So hey, I'm just getting into competitive Pokémon a little, and I've been messing around with this team. So far it's been really satisfying to use, but ends up dying hard against things it can't actually handle.
Jirachi @ Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 240 HP/160 Def/32 Spd/76 SDef
Impish nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Wish
- Substitute
- Thunder Wave
- Iron Head
So, I went with this Jirachi because it survives pretty much any types the rest of my lineup doesn't, and can be really annoying with Thunder Wave/Iron Head. Substitute's handy with all the status tricks that Pokémon often use, and Wish can save a previously nearly-dead switch-in.
Zapdos @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP/76 Spd/184 SDef
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Roost
- Thunderbolt
- Toxic
The other half of the Substitute team, this is the standard SubRoosting Zapdos, with Toxic. It can hit many things normally immune to electric (thus shutting down Jirachi's objective) with Toxic and run its normal SubRoost stall for a good while.
Suicune @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP/252 Def/4 Spd
Bold nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Surf
- Calm Mind
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
The Water/Ice/Fire/Fighting/Steel coverage half, Suicune can tank a lot of things that would eat Tyranitar, and then set up with Calm Mind, resetting any lost life or status effects and keeping tempo through RestTalk. Pre-setup, it's afraid anything electric and probably can't handle a Breloom ever, though. Post-setup, Suicune laughs at Thunderbolt and can literally stall a Vaporeon with a super Hidden Power to death.
Tyranitar (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP/40 Def/216 SDef
Careful nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Curse
- Payback
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
The Normal/Flying/Dark/Psychic/Ghost coverage half, Tyranitar can also switch into many elemental strikes that don't involve Water before setting up its other defensive stat. Payback probably can't work out against things like Scizor, but Tyranitar wants to swap out to Suicune in that matchup anyway. Otherwise, Cursing 3+ times makes Tyranitar nearly indestructible, especially with Rest to cover life and status effects.
Azelf @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Flamethrower
- Psychic
- Hidden Power [Fighting]
- Sleep Talk
Azelf's here to directly counter any threats my main defensive team can't power through with Substitute or Rest. It's unfortunately fragile and can't switch in immediately, meaning I end up having to sacrifice one of my team to move him in safely and make a difference. Expert Belt was chosen over Life Orb and Choice Specs/Scarf because I don't want to swap him out unless absolutely necessary. It's got decent enough type coverage anyway, along with its STAB'd Psychic. Azelf has recently been given a Life Orb for that extra bit of damage, since it will never have the time to set up. For similar reasons, Nasty Plot was removed in favor of a rather ballsy attack slot - Sleep Talk will allow Azelf to surprise Pokémon who typically rely on crippling Azelf with Sleep Powder or Spore before it can do anything.
Froslass (F) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Snow Cloak
EVs: 80 HP/252 SAtk/176 SDef
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Trick
- Spikes
- Destiny Bond
- Ice Beam
The Scarf'd lead Froslass. If given no real options, Froslass throws out Spikes to make it easier for the rest of my team to run through. Otherwise, it can Trick opposing setup types, Ice Beam any Dragon leads with Scarf making it definitively faster, and Destiny Bond other sweeper-type leads.
Starmie @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Trick
The Scarf'd lead Starmie. Clearly more versatile than the Scarf'd Froslass since my team doesn't mind opponents switching in at full life as it plans to either debilitate them anyway or outright one-shot them, and probably better equipped to remove big dragons like Salamence.
The main point of this team is to have fun with the Tyranitar/Suicune switch-off. Everything else I'm willing to swap out as long as it keeps with the overall theme.
