It could always be some graphical thing that they changed later on, I hope not, but it could be.

Did anyone stop to think that it might just be some sort of temporary item similar to the Metal Box or the Cloaking Device? I REALLY hope it is an upgradable RPG-like element, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

It's definitely a possibility, but I think the fact that we've seen it in two seperate screenshots of Fox helps with the idea that it's a permanent/equippable item, and the fact that we've only seen it in a Subspace Emissary is certainly suspicious. I agree with you, though, that we can't treat it as absolute. Maybe they're just a waterwing item that lets people feel safe
