YOU WANNA DIE?!
Seriously why cut jiggs? She is unique, super popular, and just because you don't like her dosent mean they deserve to be cut. Jeez some people..
Hey, its called the "ideal" roster :awesome:
Haha that sounds like something I would say xD
Actually, the roster that MagnesD3 posted is possibly the best possible scenario. I'll agree with that one.

The roster we have now But Just re-add Lucas and wolf and give me Isaac and Dixie and I will be happy as a Groose falling from the sky :'D
Aweeh, You're profile picture brings so much joy to my booty. Also I agree. Lucas and Wolf were the main two I felt bad about. Groose falls into battle? Or something like that. Groose confirmed.

Sorry to anyone I did not reply too! Ive been reading every single post so don't worry.

Top portion represents a sensible roster, while the bottom portion is for characters that I'd really like to be in the game, but for one reason or another, either being a lack of general popularity or not really deserving to take a place on the roster, are not seriously included.
Simon Belmont was chosen over Snake due to having a legacy that intersects more with Nintendo's own. While I don't like Lloyd Irving (or the Tales game as a whole, really) that much, Tales of Symphonia was a very important game for both the Gamecube and the series.

Toon Link (redundant, despite being my favourite version of the character), Zero Suit Samus (redundant, poor representation for Samus/Metroid), Palutena (series doesn't really deserve that much representation), Falco (redundant, Starfox is no longer a relevant series), and Lucario (no longer relevant) were all removed, as well as any clones.

My roster is slimmed down a bit, since smaller casts are typically easier to balance, but streamlined with a wider range of representation in mind.

You have good points! Although now Tales of Symphonia 1 and 2 are available on the ps3, as well as every future tales of game. He would be cool in the game. I don't see nintendo getting rights to him now that he is exclusive to ps3, but he would work well. Simon would be really cool. I still think he should appear at some point, but I don't know if they will fall through with it. A star fox game is finally coming out for the Wii-U but I guess it is kind of redundant.

Here's my 'fair' one if you will. In other words, I kept the same number of characters (Assuming you count the Miis as three, which I do) and (mostly) avoided personal bias. I even kept three clones, just changed some of them.

And this is my incredibly biased roster:

For right now, I'd just keep the SS4 roster and condense the new clones back into their source character, then bring back (most of) the character's that have been cut over the games.

Make Lucina an alt for Marth; removing the tip mechanic isn't enough for me.
Make Dark Pit an alt for Pit again, and his electro arm thing could have been a custom move option.
Dr. Mario...is safe I guess, for the sake of not having to use FLUDD.

Bring back Snake. Do it.
Bring back Lucas as an alt for Ness since he already has his B moves as customs.
Bring back Pichu as an alt for Pikachu, while removing the self-damage mechanic.
Bring back Roy, but similarly to Ike, update him to his Awakening self.
Bring back Ice Climbers, even as a single character with alts to switch between Popo and Nana if need be.
Bring back Mewtwo, but with small tweaks to his moveset and Mega Y as his Final Smash.

This only leaves Young Link on the cutting room floor for certain. Squirtle and Ivysaur would be nice to have back as well, but that would be a LOT of 1st Gen Pokemon representation. So while I would like them back, I don't really need them back...

Pichu wouldn't work as an alt for Pichu. His model varies far too much from the hitbox.

My ideal roster. Well okay, here we go: I tried to make it half-way realistic but I understand that everyone has their own biases and so it's very possible that my roster is waaay too in favor of things I like.

That being said, I decided to go with my ideal of the "smash 64" Which I half consider a joke since Smash first came out on N64, but it would also be a good final roster size since 64 would fit nicely into tournament yada yada my preferences already.

First of all: I made sure to put the mii fighters in there own slot. I feel like the next iteration will keep them, but just like this iteration I feel like the mii fighter may not be considered an official character, which I'm okay with since that gives me the wiggle room for the 64 characters.

Second of all: I kept third party reps down to the three included in this smash. I really do not feel like these three need any further rep in smash as of now. Maybe in future my mind will be changed but as of now I'm sticking to that.

Now, going to the top. The Mario franchise is pretty much dominating the roster, but every addition they've had has managed to be pretty unique and interesting. As such, I think Waluigi and Captain Toad should be the final two Mario characters to join the fight.

