The planking is only working effectively there because Snake doesn't have good followups with regarding ledges. He can do one attack and then he has to slowly upB back to stage and he'll get hit.
He's just plain not good in this situation...
Try planking against a Meta Knight. I doubt you'll get the same result as you did with Snake.
