I have one, and I really don't think so. It's definitely worth it for the larger screens. You'll probably regret it if you get a normal 3DS.
Ah ok, thanks. Yeah I think trying to play smash4 on the original 3ds would be hard with the smaller screen.

Right. Honestly, It kind of bothered me from the start, and once the XL came out I knew the small screen was not cutting it. I sold my original (limited edition, mind you) 3DS just to get an XL.

Everyone seems to be citing the official screenshot images from the website for how beautiful the game is, but that is not how the game is actually going to look to you.

Those are all high resolution screen-caps (likely from a computer), playing on your 3DS will get you all of those classic, traditional 3DS grill lines and pixel effects. What you're seeing in those pictures is hardly an example of what you'll be actually experiencing...

I don't think the Wii U ones will be far off. The console looks good.

I have no doubts the Wii U one will look great but this is a thread pertaining to the 3DS version...

Is the pixelation on the 3ds XL as bad as some people say it is? Like does it really affect gameplay that much?
The pixelation is noticeable but far from bad. The 3DS XL's only problems are the speakers are worse (put headphones on instead) and it's heavy enough to be uncomfortable to play when holding with one hand and a stylus (doesn't apply to Smash).

Definitely agree with the sound, it's my biggest pet peeve with an otherwise great system. The sound turned up all the way is still relatively quiet, and you probably won't be able to hear it at all if there is other noise in the room. As you said, headphones are definitely needed. Even though the sound is quiet, I would wholeheartedly reccomend the XL over the regular 3DS to anyone. The larger screens are a very big deal.

I must honestly be playing a different system from you, but my 3DS has never had me noticing the grill lines and pixels in a way that annoyed or detracted from a game's look. Pokemon looks as good to me as it ever did in pre-release official photos, so I'm not sure why this would be any different.

You must be.

Whether it bothers you or not personally is irrelevant but the game will not look like the pictures found on the website, resolution/sharpness-wise. It's not like it doesn't make sense that they'd want the most beautiful looking photos of the game available on their website

[raises hand]

I like the visable pixels anyways.
[leaves to unpopular opinions thread]
To each their own.

I don't care what the graphics are like I'm just glad to have Smash on a handheld.

I also love the fact that there is going to be a Smash Bros. game on the 3DS, so I wouldn't mind if the graphics weren't amazing. But the graphics are pretty good, and pictures online don't represent how the game would be in person (Kid Icarus looks much better in person than screen shots online) so I think the graphics will be great!

I give it three, I say three Gamecubes duct-taped together out of one Wii!

I mean 8/10. Not bad, about as good as Brawl's.

Don't forget the worse screens/warmer colouring, though this happened to regular 3DS' too at an unknown point, I think around the very beginning of 2012.

Didn't know about the speakers.

I think the graphics are really nice but the biggest improvement it needs would be in screen resolution. It's too pixelated right now for me. I would say it looks better then brawl aesthetically wise though.

Sure it may not look as sharp as the original 3ds graphics but it's worth it becuase you have a bigger screen to play on. And that will really help with super smash bros 3ds. Which is just barely playable but still awesome. Definitely not knocking the 3ds version. That's the one I'm getting. But if anything the 3ds xl enhances the experience not decreases it. And I have seen them both at the same time in real life. The 3ds xl is worth it if your not a perfectionist. No offense to anyone. Can't wait for this game! :)

Solid graphics, however seeing some recent images are making me think it won't look as good. Extremely pixelated in some places :/

But the pics and videos never do games justice you have to see it in real life to really see how good it is.

I think you have to remember the screens aren't going to be that close to your face when you're actually playing. At least, that's how I play. About a foot away from my face.

I'm going to have to go with as good as Wii graphics for this. It isn't as good, but it's above the above average option, if that makes sense.

It's almost comic book like which is pretty unique. I like it.

A lot more appealing than Brawls visuals. Love how it looks like a comic book. This will look really good on an OG 3DS screen.

I honestly think it looks better than Brawl, especially when they showed Brawl in the direct, 3ds easily looked better IMO.

I don't think it should be compared to the console version. With that being said, the graphics are great, especially for a handheld. Vivid bright colors, nothing is noticeably rigid, etc.I know I just said it shouldn't be compared to the console version, but I have confused the two at times, and I mean that in a good way.

Looks better than Brawl simply because of the artstyle making everything pop better, looks really good in person.

I love the 3DS graphics honestly, especially in the new Smash game, the cell shaded style is very likable in my opinion

Same man. The cel-shaded style is nice. Screenshots and videos don't do justice, I'm pretty sure it'll look much better when playing the game.

10/10. Knowing the hardware restrictions of the 3DS, I am amazed at how good the game looks.

They are fine for the 3DS's standards... Just as long as those lines are turned off. lol

it's actually the reason it took me so long to get the LL.
but then i ended up getting one anyway because of the matte texture and better circle pad and stuff (also my 3DS was american so i couldn't play japanese games on it and had to get another 3DS anyway).

didn't regret it at all.
the resolution is definitely lower, but i only really notice it if i've JUST played my regular 3DS. tbh though, i still prefer the appearance to the regular 3DS despite the resolution simply because it's "less crowded" feeling. it's heavier, but it's also more comfortable -- the original 3DS can be held in one hand longer but the squared edges make it so it's still not comfortable to do so.

Once I kill the Borderlands borders that I despise so much, I'm sure the 3DS's graphics will be perfectly acceptable for a Smash Bros game. Graphics only enhance the experience, as long as the basic functionality is there.

I gave it a 7 just by the descriptor words, but really, the only 3DS game I think looks better is Fire Emblem Awakening, because until further evidence, I consider that the best 3DS game in all categories.

I like the look of it. Admittedly I'm a weird one in that I don't care as heavily about graphic quality in fighting games so long as you can see what you're doing and such, and to do that you don't need 1080p ultra HD high definition amazing super powered engine graphics. :joyful:

I gave it an 8 though. Fire Emblem Awakening has the best graphics and 3D I've seen in any title so far, but maybe brawl will fill that 2nd spot for me.

Playing on my girlfriends XL a lot lately, I realize that I definitely will prefer the game on the original model. Any visibility issues I worried about are all but silenced now so honestly my biggest issue would be sound quality and the pixelation, which are both better on the original model imo.