Donkey Kong has gone too long without the other two characters being included, so I believe both should make the cut. Dixie and K Rool would both be interesting to play as. Villager and Olimar should return, but their series don't need any more reps in smash in my opinion.

The third row focuses on Zelda. For too long they haven't had a good newcomer. Admittedly Sheik and Toon Link I feel contribute to why we don't see a new rep. So I believe Sheik should be replaced by Impa, who could take her moveset. From there, both Midna and Ghirahim should join. Yes they are popular characters that only existed in one game, but I feel like just because they were in one game doesn't hold them back from joining. Sheik, remember? Finally Captain Falcon and Ness. With both of their series ended as of right now, there's no need for more reps from either series. Sorry Lucas.

Kid Icarus in row four I gave one more rep and replaced Dark Pit from this smash. This is because I believe someone will pick of Kid Icarus and give us a new iteration (Hopefully good) between now and the next smash. As such, I believe Viridi would be the best newcomer since she will most likely return in the next game. After her it would either be Medusa or Hades, and just to avoid over repping the KI females I think putting in Hades would be fun. Plus, at least for the moment, Hades in the main villain and not Medusa. Following it is Metroid, and I put in Ridley because at this point he just needs to be in. I also added in Dark Samus, because my friend (I haven't played the series enough) tells me Dark Samus is almost entirely different and could easily have a unique moveset that would be different from the main samus. You'd have to deal with the similar look of the characters, but that's nothing new or difficult.

The next row I added back in a third star fox rep, but Chose Krystal over Wolf. With her staff she really could have a unique moveset, and Falco could remain so long as they change his FS to his arwing instead. (I can't remember, is it the arwing now?). The Kirby series meanwhile seems to want Bandanna dee, and if a series like KI gets four no reason to deny Kirby a fourth either. Plus a spear could be a cool moveset. Little Mac returns.

Pokemon. As one of Nintendo's biggest sellers it really should be close to Mario in reps. In fact I'm pretty sure Pokemon has outsold Mario on several occasions. However there aren't many more to add so I tried to focus on popular and unrepresented pokemon types. First of all Sceptile for a grass strater to finish the 'trinity' which I think is a smart idea. Then I chose Gardevoir for the Psychic typing, and Gardevoir for the dragon and ground typing. I would possibly choose Scizor for bug and steel typing if Jiggs were to be replaced.

Next is my favorite series Fire Emblem, and it was really hard not to try and over represent them. I kept Marth, Ike, and Robin. Then I chose Lyn. As the first hero in Fire Emblem the Western audiences saw, I think that would be a nice nod. Also since she wields a japanese Katana she could have a really good sword moveset that set her apart from Marth and Ike. However she would definitely need to be the last sword user. So next I chose Tiki. Tiki is now a reoccurring character and a Manakete (Dragon person). You could mix her with some dance-style movements like Ninian from FE7 for attacks, along with maybe a transformation or FS for her dragon form. Finally I think the Blakc knight would make a pretty good villain rep. He'd be slow but he'd be a spear user, to contrast the light and fast Bandanna Dee. Maybe he doesn't flinch until he hits a certain percent or something for a character gimmick. Shulk would obviously return and Isaac should be added as a Golden Sun rep. that series is far too good to die out. and even if it does he deserves it like Captain Falcon and Ness got their spots.

Nothing changes in the final row.

No, I did not forget that alts exist. They are pretty hard to show off though and the roster maker doesn't have many doubles to work off of, so I'll try my best.

Dr. mario for Mario, Mr. L for Luigi (With de papered appearance), Daisy for Peach, Captain Toadette, Dry Bowser for Bowser, the koopalings for Bowser jr. and finally the yoshi colors are enough for Yoshi. Rosalina doesn't require an alt.

Wario already has an alt, Waluigi could maybe have a sports outfit alt, Funky could be a Donkey alt, now diddy, dixie, or K. rool alts come to mind. Female Villager for Villager, and the return of Alph for Olimar (I forgot about him when making the alts).

Dark Link, Fierce Diety Link, and SS Link for Link swamos, Maybe a terta style and Hilda style alt for Zelda (Or HW), and maybe a Ganon style alt for Ganondorf. Midna and Ghirahim wouldn't really have any alts I could think of. Falcon could have a Black shadow Alt and Ness could have a Lucas alt.

