I'm not sure, but I wouldn't think so. Why would Sakurai be announcing secret characters pre-release? I think this may be way we haven't seen Lucario, Bowser Jr, or Ridley yet. Maybe they're unlockable, who knows.

I think some were known before release in Melee.

And howw1313, how the f**** is anyone supposed to know?
People have terrible memories or were too young at the time or something...

The only characters known before Melee's release were the starters. All of the unlockables were unknown.

@ OP:
All we can do as for now is speculate, nothing official has been announced yet.
Sakurai has stated he find it "fitting" for 3rd party characters to be unlockable.

I personally think DeDeDe has a high chance of being unlockable since I'd find it odd to have all 3 Kirby reps be starters. (especially when a character such as Luigi is highly likely (emphasis on likely before anyone flames me, I'm not implying that I know this) to be unlockable again) Of course, there may always be a 4th Kirby rep but as much as I love the Kirby franchise, I'm realistic and reeeeeaaaaaally doubt this.

I think Snake is a secret character as well.
As for Lucas and Sonic... I have no clue... But let's just say I wouldn't be surprised if they were hidden. (Though from a business standpoint, I would think it best for Sonic to be a starter, then again, might be just me)

EDIT: wow there howw1313, after seeing that kind of reaction I regret having taken the time reply so kindly to your question...

USE TEH GRAMMARZ

And all we know for sure is Sonic and Snake
That's pretty much it. Here's basically the main pieces of evidence regarding everyone else being starters:

Wario-plays an early role in the SSE and appears on the offical game box
Pit-same as the above and appears on the offical game box
Diddy Kong-same as the above
Pokemon Trainer-appears on the offical game box
Metaknight-plays an early role in the SSE and appears on the offical game box
Lucas-pretty much proven to be Ness's replacement
King Dedede-slight evidence in the Classic update that shows him as an ally in one of the early matches
Ike-is basically a semi-clone of Marth and highly suggests that Marth will be unlockable thus making Ike the main FE rep

Also, the fact that Diddy, Pit, Metaknight, and Ike were playable in the demo also suggests that they are playable from the get-go.

We can't really look at the demo, though. After all, Sonic was playable in it, and it's likely that he'll be unlockable; meanwhile, Kirby, Zelda, and the Ice Climbers were MIA.

Except the thing is that Sakurai already explained the situation regarding third party characters and all the characters you listed were starters in Melee so logically...

um no im new here and the least i expect is a little respect so sry for the problem...:dizzy:
Sorry, you gotta earn respect, and the wrong way to start on that path is to freak out over a little criticsm. Anyway, you'll get used to how it all works.

On-topic: Sorry, no one knows for sure who's secret or who's not yet. The end.

Anyone who was in the trailer, demo or on the cover is probably playable from the start, except third-party characters. Any of the veterans shown so far are probably playable from the start as well. That leaves Lucas and King Dedede. I'd say Lucas is playable from the start, while King Dedede is unlockable. So in conclusion, I think Snake, Sonic and King Dedede are the only hidden characters shown so far.

King Dedede-slight evidence in the Classic update that shows him as an ally in one of the early matches
Um, him being in a screenshot after he was released doesn't make him a starter - every character has been seen in several screenshots in updates immediately after theirs. Sakurai was pretty clear about how classic mode worked, giving you a random Kirby foe at stage 3, and he is a Kirby foe, hence giving him a reason to be shown there. Theres no reason his being in that update means anything about his unlockable or starter status.

I take it you haven't paid much attention to the info we garnered on Ike from E for All, because hes nothing of the sort. They share exactly three moves, one of which is a fairly generic special (counter) and the other two of which are equally generic standard moves (fair and f-tilt are vertical slashes on both), and are opposites in terms of play style (Ike being heavier, slower, and stronger than Bowser vs Marth being light, fast, and combo-reliant). They're not even close to each other, much less semi-clones.

Now, I do agree hes likely to be a starter, mostly because of how early he was announced and the fact that hes the most popular international Lord, but theres also the fair chance Marth will join him as a starter. And of course I wanted to enlighten you on that erroneous assumption about the two.

Yes, but the fact that we've seen so much that contradicts the idea that the demo is a reliable indicator as to who will be a starter shows that we can't really use that.

Also, what Zevox said about Marth possibly becoming a starter is absolutely true - he's the face of Fire Emblem, so giving him a starting position would make sense if Ike is going to be a starter (which he most likely will).

But that wasn't just a regular VS match, it was in classic mode. Mario was the playable character and Kirby and King Dedede were your allies againist Meta Knight thus suggesting for certain stages, the partner match ups aren't completely random and rather based on the franchise of the stage.

And I take it you don't know the meaning of the word "semi-clone." The word semi literally means half and from what I've seen of the E for All gameplay footage, Ike fights in a very similar manner to Marth. Also, if you want a clearer definition of what a semi-clone is, compare Mario and Luigi: different stats and modified similar attacks.

Now, I do agree hes likely to be a starter, mostly because of how early he was announced and the fact that hes the most popular international Lord, but theres also the fair chance Marth will join him as a starter. And of course I wanted to enlighten you on that erroneous assumption about the two.

The irony of this is that when I called Ike a semi-clone, I was going off of observations from watching the various match videos that came in from E for All, you got on me for that because I didn't offer an indepth explanation and then in this paragraph, you say that Marth has a fair chance of being a starter and offer no explanation as to why...Also, why is it that everytime we meet (which isn't very often I might add) you always end up talking down to me as if I'm either A) blind or B) borderline r*tarded?
