Practicing edgeguards

first off, i understand that working with actual people is the best option by far, that computers suck and training against them will lead you astray etc. etc. The problem is that most of the time, that's not an option for me. so, to work on stuff to pwn my friends when they DO agree to play (which after all i've put them through isn't much XD), i have to create scenarios in training mode or something (if there's an 'or something' you know about, enlighten me).

edgeguards are a major flaw in my game much of the time, which is pretty sad since my main competitor mains falco. it should be easy. My main moves are bairs, dairs from the stage (not often effective), fsmashes (if he doesn't sweetspot) or ledgehop spikes.

typically to practice i'll set a falco or two to 190% (so i can throw him and get him far enough off the edge to do anything interesting) and experiment. I'll also work on not suiciding off ledgehop spikes and work on not missing with each individual move.

anything you think i should add, change, or stop about this drill? any other options i have?

here's a vid of me just as a reference for how capable (or if you prefer, incapable) i am:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_06LoL1VWoI note that some of my deaths are due to (you guessed it) failed edgeguards

thanks for your help!

I saw the video, right now what I would suggest doing is working on your tech skill.

Once your tech skill improves you can improve your spacing and edgeguarding.

you're still not fluent with all of your tech skill yet, you dont fast fall short hopped aerials at the right time yet, your wavedashing is sloppy, your tech chasing is horrible aswell also things like when you upthrow falco at like 35% try to utilt faster so you hit with the tipper so you can either regrab or keep tilting, but yeah id say the most important thing for you to work on at the moment is your tech skill and speed around the stage and work on your edge gaurding when you actually do get the chance to play a real opponent.

yo dtilt is a general all around ownage edgeguard

also if falco is up-b ing under you (off the stage)
just do the counter on the edge of the stage
this should put him under you and away from the stage a lil
he will then try firebirding
which then you will have to jump out and forward air him
it works like a charm

this works for fox too.

btw watch this video
its lulz

Actually, both your edgeguarding and your onstage methods are flawed. But I'll point out things you are doing wrong and give you tips. At 00:12 you did a full jump fair. To me, this indicates that you haven't mastered Marth's short hop just yet. So remember to practice those more. AT 00:15 you shield while Falco was high in the air with his double jump. Try and break this habit. Instead of shielding...jump up and use Marth's uair. Marth's uair has amazing range and it can cut through any plan Falco has in mind. A few seconds later you attempted an up throw to up tilt combo. The reason it didn't work was because of the the Falco's percentage. Up throw to up tilt won't work on Falco until 35%-40%. I'd recommend you go to training mode and combo various characters. Learn your percents.

I notice you have a huge habit of double jumping after getting thrown into the air. This is the most dangerous habit a player can have...ever. If you get thrown into the air, resist the urge to double jump. Instead, simply DI away from your enemy and use your fair if they get close to you. Now let's discuss edge guarding with Marth. There is a very ideal spot you want to be at when edge guarding with Marth. First, position Marth close to the edge. Now use Marth's down tilt. You know you are standing at the ideal spot when the very tip of Marth's sword goes a little off the stage during the down tilt. If you wish to know more about this edge guarding position, just PM me or write on my wall.

Now for Marth's edge guarding moves. Once you position Marth in the spot I mentioned, you can use Marth's jab (A), forward tilt, forward smash, and down tilt for the edgeguard. Once you become more experienced/comfortable with your character then you can take it a step further. Depending on the situation you can run of the stage, swat your recovering enemy with fair, then Up B back. That's just one out of many edgeguarding tactics. My overall point is that you need to position yourself better and use the proper moves.

But all honesty, you have a lot to work on. I'd recommend watching some pro Marth vids to actually learn how to actually move with Marth. If you want more help, just PM me.

check the marth video thread here, and watch some videos against falco if you are having trouble with the matchup, i mean you seem to have the right idea, but one thing i noticed was the lack of chain grabbing/tech chasing. now personally i think there is no excuse for this cuz the person i play against doesn't tech >< but yeah, chain grabbing the bird makes the match alot easier

also i know people are telling you to work on your other game before edgeguarding, just get in the habit of jabbing fox/falco out of their illusions which sets them in a good position to be edgeguarded. but spacing is key like miggs said, so just keep practicing the gimping until you can do it really well. also ledgehop dairs work well too so once you get l-cancelling down fairly well (short hopping too) you could try that out :)

First thing - LCancel everything. You missed quite a few.

Use Fair to edgeguard - it's the most efficient move for it. Do not tip it. If you tip the Fair, they'll be sent upwards. If you hit with the inside of Marth's sword, then they'll be sent away. You can run off the stage and do this or drop off the edge and do it (stage spike them).

Jabs are also useful and they have a pretty good range. Dtilts are usually expected and easily avoided, but use it if given the opportunity.

Learn how to ledgehop spike.

Counter works on Falco/Fox's UpB sometimes.