Next in KI. Dark Pit for Pit, and Maybe Medusa for Hades. I originally put Pandora in there as an alt but I can't think who she'd make a good alt for so eh. Samus doesn't really need the alts since I focused more on adding character, but a metal ridley would be interesting and a light suit true alt for Samus maybe.

Woolf could make a Fox alt pretty easily and Leon could be a Falco alt I think. Yarn kirby for Kirby maybe and Waddle Doo version of Bandanna dee maybe. The only Pokemon with an alt would be Lucario with Mewtwo I think, since the two have had similar movesets and it could work well enough.

For Fire Emblem, a Lucina alt for Marth and a Female Robin alt, and a Hardin alt for the Black knight since the two would be similar characters. Maybe a Fiora alt for Shulk (Though I haven't played Xenoblade so don't quote me on the viability of that) and a Matthew alt for Isaac. Male Wii fit of course is another one.

For the 3rd party characters I figure giving them an alt wouldn't be THAT bad in the long run, so I chose Ms. Pac-man, Bass, and Shadow. I think those characters are relatively popular and close enough to the playable character that a viable alt could be made. Also you can't forget custom moves are now a thing.

So this concludes my long winded ideal smash roster. How viable is it? I have no idea. But hopefully I entertained you with the idea, and at the least you think a 'Smash 64' would be pretty cool too.

My perfect roster is just the same as it is but eliminating Dr Mario, decloning clones and recovering old forgotten guys (Roy, Mewtwo, Lucas, Wolf...). If that was the case, I would say: Sakurai, you are awesome (although I need Ridley).

I'm okay with the roster we have currently, but if I was able to change it, there would be some changes.
Take off Dr. Mario and bring back Wolf and Ice Climbers.
Add a DK rep and Metroid rep, I don't care if its Ridley. I think those two series need another rep.
The one newcomer I wanted for SSB4 was N from Pokemon, but Black and White would be outdated by the time Smash 5 releases.
As for alternate costumes, I would add a Roy alt for Marth, Shiny Lucario, and Pajama toon link.

Get ready for an awesome (in my biased eyes :p), giant roster that will never happen:

  • Damn, Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, and Fire Emblem all take up half the damn roster lmao. Why? Well, no Smash fan creating a roster is going to be without bias, so I chose the 3 series that have always had lots of characters anyway to be biased on and expand upon. Fire Emblem has this treatment now, as well, if only for its ludicrously enormous amount of likable characters that all have a sort of relevance within the series, and that its popularity here in the West can only grow after Fire Emblem: Awakening's success. Not that I'm not willing to trim down on those 4 series next time, as I already have a desire to trim my roster even further. Half the roster IS pretty ridiculous, lol

  • Why are there 2 Toads? Well, the blue one is a Mario clone to fill in the gap Dr. Mario left (he's gone now), while Captain Toad plays unique, to satisfy both original Toad supporters and me, someone who wanted Toad as a Mario clone.

  • Why the hell would you ever choose Professor E. Gadd? Well, my Mario doesn't have F.L.U.D.D. because it obviously didn't mesh well with Mario. As it is, it's useless for him, and if you improve it and make it dynamic, Mario stops embodying the ideal of being the most balanced character in the game because now he has a gimmick. So I decided to add F.L.U.D.D.'s inventor himself, E. Gadd, to use it.

  • Why are there 5 Links? Are you out of your MIND!? And who the hell are Nomad Link and Knight Link? I personally think I kinda am, lol. But anyway, I wanted to follow my personal trend of having Mario, Link, Pikachu, and Marth all having 2 other clones (Wolf is still a pseudo-clone as well). However, Link has always been able to do more than use boomerangs, bows and arrows, and bombs, so I wanted to add 2 extra Links to fill the gap, as well as bring Young Link back.
    • Toon Link's Project M moveset is now on the returning Young Link (he was always his spiritual successor anyway) and Toon Link has a spiffy new moveset based on the items and abilities found throughout the Toon games, like the Four Swords games, Minish Cap, and all the Wind Waker games.
    • Nomad Link is a name I gave to the Link from the first 2 Zelda games, since Hyrule Historia describes him as being a traveler of sorts, never staying in one place too long, before he encounters Impa and she sets him off on his quest in both games. He's the other Link clone, and instead of a spin attack he uses the flute to recover (using its tornado) to differentiate him from the other 2. His normals are also different in that he attacks mostly by stabbing, a reference to how limited he was in the first 2 Zelda games
    • The Link from A Link to the Past, Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons, and Link's Awakening are all the same person--the Link who's been in the most games should get his own spot, I felt, and I christened him Knight Link since he came from a lineage of the Knights of Hyrule, as his uncle told him. He uses a variety of items from those games, and I already made a moveset for him in the New Characters for Project M thread, as some of you may recall.

