Really newbie question about tilts

I'm fairly new to trying to play SSBM competitively, and while I've basically mastered techniques like SHFFL, Shield Grab, and such, I seem to have a problem with a rather basic attack. I can't figure out how to up tilt - I always either end up jumping or performing up smash. What's the trick?
