Raising My Pokemon

While I have done a little bit of research on EV's and etc., and types of pokemon--"tanks", "sweepers", etc. (I learned the terms off of Serebii.net), I'm just not sure what categories my pokemon fit into, or what categories they would benefit from fitting into.

I do not know if I should train my umm, for example say Voltorb, to become a sweeper or a tank. I'm unsure what stats to focus on increasing, if I go by the nature it comes with or do I go and breed until I get the right nature???

--I have just re-started my Pokemon Pearl game and am currently just getting to the Valley Windworks so I'm not that "able" to do a whole lot.

But I'm also training "fresh" pokemon.

I'm training a Zubat; what category would Golbat (and perhaps Crobat later on) be placed? Sweeper? Tank? Other?
Please help!

I'm unsure if there's a better place to post this, so I've posted it here.

I'll try to make this really simple :bee:

I'm assuming you are starting with a Level 1 Zubat.

Your Zubat can have "2" roles in a team:

Physical Sweeper - Due to Crobat's high speed, you can attack with a variety of damaging moves to whittle the opponent's health FAST.

Annoyer- Since Crobat has access to moves like "Confuse Ray", "Toxic", and "Protect", you can use these moves in order to disorient the opponent.

Let's just say that you decided you wanted your Crobat to be a Physical Sweeper.

The next step would be to get a good nature for your baby Zubat. Any nature that increases Attack or Speed, and decreases something useless or near useless, like Special Attack, is good for a Physical Sweeper.

So, you've got your baby Zubat. Now you want to start trainin'!

http://serebii.net/pokedex-dp/

Use that site in order to determine which Wild Pokemon give Attack and Speed EV's.

Attack EV's can be gained by battling Machop.

Speed EV's can be gained by battling Buizel, Pachirisu, or other Zubat.

So, you have 510 EV's to start with.

You can only invest 255 EV's into each stat, so by battling 255 Buizel, you max out your Speed EV!

If you max out your Speed and Attack EVs, you will have a good Crobat Physical Sweeper!

Obviously there is more to EV training, but this is the bare bones guide for beginners. I hope I helped.

Arg. I have a cruddy nature for Zubat, it being a Bold nature >.>
So in order to get the best outta a Zubat, It'd be wise to get a better nature, I presume?

The Bold nature increases Defense and lowers Attack; Would this possibly be good for an Annoyer? Seeing as it keeps them on the field longer or something..?

(As you can see I'm VERY new at this lol but thanks for the help)

Just get an AR and hack pokemon, play the game as you wish, but hack your competitive ones, that what I do. Just make sure you make them hacks that can't be tracked unless you go to source code.

The reason? It makes no room for error, and it saves you hours upon hours.

It could be! Good thinking!

So, if you want your Zubat to be an Annoyer, you should have a moveset such as :

-Protect

-Cross Poison/Confuse Ray

-Toxic

-Mean Look

When the opponent comes in, MEAN LOOK them to prevent escape. Then, use TOXIC on them to poison them. Use CONFUSE RAY to confuse them or alternate using PROTECT and CROSS POISON in order to deal alot of damage!

So, annoyers typically need to have bulky defenses.

You can gain Defense EV's by battling Geodude and Onix.

You can gain Special Defense EV's by battling Tentacool/Tentacruel.

* HELPFUL BREEDING HINT *

Find a Ditto with a nature that you like (Adamant for Physical Sweepers, Modest for Special Sweepers, etc.) and catch it.
Give it an everstone and breed it with the Pokemon that you want a baby of.

Adamant Ditto (holding Everstone) + Any-Nature Zubat/Golbat/Crobat = 50% Chance of Adamant Zubat.

A Ditto (or father) holding an everstone has a 50% chance of passing on it's nature to the baby Pokemon. VERY helpful.

Dunno why people are so adamant on not hacking Pokemon, it helps so much and saves tons of times, and you can test new movesets easy, instead of waiting hours of raising.

You could also use Crobat as a Taunter, its a really fast pokemon, and it works well to taunt.

My friend has a Brave I think? Nature.

I had one, and I used it to get the pokemon team I wanted to play through the game for. But then it started messing up and the codes wouldn't work >.> Well some of them anyways.

I'm playing through the game as I train these pokemon as well, so I don't have access to all areas yet, but should soon enough haha.

Hmm well I have been battling a bit of Geodude lately so that's a plus.

My Zubat is currently at level 15, and has DEF. of 17 and SP. DEF. of 19--is that good or... cruddy?

Zubat is, of course, got a (I presume) good speed of 26 (good relative to their level).

I'm not against cheats to get the job done faster, as long as there's no modifying of stats to create an insanely unbeatable pokemon;

Thankyou all for the help!

Stamping your library books.
Remember, Crobat has a very good special movepool, and Nasty Plot makes his SpAtk pretty good. With a nuetral SpAtk nature and less-than-perfect IVs, his SpAtk still reaches over 400 with a single NP.

Crobat @ Life Orb
Modest
252 SpAtk/252 Spd/6 Hp
-Nasty Plot
-Sludge Bomb
-Shadow Ball
-Heat Wave/Air Slash/HP Electric/Taunt

Seeing as how you won't be able to get Heat Wave right now (Platinum), You might want to go for Air Slash (Decent Hidden Power is hard to get). This set gets walled be Steels without HW, but eh. Taunt gets Skarm for a while.

My Zubat has just evolved into a Golbat (w00tw00t), and its stats are as follows:

HP/66
Atk/38
Def/40
Sp. Atk/37
Sp. Def/41
Speed/52

Should I continue working on it's Defense or try and increase its Special Attack?

My Golbat has a Bold nature, and is at level 22.

--I'm also working on a Gyrados. I'm not sure if I should start training a new Magicarp or if I can make this Gyrados work.

My Gyrados has an Adamant nature (wich I think is good for it??) at level 21 with the following stats:

HP/73
Atk/68
Def/42
Sp. Atk/30
Sp. Def/53
Speed/43

edit: Also, and I feel dumb asking this, but which types are affected by the Atk stat and which are affected by the Sp. Atk stat?

Oooh. I had gotten confused off of something from Serebii.net then.

I, for some reason, was lead to believe that certain move types were for the attack stat and others for sp. attack.

As in TYPES, not.. moves themselves. >.> Oops hehe.