  • Lucina's still a clone? Yeah, but in my personal roster she's been further freshened up so she feels more like a half-clone now, with different weight and physics, 2 different specials, about more than half of the same normals rather than all (think Mario and Luigi's relationship). Roy has his Project M moveset so he's closer to Marth than she is, ironically.

  • Wait, Captain Falcon isn't next to Ganondorf. Aren't they clones? Nah, like Toon Link, Ganondorf is a character that also changes significantly, as in he's completely unique now. For those who liked playing a slow, stronger, heavier-hitting Captain Falcon clone, I added Black Shadow to fill the exact same role.

  • Aww, you added so many different characters from newly represented games but not my favorite. Why? Well, there were a ton of different characters to choose from, I couldn't possibly add everyone without cluttering up the already giant roster, so I'm afraid I picked favorites this time.

  • Who the hell is Daitoryo? The sorta-mascot behind Nintendo's hanafuda cards. Each Smash game always includes a character representing an early part of Nintendo's history (Melee had Mr. Game & Watch, Brawl had R.O.B., Smash 4 had Duck Hunt representing the Zapper in general) so I went for broke and repped the very first thing Nintendo ever made, lol

  • You actually included those stupid Chorus Men? Yes, Chorus Men are included, if only because one day they WILL be in another Smash whether we like it or not. Take their inclusion here as more of a prediction than a personal want.

  • How come Snake and Mega Man get extra characters from their company but not Sonic or Pac-Man? Well, Konami and Capcom are host to more games with characters that would theoretically hype tons of fans all around the world. People would go nuts over Simon, Bomberman, and Ryu, but Sega doesn't have too many hype-worthy characters that would be on the same level besides Sonic. I'm sure some fans would be hype over Ristar or NiGHTS or Heihachi, but if we're being honest that won't be a lot compared to the 3 I just mentioned. Or hey, maybe I'm just a big biased meanie, and I'm missing some real hype-worthy characters from those companies. I was actually planning on giving Konami, Capcom, Square Enix, Sega, Namco, and Ubisoft 3 characters each, but decided that while each company had one big hype-worthy character (Snake / Simon / Bomberman for Konami, Mega Man for Capcom, a Final Fantasy character for Square Enix, Sonic for Sega, Pac-Man for Namco, and Rayman for Ubisoft), I thought I had to stretch it for 2 extra characters for Sega, Namco, and Ubisoft, so I decided to trim it down from 18 to 12. Just chalk it up to personal bias, I suppose.

  • Alright, then where's Rayman? I really wanted Quote, and I wanted to limit third party characters to just 12, so he had to go. Sorry, Ubisoft fans.

  • Why Sir Arthur over other Capcom characters? Well, after Mega Man and Ryu there were a gazillion other great choices like Amaterasu, Viewtiful Joe, Morrigan, etc. that I decided to relieve myself the stress and pick someone from another platforming game. Plus, I read somewhere (I don't have a source) that his series invented the double jump. If that's true, he's worthy because without his game Smash combat wouldn't be possible, lol

I'm aware that even with a 120-character roster I won't please everyone, so I didn't totally preoccupy myself with that. The important thing is that it pleases me, at least.

Dr. Mario is the only cut. He's an alternate costume for Mario now, and his moveset is mostly given to Mario now anyway, with his fireballs having the pills' properties (and turn into pills when you switch to the doctor outfit). This means he has the Tornado. The only thing not carried over is the reverse nair.

I'll keep it at 48.

Mario
Luigi
Peach
Bowser
Bowser Jr.
Rosalina

-6 reps for Mario is perfect. We have the classic 4 in there, show some love for Bowser Jr. and despite me not caring for Rosalina, I still put her in to acknowledge Mario Galaxy.

