Punishing Smash Attacks on Light Weights

I've noticed when people make their first post in these boards they get flamed, so flame away, because I've never posted here.

I looked in the Sonic forums and I couldn't find anything about this in particular, so I figured I should make a post about it.

My friends like to play light weight characters (Pit, Lucas, Kirby, Pikachu) and they absolutely wh0re their smash attacks. They are SO predictable, but it doesn't do me any good unless I'm on the defensive (which generally doesn't seem like a good strategy as Sonic). They will dash-a me, then follow with a fsmash or usmash. That's their entire strategy. They do very little dodging, shielding, aerials, or throwing. When I'm on the offensive though, I can't always predict a smash attack and they are usually clipping me with some every few hits I get on them (I do back off every once in a while when necessary, so it's not a matter of me blinding charging them and then wondering how to stop getting creamed). I do dodge offensively and shield when I can and generally they'll whiff their smashes. But the problem is I can't get them on their ***** after I dodge a hit, because as soon as I'm out of a dodge another is flying my way.

When I'm another character I can just easily dodge their moves and counter them with a combo or smash. I've played Sonic the most by far since I got Brawl, but he's the character I lose most often with. I pick up someone like Mario or Rob and I dominate them with ease.

What moves do I use to punish dash attacking and smash spamming? Or, any strategies I should be implementing?

Oh also on a side note, when I play my friends who are good at Brawl, I do much, much better against them with Sonic.

I'm just your problem~
You obviously punish dash attacks with shield grabbing and smashes with an aerial out of the shield. You can try punish with you own smash, just make sure you turn around when you do, since more likely than not, they'll try and roll around you and set up another smash.

Light characters will be more susceptible to shield grabbing (as the above stated). Also, when they do things like that, try to use DI to your advantage, and Up B to quickly get out of tricky situations and punish with short aerials. Theres a specific thread on Pit on Sonic boards, he's a tricky one along with MK.

Sonic is all about the love - casual appeal, and potential for competitive play for the hardcore gamers among us, with advanced techniques and basic combos alike.

Basically, Sonic has something for everyone. (even distance specialists .... he has the spring jump for a reason!)

youve picked a char with proly the nicest following on the boards

but on your question, you can either shield grab, jump over or, distance yourself from them enough to use your own smash after they whiff theirs

The problem with jumping over the smashes is that if I try to then attack them from the air they just smash-up. Should I be short hopping (probably not, doesn't seem like that will avoid any attacks)?

So it looks like I should be using my throws as counters more often, then? Any throw in particular?

up throw to trap them in aerials usually, make sure you are constantly hitting them. Also, if you're able to start predicting them doing these smashes, then simple shield up or dodge, wait for their inevitable opening and get them with a quick hit or grab.

I didn't say he was for everyone, just that he has traits that can appeal to everyone. still different.

and, Beak, if they keep up-smashing you as you come from above, try up-B. the spring will hurt them. then you go into mindgame tactics.

Yeah. The problem with noobs is they don't understand the game enough to realize they are being toyed with or tricked. They're gonna smash even if there's no chance they'll hit you most the time, so going in an opportunity where someone with experience would react differently, a noob will be spamming his smash attacks regardless.

It's kind of like when I played tennis in high school. Sometimes I'd have more trouble with the new, crappy players just because their shots were so random and skillless I didn't expect them, whereas good players I could expect tricking me, so I always knew there'd be a trick coming.

yeah my friends are mega casual and don't even own a wii, but they still love the game.
so sometimes it's hard to play against them rather then an experienced player.
like in soccer it's easier to dribble past someone who knows how to defend because they go for the fakes, but ppl who don't know soccer just kick wildly at the ball and sadly they get the ball.

Yet once again, the solution to everything ever is to perfect shield approach. Sidestepping with Sonic is almost pointless, perfect shielding is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better. Learn it, love it.

Sonic's down aerial goes through upward smash attacks like butter, i think. So get enough distance over your opponent so that you won't be hit but not too much that they'll be able to avoid your attack.

Station, Sonic's dair has a deceptive amount of priority, and not in the good way. I get knocked outta it so much that I've started to refrain from using it as anything but a surprise or a really quick way to get back down.

RPK, I love you. 3rd Strike is too good.

Yeah, dair is pretty useless IMO.

It's EXTREMELY predictable and has NO priority.
