It's not *useless* but yeah it's often more trouble than it's worth. Malwarebytes is great for weekly check-ups. Also Web of Trust is pretty great.

MSE + Malwarebytes + Good computer knowledge and I've been safer on my computer while arguably doing way more dangerous things on it than my entire family on their own computers.

My brother has had to reformat
My mother had the FBI lockout (fixed that)
My other brother's McAfee (HAHAHAHA) got virused somehow and would always shut down it's own firewall.

And i'm sitting here without ever having a major problem on mine.
