When game design was good.

I want to kick the guy's *** who's been making me go through all this **** the entire game, not some Giant Space Flea from Nowhere that pops in at the last second and goes "ACUALY IS FINAL BOSS". I don't give a **** about the giant space flea, I want to beat up the guy that caused all this nonsense.
And that's why the final fight in Red and Blue should've been with Prof. Oak.
Which was going to be the case. If only...

I don't know why the refuse to add elements from the game that were suppose to be in the game in remakes.

That would have been a great idea for Fire Red and Leaf Green

If I'm not too late I'd like to throw a chip in for reasonings behind/against Tabuu as well.

Ultimately, my first reaction was a sort of gut instinct; I did not like the idea. Then I tried to reason with myself; why can't Tabuu be in the new smash as a playable character? Eventually, it comes down to a dirty word in the smash community; size. Commonly used as an argument for why some other notable character(s?) can't be in, it's very easy to imagine a shrinked down version of Tabuu. My issue with this is that while size in the Smash universe is scaled from the game's original universes (Olimar, Mario Vs Sonic, etc) to look more natural and believable, on the whole characters that have been added remained the same size, more or less. I would argue that while size from Smash to other franchises is *highly* variable, the size from games within the franchise are not. Master Hand has always been more or less the same size. Returning stages have also been more or less allows to remain the same. There are some discrepancies, certainly, but on the whole the games are consistent. I cannot imagine that suddenly changing, because it feels somehow wrong, like the consistency within the universe that had remained somewhat constant, had suddenly fallen apart.

The argument that Smash Bros deserves it's own representative seems odd to me in general. Why? Each character is meant to represent a franchise, or a part of a franchise, that Nintendo holds dear to each other, and Smash is the crossover game that they can coexist in. The series itself is insanely popular but it seems too meta and self-acknowledging for Nintendo to pull off. Don't get me wrong; I'm not against the idea itself, I just don't think they're quite clever or daring enough to follow through with it.

Another nail in the coffin is that Sakurai tends to be very humble with his own work; it's been noted that he didn't want to include more Kirby characters in Melee for fear of being called arrogant. In Brawl he did more or less on popular demand, but I do not think his opinion has dramatically varied otherwise. With this logic I cannot imagine him adding another one of his characters, specifically generated for the last game and only really appearing as a final boss, as a playable character. I think Tabuu's odds of returning are fairly good, but not as a playable character.

There is ONE thing I could see him as, if you are determined to see him playable. Perhaps if the wire frames/polygons/etc etc were made playable this time around, he would make an excellent final smash for them. That in itself is another argument I have precious little desire to debate or see, but it seems like a nice, logical middle ground for those who wish to play god in the smash universe.

Am I the only one that likes the pic of the day? It's way better than half the crap we get immediately after a character announcement. Ah well, I'm happy. :3

Wasn't expecting something significant nor did I think a reveal was the most likely case, but I'm still kind of disappointed. I would've at least thought the pic would commemorate Smash's 15th Anniversary in some manner, even if it didn't show anything new. Ah well, at least we got to see some more of Rosalina.

Also, new avatar. This is the third Luxray avatar I've used on Smashboards.

yes because we must have character reveals every two weeks or something

We just had Dedede 2 weeks ago and if there is no Nintendo Direct this week after all, a character being shown next week is probable. But that is just me being optimistic.

Even then expecting something amazing today was basically setting yourself up for disappointment. What we did get was Rosalina's side special confirmed and Sakurai acknowledging Smash's 15th anniversary. I'm good with that, especially after the Adventure Mode confirmation yesterday.

Well, that was expected. I can't say I'm disappointed, I'm just surprised any of you suggested Yoshi of all characters last night. He's got two games appearing soon, just seems illogical not tie him to one of those.

Frankly I'm happy Sakurai even bothered to mention the bit about older gamers. That warmed the cockles of my aging heart.
Shame it wasn't a newcomer people have been waiting said 15 years for like Ridley, K. Rool, Toad, etc, but what can ya do?

Woo, Luma shot. I guess.
Unsure if this is the least bit interesting since the video last month showcased this particular ability fine. Has a name at least.

Right, sorry, mate.

...that changes nothing. They still went "SURPRISE, the final boss is actually THIS GUY" at then end of all of them. It doesn't matter how they came into the plot, it's just the fact that they always betrayed Eggman at the last second and took over as the final boss. So instead of beating on the guy who actually caused you trouble the entire game, you just get to fight some generic godmonster who's guilty of nothing more than being woken up by a dude with a moustache. One of the psychological points of having bosses (or rather, final bosses) is so that you can "punish" the person who's been causing you trouble the entire game.

Replacing them at the last second with some Eldritch abomination is not only dissatisfying, it gets boring after the first time.
They've gone that route a lot, but it's worth pointing out that they've been getting away from it lately. Eggman was the final boss encounter for Colors (the Wii version, anyway), Generations and both episodes of Sonic 4. I haven;t played Lost World, so I don't know if the trend continues. Not sure I would count Heroes as an example of him suddenly being usurped, either, since he was NEVER the villain of that game. It was always Metal Sonic in disguise, and there's at least a cutscene or two that hints toward the twist. Haven't played it in years, though.

