hi, i'm a melee player that occasionally plays smash 64. i kind of want to play online with people but the only populated server that plays smash 64 is the one in new york and i can't even connect to that. it says my ping is too high. i was wondering if there's a way i can get a server going in california? do i have to pay or something? also, what's a good N64 adapter for the PC.

you can always play p2p with west coasters.
you will probably even get 3-4 frames with east coasters.

Unless you have depressingly slow internet, I don't believe your ping is too high for galaxy. You live in San Diego. I live twice the distance away in Australia, with very mediocre internet, and have a ping just under the cap. Close AV programs, downloading programs/managers, and anything that might be eating up your bandwidth (ie. browsers or moviemakers uploading to youtube, etc).

You can host a server on any PC, but it won't have the quality of a bought server.

yeah, maybe. i think it's cause i'm using wireless internet.

p2p is the answer
I think so too. There's not many west coasters I think and I can't host p2p either. I'd much rather play on console but this will do I suppose.

So does anyone know of a good N64 adapter?

You should have no problem connecting to galaxy if your connection is ok from California, or pretty much most places in the world. My guess is that something else is using your bandwidth. Being on wireless internet should only increase your ping by a few milliseconds as the only increase of delay should come from the connection to the router from your pc.

However from that far you are not likely to get low frame delay if you play on the server. Your best bet is to p2p - there are a good bunch of west coasters and even with east coast players it would be playable assuming the connection is good.

And to answer your question about the adapter, the best one around now is the Mayflash Dual N64 adapter. You can get it on something like ebay and also from online stores.

If I recall correctly there have been some west coast servers but they have not been too popular. If you wanted to start a reliable server then you would have to pay for hosting.

Server ping should be maximum like 90 or lower, and for higher pings you should use certain characters that work better in higher delay, like... Kirby, Mario or DK for example.

i dont really "host" tournies per se. i just try to get tournament organizers to include smash 64 as an event at their tournies lol. but, i hear that there might be some tournies coming up down in santa barbara starting pretty soon. just keep checking the competitive sub-forum for any that may come up.

come to the magical land of norcal
norcals where its at! lol jk socal is chill too
