Hey, so i consider myself competent at PM, but nowhere near tournament level. I dont have anyseriously skilled people to play against so when i play its usually 1v1s against level 9 CPUs. I was just wondering how difficult a level 9 is considered relative to tournament players or just good PM in general. If i can beat a level 9 falco with my ivysaur 19 times out of 20, am i decent at the game? Or am i still mediocre? Thanks in advance.

You're probably mediocre at best. CPU's don't really provide as much of a challenge as a good smash player does, seeing as CPU's will most likely approach you the same way every time and never DI correctly to survive, plus they're extremely easy to gimp/edge-hog. Tournament play is on a whole different plane from pitting yourself against a level 9 CPU.

You're in the same boat as many of us, including myself. Recreational mediocre. You care enough about the game to explore the depth of its mechanics and can play for sport with your friends, but lack the drive, means, or both to attend tournaments and compete at a higher level.

I have noticed that you can now only grab the stage to pull yourself up if you are facing the direction of the stage corner, cpus don't know this, so I think this constitutes a major portion of the problem...

Please PM this to KingClubber, the person who has done all of the work on the AI since 2.5 and has innovated AI ridiculously since he joined the staff.
Well I do know they have been made better by doing things such as wavedashing, combos, and stuff but I doubt the AI can be improve to come close to matching tournament players.

I guess I should say the AI is bad if you want to get good for tournament play. I do want the AI to be improve but its going to take a lot of work to stop AI from acting the way they do like constantly air dodging and SDing.

If you are beating the CPU with predictable gimmicks and cheap tricks, then you are average. Human players almost never fall for that kinda stuff. If you are legit beating them, with technique and skill, then you have a good shot at being tournament level. I've never participated in a tournament but I have been to one, and the people were not much better than I was back then, so unless your going to a tourny with like m2k in it or something then you should have a decent shot. You learn a lot of things playing CPUs such as chain grabbing, sweet spots, combos, tech skill, and hit boxes. In all honesty the only thing they really lack is a challenge, but when facing them you can learn a lot about your character.

-10,000 <- Melee's Ai. Honestly, I felt I didn't improve at all when I played against Melee bots. they were beyond terrible. You can actually improve a great many skills against PM bots, like Paradoxium said.
