It is probably going to be banned, because if I am not mistaken, it randomly selects from these things:

Characters (obv)
Custom Moves that have been unlocked in that specific game/console.
Custom Equipment that have been unlocked in that specific game/console.

Unless I am mistaken, it doesn't even select through the sets you made. And the only true way for it to function decently is to manually remove all of the equipment on that game/console, and to own every single custom move on that game/console. Something which major tournaments probably won't have time for.

So yeah. Most likely banned.

I can't see a TO actually allowing this, whether it's officially in the rules or not. So, no, I don't think you'll be able to abuse random in a tournament to get easy wins.

My Wii U has all customs unlocked, and all equipment sold. While we don't use Random in tournament for the obvious reasons, this does allow for some seriously hype Random only money matches.

Also, I believe you can select a random character with no customs or equipment by turning Customizations off, picking Random, and then turning Customizations back on.

What if you want a character with random custom moves?
Then you have to sell off all equipment on the system, which may not be desirable if you plan to use it for single player purposes. I certainly wouldn't expect people who donate their setups for locals to muck about with their own equipment collection.

I also heard that even if you have no equipment the game will still just make some up for Random to use, but I haven't seen it verified anywhere.

Then, as mentioned before, you need to unlock all custom specials on your system, and then sell all of the equipment you own.

@ ParanoidDrone ParanoidDrone I can confirm that picking Random while the system has no equipment available will NOT make up some equipment on the spot for the character. You'll just get random customs only.

My ruleset allows players to select Random by turning customs OFF, then selecting random, then turning customs back on.

That sets all customs to 1111, which is against what OP is trying to do I think.
Why? The other player can still use customs, and it's much better to know what you're getting as soon as you see your character, rather than to have to use your moves to know what they are.

If ALL equipment is cleared from the console, you can random without penalty, and it will assign the usual random character and color, as well as four random custom moves from those unlocked. Issue being, if you only have them available as a 3DS transfer set, your options will be severely limited.

This bit about selecting Random is also true, at least last I checked (which was on the 3DS version demo). Random is chosen on click, not on load (you can actually find out someone's random by cycling through every character on every color and finding out who's missing. It was only feasible on the demo, though, due to five characters).

...Sorry, I guess? I read as far down as five or six people that didn't know about this. I'm not trying to steal your thunder or whatever.
Yeah, that was a bit harsh... But the way you phrased it made it sound like an alternative to what was most recently posted.

Using the in-game random function to select a character in a customs tournament should definitely not be allowed. If anyone truly cares about using random characters in customs tournaments I could just write an android app that selects a random character and moveset (from the list) automatically. I guess that would take about 10 minutes to make...

It's not practical to ensure equipment is cleared from every console at a tournament. Turning customs off, selecting random, and turning them back on is a good solution. A better solution is just not picking random in tournament (it's a seriously bad idea!), but I don't see a fairness problem with the 1111 random characters if some player for some odd reason wants to use it. It's a nifty trick!

I agree,

Though, who would EVER do this...?
