to mention an infinite budget and the pick of whoever ya want from anywhere on your staff.

So you're telling us you wouldn't mind a half-assed game just to play it sooner, then buy the rest as DLC?

I read somewhere that they were going to keep the cast at approximately the same size as Brawl's, for balance purposes. It is safe to say that with the addition of Wii Trainer, Megaman, Villager, and the rumored Pac Man and Little Mac, quite a few characters aren't going to make it. Although, since it looks like they're working with the Brawl engine, I can't see how hard it would be to simply port characters over...

I can see Ike leaving and being replaced by a more recent Fire Emblem character, just like Roy was. Maybe Ganon could be the new sluggish swordsman.

Never understood why Jigglypuff even made it into the series in the first place and she supposedly barely made it into brawl so I could see her getting cut along with all of the other pokemon characters, aside from Pikachu, and being replaced with more recent PMs. Betting that the original N64 cast will return is obviously a more sound wager though.

Toon Link was a pointless addition; I really hope they'll do away with clones this time around.

Please Sakurai, make the best game you can, even if you have to delay. We waited for Brawl, we can wait for this.

Jigglypuff only got in due to his popularity in the anime long ago. But he's pretty much a staple of the smash bros franchise at this point and the way he fights is very unique compared to the other fighters.
I wish they'd save themselves the trouble of trying to differentiate the clone characters they include, and instead just make them exact replicas of the character they are cloning, but with a different character model of course, like with the Two Wario's in Brawl. Ya get your favorite moveset but the option of a different character. Toon Link was a cool addition because most Zelda games feature Link looking Toony, but ya just can't beat the badass young adult Link.

Nintendo damn near never makes DLC ya have to pay for.
And yes I would play the sh#$ out of it as is from what I've seen.
I would pay for DLC too. But if they rush the game, there's a higher probability of game imbalance, glitches, etc. And unless they release patches, which everyone knows Nintendo isn't fond of, we will have no choice but to play the version we are given. The only serious patch I can recall is the one from Mario Kart 7 that fixed the Maka Wuhu exploit because it was too big of a glitch.

I know gender in the Pokemon series is a confusing subject, but I think it's safe to say Smash Jiggs is female, or at least intended to be seen as female.

Jigglypuff can be both Male and Female and will look exactly the same despite their feminine looks.

Jigglypuff wasn't going to be in Super Smash Bros. Brawl from what I remember. Jigglypuff, Wolf and Toon Link were all added last minute towards the end of the games development. That's why you see them have their own little cut scenes and nothing really pertaining too the subspace emissary story.

Jigglypuff is male in standard costume and female in every other costume. At least, this was the case in melee and brawl. I think jiggs was exclusively female in ssb64.

PLEASE PLEASE DON'T CUT SONIC!
It may well happen, considering he's a third party character. You have to be open to that possibility.

I don't want Sonic cut. It's not only because I dislike cuts. It's also because of the storm of Sonic fanboys will cause if Sonic gets cut. :urg:

The only character which i'm 100% sure is getting cut is Toon Link. Next is Lucas then Lucario.

There were semiclones, sure, but in my opinion nobody felt like a wasted slot. Everybody had their own charm and enough differences between their counterparts to set them apart as unique.
But this time they are cutting characters for a different reason. Sure most of the cuts from brawl (2 are debatable due to that whole forbidden 7 thing) were due to being clones, but it sounds like cuts this time will be happening because of time restrictions and not clone considerations. If it were still clone issues driving the cuts, there would be no cuts. So whether or not there are many cuts or a few is a matter of how much time they have. If there are too many Sakurai would likely extend the deadline, but I don't see how 4 or even 5 would be unreasonable. Much more then that does sound like pushing it though because Sakurai doesn't want cuts.

Wait, adding characters is multiplication? Multiplication by what, the number of characters? That's what I'm going with, thus the number of characters is a quadratic function. Time to do some math. Okay so the number character frames on the rosters were 12, 25, and 35. Thus

a(1)^2+b(1)+c=12
a(2)^2+b(2)+c=25
a(3)^2+b(3)+c=35

After solving that system of equations we get (-3/2)*x^2+(35/2)*x-4=0. Thus when we plug in 4 we get 42. This is of course excluding transformations, but since we have had 0, 1, and 4 transformations the projected amount of transformations would be 9, which seems a bit high to me. So I'm going to leave out transformations and just say without them the roster size is 42. Thus we are getting 7+num_cuts new characters. It sounds like there will be very few cuts but there will be some so I'm going with 2-5 which results in 9-13 characters. Personally 13 sounds pretty high to me, and 5 cuts does seem kinda like a lot so I'm going with 3 cuts, and thus 10 new characters. I can definitely live with that. Let the flame war over the most worthy for the seven remaining slots begin!

Oh look I changed this
The only characters I am pretty much sure would get cut are Snake, and then less likely, Sonic.
Anyone else's chances vary in my opinion.

I hope both come back though.

Keep in mind, Sakurai has a lot more to contend with than just time constraints. Legal issues being a big problem (for guests), while Nintendo's other subsidiaries do get to say how their characters will be represented. As opposed to what we previously thought, it is not all up to Sakurai regarding Nintendo characters.

And to those of you saying "Do DLC!!!", that also takes planning and budget (and it is by no means infinite). I'm not saying he shouldn't utilize DLC, I'm just saying from a business standpoint, I can see why he'd be less enthused about turning to it right away.

I know that, but look at all of Jigglypuff's alternate costumes over the years in Smash, they're all blatantly feminine. Jiggly in Smash was made to be seen as female.

Well not all costumes (the Green Headband in Melee and the Sleepy hat in Brawl could go either way), I just think that they decided to give options for boy and girl. I'm pretty sure on the Dojo they left Jiggly ambiguous.
Unless Jiggly is a cross-dresser :troll:

I'm straying from my point as it is. What I really meant was that it was weird seeing Jiggs referred to as a he. "It" would be better.

I expect about 5 cuts or less, along with about 15 additions.
I agree, SSB4 will avoid looking downright worse than Brawl purely by numbers, I expect them to at least match that game's cuts and newcomers. Conservatively, that means five or less cuts, though the nitty gritty may come down to the SSB4 cuts being more severe as there aren't any replacements for the cut original sets, alongside a healthy dose of new characters. Because Nintendo can't afford any soundbites like "SSB4 has less newcomers / less characters / only x more characters than Brawl." This is a big game for them and they bought a huge chunk of Namco's development staff to work on it.

I as well hate to see that quote brought up time and time again that Sakurai is making a 35-man roster. If it were that simple, he would not have said it once in a years old interview and never spoken of it again when directly asked about the roster when the game is actually announced. It's clear Sakurai is doing all he can, apparently to the point of killing himself inside, to try and make the SSB4 roster as big as it can be. Brawl-sized simply would not cut it and would require huge cuts or no newcomers to be feasible.

I'm still leaning more towards 10 then 15 myself, but I'll certainly be happy if they surprise me. Regardless, I completely agree that this game has to have at least a slightly higher total then the previous.
