Prince Charles and the Duchess were unharmed as the window of the Jaguar was smashed and the car was covered in paint.

An eyewitness said the couple became separated from their police escort as they drove up Regent Street towards the London Palladium, and found themselves in the midst of crowds who had just left the protest in Trafalgar Square. Protesters bombarded the car with bottles and bins.

Nine police officers have been seriously injured in the violence and a number of protesters have attempted to storm the Treasury building.

The protests have come as a response to the Government voting to increase university tuition fees threefold to up to £9,000 a year today. Protests have occurred over the last few weeks and the latest protests today have come as a response to the outcome.

Riot police forced back protesters who were smashing windows and trying to break into a side door of the Treasury. Protesters also smashed windows at the Supreme Court.

Earlier protesters had forced their way into Parliament Square and pressed against lines of police in front of the Houses of Parliament.

The vote will mean fees being almost tripled, as the government saw its majority cut by three-quarters in a backbench rebellion.

I think there's a general feeling of annoyance at these students. They're protesting about the fact that they might have to pay up to £9,000 a year for their uni, but they don't have to pay it back until they're making over £21,000 a year. And everywhere is getting hit by cuts, something like 320,000 people in the public centre are going to lose their jobs, this student debt rise is nothing compared to that.

Though I do find it rather ironic that England's uni fees are rising yet here in Scotland it's completely free, and you get paid if you remain in education after the age of 16, something they're also scrapping in England. Ouch.

jolly old england. hohoho.
I think the price hike is ridiculous. Of course, so are the students. I don't really understand the economics of this decision but at face value, it seems better to cut university places than make everybody graduate with more debt. Now we'll just get a bigger class divide.

I was annoyed enough when I entered university (tuition fees were raised from £1,000 >>> £3,000 a year). £9,000 is crazy. I would be graduating with ~£80-90k of debt if I started my course now.

Good thing, I already thought it was a bit ridiculous to pay students to go to school.

As I watched this on the news I was going, "hell yeah thats what they get." It reminds you of what the founders of the US of A stood for. Its always the people who have to pick up the tab. It's even worse that they targeted the students. =/

The founders of the USA stood for random unprovoked violence?

They royal family have absolutely nothing, quite literally absolutely nothing, to do with these student fees. It's the government that rose the fees, the royal family has no say in it, Prince Charles and Camila were just driving past and were attacked for no reason.

Some of the students were chanting "Tory scum" (the Tories are the party in government right now, and are historically known to support the rich) at them whilst they attacked. What made this even more absurd is that the Royals don't even vote.

We have to pick up their tab, but they cost a taxpayer 61p (about 96 cents) a year, and they bring millions in tourism and help with relations with other countries and really big up the armed forces.

So seriously, they were attacked for absolutely no reason.

So funny i was there a week after this and they were still upset.
Brits riot for fun.
They're also protested because the party that helped raise tuition fees had made the promise that they would not raise them during their election campaign. A lot of students voted for them because of this, and a few months after they got into power they tripled the fees.
