Questionnnn, sorta Marth related

Does anybody sometimes lose control of their thumb while trying to low jump with Marth continuously? Wish there was a better way to explain... While pressing the x button quickly for the low jump, my thumb muscle, which spans from the tip of the thumb through the forearm, sometimes feels tightened too much, or cramped, and as a result my thumb either rises away from the x button(never hitting x), or goes down too hard and makes a full jump.

Has anybody had this problem and could shed some light on it? As much as I'd love to say this post is a joke, I can't -.-;. I play maybe 2-3 hours a day now (In total, not consecutively) due to the San Bernardino tournament in Sept. I've been trying to become consistent with all the techniques as fast as possible; mainly pivoting, low jumping, fast falling, dash-canceling, and l-canceling.

Seeing as how this is my first post too: Hi!

Welcome to smash boards!!! The only thing I can think of is that if you got comfortable enough with short hopping then your thumb should relax, but it sounds like you are pretty comfortable... You could try using the y button instead of x, or just try and relax your thumb as much as possible.

I think what your problem is is actually psychological. You're trying to restrain yourself from pushing the jump button too hard and getting a full jump.

Fortunately, it doesn't work that way. It's the duration of which the button is pressed that matters. Hope that helps.

Welcome to smashboards! And the only thing we can really say is practice. Practice short hopping, SHFFling, (anything to do with short hopping basically), for about 10 mins, then go into a match for a while. In 20 mins time, do the 10 mins of training again. It does work xD.

Ok, first off if you have a tourney in september, the advanced technique that's gonna help you most is Shffling, followed by L cancelling. Dude, don't worry about pivoting. Not yet at least, and dash cancelling is easy. Work on Jump cancelling your grabs too. (Pressing jump right before you dash grab)

ya what jesiah said..i was like..trying pivots when he still doesn't have 100% sh accuracy..dis guy is nuts.

But ya, two things, i agree that it's probably psychological for you..the other possibility is that it's from playing too much for long periods of time..if it's the latter, then eventually your thumb will become used to it hopefully..but the trick is to learn to relax. a tense thumb actually moves slower, so you need to will yourself to not tense up..people just have a natural tendency in sports and stuff to think i need to contract my muscles a little because i'm about to contract them a lot. I don't know about you, but sometimes i catch myself doing the same thing when i am about to race in real life...you just have to find the will to control yourself and focus on the right mindset rather than preemptively activating your muscles.

It's not marth related, seems that'd be a problem with alls characters. it makes sense if it's a muscle in your arm, if you're pressing your buttons with an odd part of the thumb, it will cause your muscle to strain, note if you don't think about how hard you're pressing it rather, think about the duration, it'll be better for you. If you just tap it it'll go smoothly and easy.

Where do you live by and by, I love marth dittos

Once my thumb exploded and flew away from me while trying to shorthop, does that count?
But back on topic.. :o
You should really try to focus on mastering wavedashing, shorthopping, and l-cancelling. Fast falling and dash-cancelling should only take you 30 seconds to master respectively.

That happens to me too. I don't know how to stop it but if it happens I just try to make the best of the situation. My first post too. Hi!
