I'm back at Rutgers, and so are my tournaments. They're like before, except not.

Next event: Sunday, October 12

Brawl Singles
Sign-ups & Friendlies: 12 - 2 PM
Rutgers, Livingston Campus (NB/Piscataway)
Ernest A. Lynton Tower - South, Main Lounge
70 Joyce Kilmer Ave
Piscataway, NJ 08854-8040

Relevant links

http://maps.rutgers.edu/directions/nb.aspx

If you need anything cleared up, verified, explained, etc. ask me or any of the other Rutgers folks lurking around here.
And as a heads up to anyone planning on using the Rutgers buses, remember that it's a Sunday and they're running on a weekend schedule, and only come about every 30-40 minutes.

Rules:
  • $5 entry
  • 2 stock, 5 minutes
  • Double elimination bracket
  • Matches are 3/5 games with 4/7 finals
  • Advanced Slob Picks (first stage agreed upon by players or random neutral with double blind characters if requested, then loser/winner/loser picks stage/character/character)
  • Players may not counter-pick a stage that they already won on in that set
  • At the start of a set, each player may choose both a neutral stage to strike from the random select (but it will remain as an available counter-pick) and a stage to ban from the set.
  • In the event of the timer running out, the winner of the game is determined by stock, then percentage. A further tie (and subsequent ones thereafter) will result in overtime: a 1-stock, 2 minute match on the same stage. If this happens, please remember to set the timer to 2, then back to 5 when you're done.
  • In-game Sudden Deaths caused by suicide attacks (Bowser's Klaw, Kirby/Dedede's Inhale) also result in overtime.
  • Meta Knight's infinite cape is banned.
  • Stalling is banned. "Stalling: The act of deliberately avoiding any and all conflict so that one may make the game unplayable. Running away from an opponent to reach a better position is not stalling, while doing an infinite grab endlessly against a wall is. Any infinite chain grabs most end quickly after 300% has been reached so as to prevent excessive stalling."

Prizes:
60/30/10

Stage list:
A copy of this list will be available at the event

Random/Neutral:
Battlefield
Final Destination
Yoshi's Island
Lylat Cruise
Smashville
Pokémon Stadium 1

Counter-pick:

Frigate Orpheon
Halberd
Pokémon Stadium 2
Castle Siege
Rainbow Cruise
Brinstar

Mushroomy Kingdom I
Mushroomy Kingdom II

Green Hill Zone
Hyrule Temple
Yoshi's Island (Pipes)
Onett
Big Blue
Luigi's Mansion

As to why it's 2-stock 3/5, that's at the request of WoZ, who asked me to try out a new tournament format. That's also part of why there's only a $5 entry and no teams. Please give feedback on this new format. Also, feel free to discuss whether it should remain $5 entry or if I should bump it to $10. Teams will almost definitely show up at later events.

Also: WE NEED SETUPS. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN BRING ANYTHING.

If you have any questions, post 'em here, PM me, or AIM me @ mangowangobango. If you get stuck outside the building and need to get let in, call me @ 201 983 8754.

No, I bothered to glance at the SBR suggested list. I also bothered to put things like Pipes and GHZ in banned. Distant Planet I'll agree was an oversight. I fix later.

Have you lost your mind?
Obviously. I mean, Hanenbow banned? What is this madness?!

Your stage list is still EXTREMELY bad.

You're also hosting on the same day as TWO OTHER NJ TOURNAMENTS.

I'd gladly attend your events, but I'd MUCH rather go to Gaming World where they have a MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH fairer set of rules and no Kashif to beat to get 1st.

I would prefer this is on Friday because I'm not going to be on campus on Saturday. I'll bring my Wii with no tripping if you have it on Friday :).

As for the stage list for the following reason I think Jungle Japes, Green Greens, Pictochat, and Pirate Ship should be banned. Random events should NOT decide tournament matches. Dedede and Falco can chaingrab into the klaptrap, the apples randomly explode for bomb-omb knockback on Green Greens, Pictochat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xcojcb7ZMxc and Pirate Ship's bombs are either suuuuuuper devastating or suuuuuuper weak. Yes, there are a few safe spots on the stage but if you get hit off the stage right before the bombs start pouring down its going to be very difficult to avoid all of them. If Dedede is up by a stock he can chaingrab his opponent and hold them so they both explode by the bomb and both get killed.

