hello, i usually just play melee seriosuly, but i do enjoy smash 64 occasionally.
a kid from school aparently plays this game more seriously with his group of friends (mine play melee) and ive challenged him to this game. hes probably noob, just better than his friends (he says he doesnt use tilts).
but what are the first things i should learn to get good at this game?
whats some easy things i need to learn?
how does it differ from melee?
thanks

It differs from melee greatly.
Longer hitstun(more combos), faster, etc etc.
i suggest looking at the SMASH 64 INDEX thread.
start off with pika yes.

It's much less demanding in terms of tech skill... Believe me I beat all the smashers I know (in person) on 64. But when it comes to melee I hold on for dear life. This can also be seen in coming back from not playing for awhile. When I pick 64 back up, sure I suck compared to what I can be, but I can pick up a lot of things quickly. No melee practice for me = play ****ty until I get my techs down.

But don't let that fool you. 64 can have just as steep of a learning curve... (arguably anything can, anyone can push anything as far as they can... if that makes sense)

Anyway chances are he's a total noob, just focus on movement and knowing all the physics involved. Even noobs can beat the "better" player. He has a set way to play. Just don't think about how much better your skill might be and focus on beating his strategy.

I've said too much of the same thing by now I think... RAWR

thread hijack: Anyone excited for diablo 3? ...better take this to the social...

Screw Pikachu if you're relatively new and learning use Kirby for insta-win against other newbs. First thing you need to learn is utilt. That's about it really.

Later on when you are not rushed for time you should start by learning the character's move sets and practice against people who are a bit better than you so you can learn from them and get better.

Jake is definitely dropping Yoshi
Some easy noob tactics / combos for some characters:

Luigi: down-air to up-b. It's an easy combo that can kill at mid-high percents.

Falcon: up-smashes to up-airs to up-b. Very basic combo. May be tricky for beginners, but once you learn how to do it, it's actually very effective.

Yoshi: up-tilt to down-air chain ending in up-smash. Very easy combo to do that can kill people from 0%. However, it only works on medium to heavy weights.

Kirby: up-tilt chain. It combos into itself until killing percents, and has rediculous priority.

Pikachu: up-tilt chain to up-smash to thunder. Fairly simple combo that can kill people if done properly.

Jigglypuff: down-air to rest (down-b). Easy combo that kills at rediculously low percents. You also do not need to l-cancel the down-air, so if your techskill is not the greatest, you can still pull off this combo fairly easily.

thanks for the help guys. i can l cancel perfectly and stuff so i should be able to clean him up. just realised in this game compared to melee, if you l cancel your aerial on their shield, keeping in mind the no lag on l cancel and the increased hitstun on shield it actually gives you the advantage on the next attack (or grab). is this correct/significant?

Yes. If you attack on shield you will have a guaranteed grab with most attacks, and some like ness/yoshi aerials and kirby utilts can turn it into a shield break.

One other thing is that grabs are really good, so grab a lot (unless you're using kirby, in which case you should utilt or fsmash instead).

Yeah if you're just playing this one guy, kirby it up, but if you want to actually get good, pick a different character and start playing other people a lot and learning harder combos.

If you've got even a little bit of time to practice, falcon combos are easy and effective. Fthrow-Usmash-Usmash-Uair and Usmash-Usmash-Usmash uair uair... UpB are not that hard to learn.

Besides all that has been said before, grab.
Grabs are overpowered against people who are not able to short hop and/or cancel their aerials yet.
Grab often, especially whenever you feel in trouble. You'll crush them.

This is obviously didactical: it will push them to spamgrab in order to stand a chance against you ^^
At this point you can introduce them to sh/lag-cancel to counter them and eventually have decent matches
