Credit to Sensai, who posted this information on the Wii thread.

This is in regards to Super Mario Strikers coming out for the Wii, an announcement has been made concerning the online.

Nintendo has announced players can battle it out on the pitch over the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Service in two different online modes. There's Ranked, where you can climb up the leaderboards and Unranked, for quick play against pals.
http://wii.ign.com/articles/777/777886p1.html

Granted, Sakurai said previously that leaderboards and rankings were not planned (or did he say he wasn't going to do them period? Forgive me for not checking.)

But at least this means Nintendo is not totally against the concept.

Interesting, we might see ranked matches yet, who knows, at e3 (or erm whats it called now?) it might be revealed that smash brothers will be playable with eather a gamecube controller, classic or even the wiimote if so desired.

Its not like online ranking is going to mean anything anyway. All I care about is if the online thing works, but Im pretty sure face to face smash will still define who is and isn't the best.

I wish melee was online, with no lag. That would be so sweeeeeeet. I would probably just ignore brawl if I had that...

Visiting from above.
I don't think Sakurai has made many concrete, unambiguous answers to anything. The only thing I can think of was the "Third party characters must have appeared on Nintendo consoles" comment. I believe his wording was closer to "it's not planned."

I find it doubtful that there will be any rankings / leaderboards for Brawl...

...and if there are, Nintendo's a bunch of ****ing idiots (for reasons already discussed).

if you think about it tho, all the online DS games have leaderboards, scoreboards and whatnot. also, there are things like gamebattles on mlg that have nothing to do with something in the game itself but still provide competiton and rank. somehow someway there will be a way to rank whether it comes with the game or not. MLG is going to be down with smash most likely

Yeah but brawl will be all new and shiney and people will want to watch it, so I could see MLG picking it up for a bit, then dropping it like they did to melee... thats my theory.

I really hope there aren't leaderboards or a ranking system for brawl. Online smash is no thanks for serious matches IMO. For fun though itll be wild.

I agree, online is good for fun only. Also, I think online would be the perfect way to get ready for a tournament, as you could practice a ton. Play some online, and then go to a tournament. [of course, I cannot go to tournaments, but I can dream]

Another good use for online, let's say some idiot tries to convince everyone that he "rocks", then a skilled player could go and put him in his place. Hmm, if you can record online matches to an SD card, you can then show that idiots loss to everyone, and he'll have been OWNED!

Or, let's say you are a good smasher in the US [really good], and there's a figher in Japan of your level and you're crazy to duke it out. If you can't afford plane tickets, you can fight online, and not have to wait the plane ride. You could fight with someone far away without having to travel [in person would be better though].

However, I am not too crazy with leaderboards, what I want is a good solid customizable online, with my brother able to join me in a 2v2 [I think if he had more people to play he would be motivated to get better]. I want to be able to turn off items and turn on teamattack, and to be able to chat, at least by Wii onscreen keyboard, inbetween matches.

Also, with leaderboards, that means you'll HAVE to fight random battles for points, which is something I'm not particularly fond of. SO many beginners... [I'm a beginner myself, but I'm getting better in techs, and I found out about the techs so late in Melee's life. In Brawl I want to have a head start]. I think having to fight 100+ scrubs/newbs [not same] would make Dylan a very unhappy person.

I think 1-2 frames wouldn't screw it up THAT much [except for very precise moves],, although it will still be something. 3+ on the other hand...

There should be online, but it shouldn't be overly-focused on. I love doing a real match with people I can see beside me and can mock where they can hear me.

I second that.

Also, I found a downside to online. If Ken decided to try his hand in Brawl and became awesome in a new game as well, I do not think he will like having 800,000+ people PMing, Aiming, and e-mailing him every second. His PM box would fill like no tomorrow, in which case he'll have to block everyone but buddies, and face people who ask him why his message didn't get through in the forums. In which case he'll wonder why he ever decided to get good in Brawl at all.

*Whoops* And if there WERE rankings, we'd be experiencing the largest skill gap that online gaming has ever known. People new to Smash wouldn't find much enjoyment there, while the truly skilled would have the time of their lives. It'd be best if there were options to play against people your own skill level like in the DS games so the majority of the population wouldn't have to cry themselves to sleep. And it seems like Charged will be broader than that...

what are you talking about...if they have it ranked..then you would just be playing people around your rank level...i.e.....noobs willplay other noobs...and pros will play other pros....i still can'y believe you guys are so against ranked online play...i played ranked online halo matches..and i was sucked in..i was ables to play for hours on end..everyday....overnight...no sleep...miniaml food breaks...its awesome...yeah u go into a fight and u find that random cheater..so what...just leave...and get into a new match..the number of flawless games highly outweighs the number of hacked games...u guys make ranked games sound soooo bad when it really isnt..im really hoping for a ranked inline mode so i have a goal to achieve..and just to see where u generslly stand against others...peace

As much as all those elipses really turn me away from your post, I agree with Hiroshi. I don't reallly think there will be that many hackers and cheaters. With lag, your skill level won't neccesarily be measured accurately anyways. Online ranks and leaderboards simply encourage you to do better, and allows you to fight people like you.

The only thing im worried about is laggy online. FC's suck too, but I guess I'll have to livbe with it. But I can't live with massive lag all the time

There WILL be gay hackers that cheat online so I would rather not have rankings.
That's like saying there WILL be terrorists so there shouldn't be anymore skyscapers, train stations, etc.

I don't really care about hackers, as long as we can ignore them [stop them from matching up with you] they won't be a problem.

And if online is supposed to be fun why stick pros with noobs who can't even get back to the stage? I hate fighting newbs it's so boring ranking would separate the wheat from the shaft.

You're clearly not from America. I can tell, as you casually mentioned terrorism without screaming about how Osama's evil and Saddam was the devil. I salute you.

So, this is the first thread I've ever inspired...that's cool.

And I'm not sure why people are against ranking and leaderboards. What's it cost you? If you don't wanna play in the ranked mode, play in the other one.

I think online is great practice, but the ranking system should be in. I probably won't use it much, just looking at my Halo experience with it. For example, hackers are all over ranked games, so I mainly play unranked.

I really would be low ranked because I would play more relaxed games (unranked), but if you are getting ready for a hard matchup or tourney. I look at Halo 2 and most everything is ranked. IMO for every ranked match they have (ex: team snipers quick match in Halo 2), they need just as much, if not more in unranked.

I honestly want ranked, don't get me wrong, it is just I look at the most famous online console game, Halo 2 and there is only a few unranked online modes. I want to be able to choose more and better unranked games so I can play some more layed back games.

The lag isn't what bugs me about ranked matches, it would be the hackers. Cmon there will be tons of noobs who have to cheat to win, just like any online game. I don't know, I think online ranking system and leader board would be awsome, just as long as hackers aren't that big of a factor as other online games I'll be fine with all this.

I doubt that online will become a source of competitive play unless they slow it down to the point where a couple of frames don't matter much or create "inference" system similar to halo's. However it will undoubtedly be fun to practice in for a couple of hours at a time and will hopefully expand the amount of players, resulting in more tourneys and competitive play outside of the online scheme.

As long as Friends can set up their own matches like in Metroid Prime Hunters I'd be happy, but I'd really like to see my own stats even if no one else can.
