Possibly a new technique/DI. (momentum canceling)

In the video you will notice Bowser being hit off the stage and practically canceling his momentum using a Fair.

This can be used for recovery and crazy DI. I have no idea if someone has already brought this up, but I thought it was interesting so I'm posting it here =]

In this video you notice Mario stopping his momentum while being hit off the stage several times with Fair and different aerials.

It seems like it will be a very important thing to learn when brawl comes out. Since it doesn't have a name we can just call it (Momentum Canceling)

In the new videos of the Subspace Emissary, Mario does this as well during his battle with Kirby. It does seem to provide an insane amount of DI.

Yeah, it seems to just cancel the momentum.

But you'll have to wiggle out of tumbling first to take advantage of this.

Ya from what I noticed you can only do it at low percents. Although at higher percents you can probable Tumble Recover then aerial, like you said. =]

Its pretty crazy though and will probably play a very important role in competitive brawl, imo.

It'd be a form of momentum slowing, not DI. I don't think the FAir is actually doing anything to help from watching other videos. Also, from what Gimpy says, Bowser survives to ridiculous percents with just DI so it could just be the player FAiring to FAir.

I say we call it the Koopa Claw, cause that's what it is.

Yes, I know it gives him momentum now, but it's the same Move. I believe.

That's his forward B, right? Doesn't seem new, you could do this with any momentum gaining move in Melee as long as you aren't stunned.

My post was eaten, so I'll try this again.

In this video, you can see the same effect. Mario recovers extremely quickly at a relatively high percentage, and uses his Fair to cancel all of his momentum (twice!). It seems you recover from stun much easier, now.

Unrelated, but awesome: Hat removal taunt!

EDIT: Kyu Puff, that's definitely Bowser's Fair. It has that little arc displayed on it now.

Stopping and the changing of momentum is exactly what DI is, lol. The Fair is actually stopping his momentum all together from the looks of the video. And yes the person is probably Fairing just to Fair but that still doesn't change the fact it is stopping his momentum while being hit off the stage. =] Since I haven't played the demo I cant really say every character can do this, but if every character "CAN" then this will be a very important thing to learn when brawl comes out.

EDIT: Yes, you could do this in melee with some characters and some moves. But it hardly even did anything. While in brawl it seems it will play a very important role in competitive game play and DI.

At the end of the video, is Mario doing his Smash 64 Air attack? The spin? He did it in the Mr. Resetti update, could we finally see more?!

I'm not really seeing it. Looks to me like they all just DI'ed back towards the stage, and attacked for no reason as the stun wore off. But yeah, that's some really strong DI which we've already heard about.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is just regular DI that has been made more effective.

Just because a move has a property doesnt mean we need to give names to everything.

I mean, fox's shine sorta does that, right? I dont think theres a name for it beyond the name of the move. When other characters use moves mid-air for non attacking purposes, whether it be mario's cape, or ganon's down B or marth's side B, we dont give them names.

Just know that forward A has momentum canceling properties and be done with it.

DI is directional influence. it only changes the angle (direction!) you get launched when hit (and the initial spot you get launched from with smash DI), but doesnt affect the speed you get sent flying at all.

at least it didnt in melee. and im pretty sure it will stay the same.

this could be something new, though.

I'd just like to say that this happens AGAIN in the Mario/Pit subspace emissary video floating around Youtube. He does it once or twice.

While it does seem like a very strong DI, the fact that we keep seeing the developers producing videos where they are repeatedly using this technique as a part of their standard gameplay makes me suspicious.

EDIT: Video here, shortly after 2:10.

While it is possible that this is simply improved, DI, it remains that in MANY videos players ARE using moves right as this would coincidentally happen. We've got loads of video evidence of this, and in loads of 'em people just happen to use an aerial move right as this phenomenon occurs?

Seems to me, at least, that it's a result of the aerials.