And, at least in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, it still worked as punishing the guy who put you through all that trouble. For me, anyway. It makes you hate Eggman even more. Not only do you fight and defeat him, but you also have to clean up this awful mess he made too? What a jerk! And Chaos completely taking over isn't really a surprise, it's telegraphed pretty early on. That's the point of all those flashbacks to the Echidna tribe, and the giant mural in Lost World.

People were seriously expecting something that big? Well, disappointment was imminent.

Still, today's a good picture. We got to learn more about Rosalina's gameplay.

Hi hi, fellow smashers! Nice to meet you all!
I am MetalAnonimon, and I come from the deepest realms of darkness to share, with you, my roster prediction for SSB4!
You are probably familiar with the image above... It's a presumed leak from some days ago. I can see, based on my own criteria... a 99.13% probability of authenticity!
Moreover, I like the graphic design too much for this to be fake!

Then, assuming this is real, I used plain, simple logic to deduce how the complete roster would look like, having in mind previous games initial/complete rosters!
After a little guessing...

...it naturally evolved into this! (39)
Bad news would be that the only newcomers are Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Megaman, Rosalina, Mii's (that's just a prediction of mine) and... a mysterious character I can't foresee?!
However, this one is no more than my safe bet!

An unknown guest? New incarnations to old characters? New characters overall...?!
I can see... I can see...

High possibilities of a new Metroid character! (Ridley?! We can dream...)
Positive possibilities of a new MOTHER/EarthBound character! (Masked Man!? Porky!? We can definitely dream...)
Medium possibilities of a new guest! (A Namco-Bandai character...? Pacman? Maybe we shouldn't dream that...)
Unexpected possibilities of an unexpected new character! (think of Mr. Game & Watch, R.O.B. and Wii Fit Trainer! I can imagine a "retro gaming" related one...)
Negative possibilities of replacing R.O.B. with a new character! (aka probably not happening ever)

For easy comparison, Brawl complete roster:

So? What do you think?

I agreed with this, up until you said 39 characters, we're getting 48-50

A measly 39 characters? That's so lame... so what? No character cuts so we keep 35 characters and we get 4 newcomers, which we did... so that's it?

People still only expecting a total of 4 newcomers. Even after we have four newcomers.

And Mewtwo isn't one of them.

Barely worth the hassle of going into the production of making a new game. They might as well of let Project M get an official international release and add two characters to it.

How is that so? Sakurai said he would keep the roster to a minimum, both for "quality over quantity" and 3DS limitations!
The bolded simply isn't true. The 3DS isn't limiting to the size of the roster. The only limitations Sakurai was having was implementing duo characters, as they put heavier strain on the 3DS' processor. An 8 Gig 3DS cart is more than enough space to hold ~50 characters.

Oh, maybe I expressed myself incorrectly. I was talking about this:
Kotaku: Should people expect returning characters, should they expect most of their favorites from Brawl to come back?

Sakurai: The reality of the situation unfortunately is that there are certain limitations on the 3DS, so we're forced into a situation where we may need to reduce some characters to a certain degree, but we're really working hard to include as many characters as possible

I remember this image. If it wasn't obvious it was fake we already proved it fake on /v/ because of Yoshi's portrait.

So, if I'm reading this right, you want Nintendo to work out a "deal" with the PM team and re-release it at 60$ with the new characters? The PM team can release characters themselves and the game is free.

You are not reading this right.

I am saying a measly four newcomers, the main draw of Smash bros, isn't worth the cost of production on a new game. Because four new characters is a crap amount for any fighting game.

A whole new Smash game and you'd only get two more characters than the free to play Project M. Doesn't seem worth paying $60 for a new version if there's no cuts and four newcomers...

Sakurai limiting the roster size because of the 3ds is borderline idiotic especially when the wii u can handle it. The smash series is a dang console series game only just going on to handhelds :/

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think I read somewhere on these very forums that Smash 4 was originally going to be handheld exclusive, but they decided to do one for the Wii U too.

Anyone have a source either proving or disproving this statement?

I was expecting Yoshi for the anniversary reveal to complete the original unlocked eight characters in the original Smash.

But because Smash is advertising the failing Wii U's games as well as the games for the 3DS, Ness and Captain Falcon could have been good choices as well (they may not be getting any new games forever).

Anyways, if Sakurai is releasing the game this year he really could be a little more ambitious with character leaks.

Why do people keep calling Mewtwo a newcomer?

Also, if we don't get any more newcomers than we have right now, I'm not buying this. I'll just keep playing Project M, since that adds characters to Brawl's roster that I actually care about (well, Mewtwo, at least).

I agree with the sentiment that we will have more than four newcomers. I cannot fathom there being less than 10, and I believe any roster prediction that claims lower than this is crazy, regardless of their reasoning. There would be nothing worse for the game than hearing it had so few new characters to offer in terms of marketing. I believe part of the reason we learned almost every new character in Brawl was because more new characters generates more hype. While I don't think we'll see most of the new characters before launch I do think we'll see more than four.
