Hi, I'm new here. Just read this. I was bored.
Why Pokemon should not be seen as just a game for kids.
The other day, two of my 15-16 year old friends were simply harassed, because they were fighting a pokemon. Pokemon is an RPG, in which you start with a starter pokemon, who you use to fight other pokemon or pocket monsters and then you catch them with different types of pokeballs. The longer they fight, the stronger the pokemon get, it is a method called “leveling up.” I am typing this without any premeditation so bear with me. Now, some of my other friends play games like World of Warcraft and Gaia Online. In these games, you do a similar thing, however you control only one person, and you must fulfill certain quests to make him stronger and to customize him. The same rule applies to pokemon however; it is seemingly dumbed down so that mere three year olds are able to beat the game. However, if one was to analyze pokemon online, they might see how truly deep the game is compared to many others. In pokemon online, you get a team of 3 or 6 pokemon, it depends on the settings, and you fight another person with a same sized group. When fighting, one must take account the many parts of the fight. Each pokemon has a different level of attack, defense, special attack, speed, etc. They also have special types like fire; ice, grass, and flying that distinguish some from another. Each pokemon can have four moves and each move has a typing ability. Each typing reacts to the others in a different way. For example, a ghost type move, being super effective against a poison, cannot touch a dark type, However, fighting, which is super effective against dark type, cannot touch ghost types and is not very effective against flying types. What brings the game into more depth, is the fact that each pokemon has a special ability. Shedinja’s ability, wonder guard, makes it so that he has to be hit by something super effective in order to die. If someone has a Shedinja on his or her team, and you have nothing that is super effective against it, you cannot win the match. Typing makes the game very advanced. It is actually, arguably, more advanced than Warcraft of Warcraft player versus player fighting. For example, there is not typing involved at all. The only real thing that effects battles is how strong you are. Like, in pokemon, someone might have a level 100 normal type, and the normal type has all normal moves. If you pitted a level 5 ghost type against it, trusting that the ghost type has at least one non ghost move, the ghost type would win. However, in a game like WoW, World of Warcraft, the strongest man always wins. When using a mage, regardless of the opponents character type, the same strategies are used. The same spells used over and over, nothing is different. However, WoW is made out to be a game for adults and many people rule out pokemon because of its kidish nature. The only reason for this is the fact that in WoW the character design is more complex, and the voices are not annoying. In conclusion, no matter how complex something is, when people think it looks childish, they trash it, calling it garbage and just a game for kids. However, when someone sees a game where people are fighting with “real objects” not elemental attacks coming out of the mouths of monsters, no matter how complex, and interesting it is, many people will prefer the game with the complex character design, cussing, and real fighting over the complex gameplay.
