This is a match between me and a friend of mine online (good connection) that was taken awhile ago, and I was wondering if anyone had some input on it.

He's a very good Ike who's used to playing my Luigi. Even though I usually beat him, there are times where he gives me a really hard time so I'm wondering what people do against sword characters. I always seem to have trouble with them.

I think my main weakness is approaching and getting back on the stage against said characters.

Some notes:

1. I usually don't whiff that many up+bs, it was just an online friendly and I got a little carried away.

2. The side B at 0:43 was supposed to be a tornado, wewps.

Wishing Apex 2012 happened again.
That Ike was really good *yeah I know you said to rate your wigi instead lol :3* That ike had everything spaced almost perfectly well. Nice jabs to grabs and such.

Okies as for your luigi. It's pretty well. It coulda been totally better if you didnt make clumsy mistakes but everyone always make one every now and then eh? Generally more SH fireball approachs and tornado approachs. But really for fighting Ike, all you have to do is fireball pressure him until he approachs and punish him for his after lag.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall eh?

Edit: learn how to sweetspot the edge with green missle and dont overuse rising tornado, use it as a last resort

I've never really tried SH fireball approaching, I'll give it a shot.

And true, I probably would have an easier time if I played defensively, but that's not really my style.

Still, I'll practice it all anyway for the next time I enter a tournament., thanks for the feedback!

I liked how badly you punished Ike for his lag, especially with B up. Nice work! I agree with hippiedude though, don't spam the tornado too much and always remember your tilts! They can reack up godly combos! (Escpecially utilt)

I've never really been punished for using the tornado, it seems to rise too fast to be punished and if they get caught in it they're sucked out. I'm aware of the chance of a character such as Ike spiking me out of it, but I usually judge that he's too far away to nail the already hard to obtain position to do it...

Edit: I just looked at the video again and saw me using it on stage and eating upair because of it. Thanks for pointing that out, never really thought about it.

Constructive criticism!

Love your game, you seem to play alot like I do. Except I think you're better than I am. Your technical skill is solid and your spacing makes sense.

What I've noticed most is that you share my largest flaw, you're too eager. It makes sense for luigi to be eager to get inside, and in a lot of cases it's your only choice. My advice would to be to reorganize your priorities. Getting close seems to be your #1, where I feel staying safe should be there instead.

Against this Ike specifically I would avise that you use your fireball more. True, it isn't very good as far as projectiles go, but at decent range, Ike cant do **** about it. You shouldn't ever really have a problem getting into fireball range, at which point, there's no reason (that I've found at least) not to spam it at Ike. Make him figure you out, instead of vice versa. The main problem with this, that I've found, is luigi's low traction. Ike has long moves that tend to do bad things to spot/roll dodging, and if you just shield, most Ike attacks will send you too far out of range to do anything useful. If I were you, I'd look to be annoying with my fireball, then try my ****edest to perfect shield his inevitable attack (Fair seems to be a favorite for an ike in that situation). If you get the timing wrong and get pushed out, spam some more =D.

Being a douche=win. =P

Just for reiteration, you're better than I am, take my advice with a grain of salt.

I do agree that I should be using the fireball more, SHing it and all that. And yeah, I used to have a TON of trouble with Ike because his attacks would send me sliding too far away to counter, so I started trying to spot dodge more instead, and that worked great.

I've been getting a few perfect shields online, but it's a lot easier to do offline. Problem is, I don't have my own recording software. ;|

I'll work on my defensive game for sure.

I've only got one thing for you.

At 2:06, bthrow+jabs or up-angled fsmash would have killed instead of upsmash.

note to all: bthrow is a decent kill at higher percents [for luigi] (w/ jabs you can kill many under 120%), i've just started working it into my game, and it helps a little bit. Try it

I've actually gotten pretty good at angled forward smashes, and it's very rare for me not to use it, I was getting my *** handed to me so hard it slipped my mind.

Kills Ike at like 85%, it's so crazy.

Back throw is pretty good too though, if it doesn't kill it sets you up for a gimp kill.

i don't know if this has been said, but fireballs to interrupt ike when he is doing laggy moves like fsmash work wonders when you follow up with a quick smash or upB. In luigi's case, his momentum makes it easy to fireball and quickly attack ike before running away again.

But yeah, with ike it never pays to be so eager.

P.S.: I find it hard to use luigi online, i need to be in real time to compensate for his traction.

Yeah, it messes up jab comboing and up+bs as well, but when you don't live near any good players, its better than playing the computer.