Link
Zelda
Ganondorf
Toon Link
One of the new Zelda villains (Haven't played any of the newer Zelda games so someone has to help me out here)

-5 reps for the Zelda series with perfect representation for the series' long and storied library of games.

Pikachu
Mewtwo
Lucario
Greninja
Lucario

-You could arguably go with 6 reps for Pokemon but I'll leave it at 5. Mewtwo is back and his Mega Evolution can also represent the new feature in the new Pokemon gen while also paying tribute to Gen 1. Pika, Lucario and Ninja all represent their prescriptive generations.

Donkey Kong
Diddy Kong
Dixie Kong

-I really struggled between K. Rool and Dixie but I decided to go with Girl Power. DK deserves a newcomer.

Fox
Falco
Wolf

-You could go with Krystal but I decided to add a much needed villain.

Kirby
Metaknight
King Dedede

-The Perfect Kirby trio, no need to mess with it.

Marth
Chrom
Robin

-Fire Emblem doesn't need 4 reps. Chrom can be Ike's replacement and Robin also helps bring representation to the game that helped saved the series.

Samus
ZSS
Ridley

-Ridley's in! Ridley's in! Thank God almighty that Ridley's in!

Pit
Palutena

-I guess Kid Icarus does deserve a newcomer for Uprising

Ness
Lucas

-**** you Sakurai, Mother 3 is one of the most loved games in Nintendo's history.

Single standing characters:
Yoshi
Wario
C. Falcon
Olimar
Villager
Isaac

Retro Characters:
Ice Climbers
R.O.B.
Game & Watch
Duck Hunt

3rd Party:
Sonic
Megaman
Pacman

Boom! That's how you put out a perfect roster. Each series is represented perfectly and we do Nintendo justice. This is video games' best collection of characters, we don't waste slots with Dark Pit's.

Where did that render of Lucas come from :'D

Pichu wouldn't work as an alt for Pichu. His model varies far too much from the hitbox.
They don't have to use the previous model with the DRASTICALLY different proportions. They can make tweaks so that it works out as best they can.

Current character -> character that replaces it

Dr. Mario -> Geno
Greninja -> Mewtwo
Lucina -> Ridley
Dark Pit -> Snake
One of Pikachu's alt skins -> Pichu.
One of Ness' alt skins -> Lucas
Pac-Man -> Ice Climbers
Shulk's final smash containing Riki and Dunban -> Shulk's final smash containing Reyn and Fiora. Yes, I'm fully aware of what happens in the game, and I am a HUGE fan of Riki. But Reyn and Fiora are Shulk's best friends. Plus, Riki's an assist trophy

Like I am pretty happy with the current roster (especially because of Robin) and dont ever really want anyone to be cut but here are some characters I would've loved to see.
Dillon (Dillon's Rolling Western)
Ephiram (FE:Sacred Stones)
Wolf O'Donnell
Chesnaught
Lucas
Rawk Hawk (Paper Mario: TTYD)
Another F-Zero rep (Black Shadow, Deathborn, Bio-rex, someone who could easily be a fighter)
Chrom
Ghirahim
Wolf Link
Hades (Kid Icarus: Uprising)

Here are some skins I would've liked to see.
Bowser: Dark Bowser
Midbus

Toon Link: Outset Island Link

Gannondorf: Hyrule Warriors Gannon
Demise

Oh, why not, I'll figure something out!

This is what I'd ideally like to see. Bear in mind that it's not intended to be a realistic or likely roster, it's just what I'd like to see if I was allowed go wild and play around with the cast of characters. I'll attempt to keep it to a relatively realistic number of characters (64, not counting Mii Fighters) and will provide reasons for my suggested newcomers with that. Newcomers / returning vets will be highlighted in yellow; alts will be highlighted in green. This is all subject to change and only represents what I'd like to see right now.

