It's so obvious this thread is going to turn into a huge heated debate over religion.
But why are there so many people against Christianity or rather, the idea of the existence of a god? I mean, you all need to just relax. I'm not religious or anything, but still. This is getting way out of hand.

The majority of us who don't believe in God don't just 'assume he doesn't exist.' We arrived at that conclusion through logical investigation and scientific examination of the evidence available to us, instead of just going with whatever answer 'sounds good' or the one we grew up with and then just selectively searching for evidence that supports what we took on faith (an insidious concept) to begin with. That is to say, we just said "I don't know," and then sought to answer it for ourselves.

If you do this you will realize there is no evidence to suggest that "God" (given a proper definition, not necessarily the Abrahamic God) is anything but a useless or contradictory (i.e. nonexistent) entity, let alone one deserving of worship.
Just so you know, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence :)
Don't want to instigate a debate. Just felt like pointing this fact out ^^

Of course, that's why all I claimed is that there's no evidence (although some definitions are inherently contradictory). But there's also no evidence the Flying Spaghetti Monster DOESN'T exist, so the fact that "absence of evidence is not evidence of absence" should not be a tether that one uses to desperately cling to the notion of God.

Pretty contradictory, IMO.
How is it contradictory? ^^

Um... It almost sounds like your assuming that those who believe in the notion of God have no logic backing up their beliefs. Let me be the first to tell you that that is not true(there might be those who blindly believe in God but the belief itself is not illogical). Also, keep in mind that one of the aspects in believing in God is faith. No one knows for sure whether God exists or not and that's where faith comes in. After all, that is what religion is all about (duh).

Like I said before, I don't want to start a debate since that is not what this thread is about (not to mention it will take way too long explaining the logic behind the belief of God). But if you are interested, there are many books on philosophical archetypes who have debated in favor of the notion of Gods existence. One example is Thomas Aquinas. You should look him up. There are many more but I don't feel like naming them all. Sorry ^^

I can't say that belief in ANY God is logically flawed (though it is true for some definitions of God), but it is flawed from the perspective of scientific evidence. You say that "faith" is one of the aspects of believing in God. "Faith" by definition is a belief based simply on traditions (e.g. a sacred text) and hopes and not on anything rational or critical. That is to say, belief in something despite logic or lack of scientific evidence. Religious faith is how people "know" things (religious or otherwise) are "true" in their hearts without critically examining it. This would suggest that faith is not something that should be looked at as a virtue or an ideal. You say "No one knows for sure whether God exists or not and that's where faith comes in." and I say that you can say the same thing about the Celestial Teapot or the Invisible Flying Unicorn in the corner of my room.

Now before you chastise me for bashing religious people, let me make the caveat that EVERYBODY, including myself, is guilty at some time or another of logical fallacy or making false judgments about evidence or any number of things like that, and it is not religion and spirituality that I take issue with, it's ignorance and lack of critical thinking, which is certainly not limited to the faithful. Go to the Brawl Boards and you'll find plenty. (/elitistjerk)

Aquinas' defintion of God (or rather his 'proof' that God exists) is that saying that "God exists" is a tautology, i.e. that the nature of God IS existence. That's perfectly fine if you want to define God that way - it's a good example of a definition of God that's not logically flawed - which is really the same as saying "God is equal to, no greater and no less than, the laws of nature" without all the anthropomorphizing and manifestations and whatnot. You're really just renaming Nature "God." Of course later on he insists that what he has called "God" also happens to be this fellow the Bible mentions, which is where everything goes awry.

Why people feel the need to roof over Nature with a God who would himself need explaining and at the same time be the explanation of nothing is beyond me.
