Input your DI on the frame that you are hit.

It helps if you move either stick during the hit sound.
Like if you notice, the slash sounds for marth from tipper to handle hit are different lengths. The tipper sound lasts longer, meaning if you input the DI during said sound.....Ta da!
Also notice the difference w/ Captain Falcon's knee. flubbed vs sweet.
And the zap sound w/ samus's fully charged cannon, I think that's the attack that gives you the longest window for smash di

also, don't forget to DI 90 degrees from the angle of your trajectory, in a northward fashion.