Mario (Dr Mario) / Luigi / Peach (Daisy) / Bowser / Rosalina & Luma / Bowser Jr (Koopalings) / Captain Toad
Donkey Kong / Diddy Kong / Dixie Kong / King K. Rool
Yoshi (Birdo)
Wario
Link / Zelda / Ganondorf / Toon Link / Sheik / Impa / Tingle
Pikachu / Jigglypuff / Charizard / Lucario / Greninja / Mewtwo
Samus (Dark Samus) / Zero Suit Samus / Ridley
Pit (Dark Pit) / Palutena (Medusa)
Kirby / Meta Knight / King Dedede / Bandana Dee
Marth (Lucina) / Ike / Robin / Chrom
Pikmin & Olimar (Alph)
Fox (Wolf) / Falco
Captain Falcon (Blood Falcon)
Little Mac
Ness (Lucas) / Porky
Wii Fit Trainer
Shulk / Wonder Red / Inkling / Mallo
Isaac (Matthew) / Andy (Sami)
Takamaru / Ray Mk II / Lip
Mr Game & Watch / R.O.B. / Duck Hunt / Ice Climbers
Sonic / Mega Man / Pac-Man / Professor Layton
Mii Fighters

Captain Toad - Toad is among Mario's longest-standing and most loyal allies - his new Wii U spin-off series promises to paint the intrepid 'shroom in an entirely new light and has only served to increase his popularity. Moves inspired by trekking for hidden treasures, summoning his spaceship, enlisting the aid of other Toads and solving puzzles to advance forward mean he is a distinctive and tactical fighter, unique amongst his fellow allies

Dixie Kong - This cute Kong was due to be added to Brawl's roster alongside her pal Diddy Kong, but she was scrapped for unspecified reasons. With her returning to the splotlight in Tropical Freeze and the Donkey Kong series overall experiencing a recent renaissance, she's certainly deserving of her chance to shine. Wields her hair, guitar, bubblegum gun and agile athleticism to stand out from her fellow Kongs

King K. Rool - Among the most requested characters worldwide and an iconic villain, he would provide some much-needed love for the Donkey Kong series and excite veteran fans of the series with his glorious return. A powerful and heavyweight fighter, his variety of weapons and costumes over the years means his moveset writes itself: expect kannonballs, helicopters, krown-throwing and seismic shockwaves

Impa - After the bearers of the Triforce, Impa is essentially the Zelda series' next most iconic character; her recent appearances in Skyward Sword and Hyrule Warriors has helped revitalise the character and gives her plenty of depth and potential. A strong, agile fighter with ninja-like reflexes and powerful samurai-inspired weaponry would stand out in the Zelda cast

Tingle - The fan favourite (though many would contest that opinion) dark horse of the Zelda series, this quirky chap has appeared in many titles since his initial appearance and has become synonymous with...well, general weirdness and joke characters as a general concept. His moves would make use of his balloons, bombs, Tingle Tuner and thusly-named "Fairy Magic" for a truly bizarre and unpredictable fighting style

Mewtwo - This addition needs no explanation. A fan favourite that has been sorely missed for years, he is the perfect vet to return to the roster

Ridley - Controversial? Certainly, but not without merit. The perennial villain of the Metroid series, he is highly requested and notorious amongst even his own fanbase for innumerable reasons. Still, he is an iconic villain who would give Metroid some much-deserved representation; his use of feral weaponry and air-based combat would provide a dangerous and distinct fighting style

Bandana Dee - A true ensemble dark horse, his role as a major protagonist in Kirby's Adventure Wii has ignited fans' passion and proved that even the most simple and innocuous of enemies can become an unlikely ally and capable fighter. His spear-wielding skills are unprecedented in Smash and would feature close-range combos and long-range pokes in equal measure

Chrom - He was a fan favourite for a long, long time and was thought to be a guaranteed addition to the roster. The unexpected reveal of Robin meant Chrom was relegated to a few nice cameo appearances - but why not go the extra mile and make him his own character? Standing between Marth and Ike, he would wield the holy power of the Falchion and summon aid from the Divine Dragon, Naga

Porky - More representation for Mother is always good, and who better than the recurring villain of the series? Wielding his almighty mechanical armour and a variety of dirty, underhanded devices up his tyrannical sleeves, he would represent the deadly foil to Ness's heroic antics - not to mention showing some well-desered love to Nintendo's vast history of grandiose and memorable antagonists

Wonder Red - The Wonderful 101 is a new IP of Nintendo's that has introduced us to the eponymous superhero team. With the help of his one hundred stalwart allies and a variety of over-the-top and versatile weapons, Wonder Red has a strong cult following and would be a powerful, adaptable fighter, able to suit any situation and handle even the deadliest of opponents with fists, swords, guns, whips - you name it, he can wield it