Why Luigi's Mansion should be banned: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujLvRh_4JHQ&feature=user

Also, Norfair has six ledges to ledgecamp with. It's not stalling to camp on a ledge anymore then it is stalling for Falco to shoot lasers at Ganondorf from the other side of the stage.

Aren't Sundays supposed to be for doing work you should have done earlier in the week? lol But really, I always enjoyed having Sundays as a do nothing day, which is what I feel like they should be. But if enough people think Sunday is good, then I'll consider it.

I'd MUCH rather go to Gaming World
I don't mind. Honest.

Yea rot8 the stage list is very iffy.

I do like the idea of trying the 2 stock best of 5 match setup. Who knows this could make brawl tournaments fun so lets give it a shot.

Thanks for the reason dude. I understand. As far as my thoughts on the stage list go, all of what spam said is true. I dunno if Corneria was mentioned but sadly that's a bad stage too. I won't bother convincing you to ban Hanenbow just cuz I know your love for it xD I'll do my best to show up to these with my tv/cube. Thanks for running these again :)

As for the stage list [...]
Or you could leave it in my room, or yours and I'll steal it from Henry if he's there. This Friday in particular I've got appointments and errands, so I wouldn't be able to do it until later and I'm very much against late tournaments.

Also, how involved was no tripping? Someone told me it was complicated, but I didn't look into it myself yet. I was thinking that if we could get enough, we could advertise no-trip tournaments.

And at least you explained yourself. I'll look/think later cuz I'm at work, but no promises. <3 gay stages.

If you don't have enough no trip games to run a fully no trip tourney, you could save those wii's for finals.

Well I could leave it but since I want to participate in the fall ladder on AiB cuz top 3 or 5 gets $$$$ and since can't connect to WFC from college I'm bringing it home.

No tripping takes about 5-10 minutes to do if you have an SD card and Twilight Princess.

1 small vote for Fridays or Sundays here... This is because zodiac braves host weeklies on saturdays, impact is doing something this saturday as well as in two saturdays. If you instead did the other saturdays, it'd then overlap with the harry potter thing and the nyc monthly. Saturday is too popular as it is... Whereas if it weren't saturday i think i'd usually make it

Sundays would be best...if you have these on Saturday now you're only going to divide up the community around NJ which would suck

I guess I can do them on Sundays after this. But I don't feel like moving it, so tomorrow's still on, in case anyone planned on showing up.

Actually, this did happen, but the only people that showed up were PRiDE, Hac, and a new guy whose name I sadly forgot. So it wound up being friendlies and me helping my roommate re-case his 360 controller.

Anyway, first post edited. Next one's on Sunday, 10/12. The next next one might be on a Friday, haven't decided yet. The only fun stages left are Stadium 2 and Rainbow Cruise, and they hardly count as fun anyway.

POLL: Is 5 minutes a good time limit? I sort of want to drop it to 4.

I doubt matches will finish in 4 minutes >.> Sadly I don't think I can make the one on the 12th because I have an exam the 13th...idk if my attendance matters (prolly not lol) just saying. Dave you should come to Inui's tourney on saturday in princeton :)

I would've gone to this as well, me being Rutgers student and whatnot, but like cowtipper I too have an exam that day. I hope to make the next one, however!

<_< Norfair moved.

And if it's not one thing, it's another. You guys should study on Saturday, between matches, and/or Monday morning. Maybe there'll be people there to study with; it could be a tourney/study session. Or what if I started earlier so it could end earlier, like 10 or so?

Are there any other happenings I should know about?

Okay, hilariously enough, 10 minutes after my last post, I walk into class to find out I have an exam on the 13th, too. I guess Sundays aren't that great after all.

I think I'll stick to Sunday for now though, just to try it. But if I did switch to Fridays, what would be a good time to start? I'd like to start early, but people have work/class.
