Result-based Matchup Chart

Greetings, fellow smash 4 enthusiasts and fanatics. This is a new attempt of a project I've started in Brawl but ultimately abandonned: a result-based matchup chart for all characters. No buts or ifs, just 100% pure, unbiased facts based on the outcome of tournament sets between the top placers.

Details on how results will be assigned and impletemented into the matchup chart will follow soon. The first tournament results that can and will be used for this project will be those of Hitbox Arena's Invitational Launch on the 20th September in NY, hosted by @juice.Doom

I've attached the tenative layout of the chart onto the OP. This one might change though because I'm not fully satisfied with it. The amount of characters in this game makes it difficult to put the chart into a neater, better arranged and more compact shape. I still put it in there so you guys get an approximation of how the whole thing will look like. Ideally, the blank spots will all be filled up with numbers and results after some time!

Idk how you handle even results, but Nario's Robin beat Jtails' Diddy once then the opposite happened in game 2. So...

I only take "full" sets into consideration. That means that at least two match wins of character X against character Y are needed within a set in order to be considered. If dabuz wins 3-1 with Rosalina [2 games] and Mario [1 game] against M2Ks Sonic the requirements for Rosalina to get +1 Point against Sonic are fulfilled. This isn't the case for Mario, so he'd gets no points. None of the examples you showed fulfilled the requirements [which is a pity as there could've been a lot of viable results from that tournament but counting single matches as a "full" set just doesn't make sense. Otherwise heavily favorable counterpicks could skew matchup numbers too hard].

I don't know what you mean by "no official tournaments". If you have tournament results then you can post them here. If there's a tourney / results thread and if you can give me detailed info on character usage then I can implement the results.

Wonderful project. If I may, I have a few suggestions:

- Make a formula for assigning weight based on entrants so more entrants = more power.

- Try to separate tournaments using different rule sets at first and when/if there is enough data showing not enough difference between them to merit keeping them separate then join them together. Separations would be 2 stock vs 3 stock, and "For Glory" rules (ie only FD/Omega) vs "Smashboards" rules (starters/CPs, expanded stage list)

- Add them to a read-only google docs spreadsheet and put think link i the OP! That way we can see real time changes to the matchup charts as you add individual tournaments.

I have tried that in the past with dissatisfactory results. If you have a particular formula in mind feel free to share it. I'm open to suggestions.

So I touched base with Ankoku regarding this issue. He previously made a chart of character ranking based on tournament placings/representation in top spots (top 8/16/32 or something). According to him, he just directly weighed the tournaments based on entrants without a fancy formula or anything.

At the same time he brings up a great point that "ZeRo blowing up some guy first round of a 200 man major should not somehow be more significant than doing the same thing at a 10 man local." And also he says that "Well, rather, I feel like matchups should only be counted if the players are comparable by some measure."

He brings up a good point there but its much more difficult to figure that out. You could try using the SWF rankings for weight or you could just do top 8/16 where players would be expected to be closer in skill than the first match of a 200 man tournament. Not exactly an easy answer here. You have quite the ambitious project.

Right now it's kind of arbitrary to be perfectly honest. Generally though, it's the placing that matters whether a set is considered elegible or not. I counted the top 5 of KTAR X for example because the tournament was more crowded than the other ones so far.
However, I will also say that I'm not very conservative about counting results for the chart. I'd rather have one odd result too much in the chart, than missing a legit one.

Because then strong counterpicks could skew matchup numbers completely.

Not too involved in the competitive scene, and I only have a cursory idea of how your chart works from a quick glance at what you did on Brawl. It's 4 AM and I may not be getting the full picture of what SamuraiPanda and yourself want.

However, if there are only a few standardized rule-sets/tourney types, you can probably do something easily in Excel. It may require a bit of back-tracking, but it would provide those wanted results.

For examples sake, lets say there are two types of tourneys: A & B. Recreate your chart in Excel 3 times. Label one of them for A, one for B, and one for Total. When you add results for Type A tourneys, put it in the A chart and so on for Type B Tourneys. Use the sum formula on the Total Chart to sum each cell's values in Chart A & B. This way as you edit Type A or Type B tourneys, the Total chart will automatically update itself based on the changes to A or B charts.

Once again, maybe I'm totally offbase on what you guys were talking about. But best of luck, cheers. Looking forward to seeing these results.