Inkling - The surprise hero of Nintendo's upcoming releases, Splatoon has already gained a determined following and bears a massive amount of moveset potential. Already a fan favourite before she's even appeared in an official game, this dark horse squid girl would wield paint-based weaponry and would be able to swim through her ink splatters to enhance her chaotic, free-for-all shooting gameplay

Mallo - Representing Nintendo's recent Pullblox series, this cute little sumo wrestler has a small yet endearing fanbase and some truly fun abilities. Push, pull, grapple and even wield the power of gravity itself - his moves would be puzzle-based and allow for some quick-thinking, defensive gameplay

Isaac - The hero of the cult classic Golden Sun series, he is a fan favourite with a powerful arsenal of psychic powers and summonable familiars at his beck and call. He can control the essence of the earth itself and boost his abilities with the aid of his Psynergy skills and Djinn allies, making him a fighter that requires strength and tactics in equal measure

Andy - The hero of the similarly cult classic Advance Wars series, he is in much the same boat as Isaac: a fan favourite character who represents the entirety of his respective series. Commanding an army of soldiers, tanks, ships and planes, he would stand out as a tactical and versatile defensive / zoning character with elements of resource management and precise strategies

Takamaru - Among the most requested characters for Smash 4, the noble and intrepid samurai isn't "just another anime sword-fighter": he's got all sorts of weapons in his bag of tricks! Get up close and personal to fight with his trusty katana or throw knives and scythes from afar - he can fight in close-range and in long-range alike and has the right armaments for any task!

Ray Mk II - Custom Robo may not be a very well-known series, but this little guy has gained many new fans thanks to his inclusion as an Assist Trophy in Brawl. Not only would he wield jets, lasers, rockets and beams, his moveset would also be totally customisable in order to represent the customisable fighters of his own series

Lip - A self-proclaimed favourite of Sakurai, Panel de Pon is already present in Smash in the form of the iconic Lip's Stick item - but what about our fairy friend herself? Her abilities would involve wielding her eponymous weapon to command the natural world around her and boost her abilities by combining puzzle parts together, making her a lightweight fighter with tactical priorities and a lot of creative puzzle-based potential

Ice Climbers - Again, not much needs to be said here. Classic veterans with a strong cult following, they are Smash mainstays and deserve their chance to shine

Professor Layton - A surprise third-party fighter, though only technically: the Professor Layton series is so synonymous with Nintendo's handheld library, it really is a puzzle as to why the man himself hasn't appeared yet! His variety of home-made weapons, capable allies, resourceful strategies and puzzle-based gameplay would make him a truly creative and original fighter, certainly impressive enough to stand amongst Nintendo's finest

EDIT - 21/9/14: Removed Tiki and Anna, added Chrom and Lip; replaced Toad with Captain Toad; added Sami as an alt for Andy; tidied up the layout to make for easier and more convenient perusal

EDIT - 21/9/14: Added section for newcomer rationale

EDIT - 22/9/2014: Cleaned up newcomer rationale, added more information on fighters

I'm curious, who is Lip?
Glad you asked! :D

Lip is the fairy of flowers from the game Panel de Pon. It was later brought overseas under names like Tetris Attack and Pokemon Puzzle League. As you'd probably guess, she's the owner of the Lip's Stick item in the Smash games.

I was hoping that she'd replace Dr. Mario as Smash's puzzle game character but sadly, it wasn't meant to be. I think it would have been a great opportunity. She's a deserving female character... one who's the main character of her own series (the only other female character that does this is Samus) and it would have been an excellent opportunity to spark Western interest in Panel de Pon the same way Melee did for Fire Emblem.

Wow, thanks for all the info! I never knew any of this. I also had no clue where the lipstick item even came from. I never got to play any Panel de Pon games personally. But I have seen them a bit. Are you a puzzle game fan perhaps? Ive always sucked at them.

The roster we got for both versions of Smash Bros. 4 is perfect as it is, except I would remove Dr. Mario, Bowser Jr., Dark Pit, Sonic and Mii Fighters from it and bring back Roy, Wolf and Snake and add Chrom as the newcomer.

Debatable, just like any roster. XD Sadly, there will never be a roster everyone can be happy with, cause everyone complains. I'm glad you think it's perfect though. I think its great too, but not perfect.
