This Wednesday I’ll be on a plane to the United States of America. It marks my first time ever to leave the European continent and I’m quite excited. While I plan to go sightseeing in Washington DC, Philadelphia (Rocky stairs!) and of course NYC, the main attraction is without a doubt Pound 4… the biggest Melee tournament to date with over 300 attendants, not to mention the largest European attendance American tournaments have ever seen. Confirmed Europeans are: Adam, Amsah, Faab, Remen, Utto, Zgetto and myself from the Netherlands, ajp_anton, Aniolas, Armada, Captain Jadde and Sparken from Sweden, Overtriforce and Strawhat Dahean from Spain and Jonas and stelzig from Denmark. I don’t think I’ve missed any, but I’ll gladly edit them in if I have.
Why go now? I find myself asking that question, considering it’s been more than 7 years since that first tournament in MrSilver’s basement. There was talk of going to American tournaments before, especially TG6, but it never happened. Too young, not enough money… Obstacles that have since been overcome. Personal reasons aside, it’s safe to say Armada’s performance at Genesis was an inspiration to all of us back home. Europe has always been underrated and Genesis might very well have been the beginning of recognition and appreciation for an often belittled community. In Melee, that is. None of Europe’s top Brawlers are coming along for the ride, but they just might in the future.
I’ve been asked about my predictions for Pound a few times already, so I’ll share them here as well. I think Europe will have a strong showing by claiming several top 10 spots and at least one spot in finals. I actually expect Mango to take first, but both Amsah and Armada have a very reasonable shot at the title in my opinion. The other Europeans are also not to be underestimated, most notably Remen and Zgetto, who will find themselves with a character that is a lot better than its (still top tier!) PAL counterpart. I often find myself pondering why Fox never takes American tournaments and hope to be able to back up my theories once all is said and done.
I’m looking forward to finally meeting the players who until now I only knew through vids, SWF handles and the occasional picture. We will get to see The_Doug again, the American who showed us the ropes during his stay in the UK all those years ago. Faab will be reunited with his good friend Cash Mooney and several of our questions will be answered. Is M2K as awkward as he seems? Can JMan cure Utto’s impotence? Is Inui really the Doubles God? What’s up with Mike G: gay, effeminate or white after all? Does Mango sleep with men or is it just his character? And most importantly…
Who is Emma Watson’s boyfriend?
