Alright, so I was playing my cousin Smash 64 and he plays a MEAN Kirby... he basicaly 5 stocks everyone he plays with the occasional 4 stock. He is also very good with Pikachu but not nearly as good as he is with Kirby.

With Kirby's many jumps that can follow you and gimp you.. and his Dair and up B spikes/semi spikes.. and the annoying inhale and jump off the edge..

I was wondering what exactly makes Pikachu better than Kirby?

Pikachu is better then kirby simply because only noobs/no skills people use kirby.

Quit kirby and use pikachu, you'll see the game is actually fun to play. =)

Pikachu has better priority, combos, IMO better recovery, is faster and better at edgeguarding

Kirby players, are very hard to deal with if they're cheap but get your friend to play online, I guarantee there are ALOT of people who could beat him

Because the techniques you mentioned aren't as effective on high-skilled players as Pika's techniques. They mainly work on noobs. Except the dair maybe. Just try to find a way against the techniques your foe's kirby does. Like: when you recover, try a different timing so he doesn't know when to use UpB. Mash buttons when you're swallowed. Etc.

This thread has made me lol :p. Might as well go through them:

@Agony - Fun is subjective. Gaying people can be fun too sometimes, depending on how you gay them. But, more or less you're joking, cause there weren't any solid reasons. :p Though, every nub and their mother uses Korby, so meh.

@craigg - Correct except IMO was the wrong acronym to use, and if Kirby is hard to deal with if he's cheap that means Kirby SHOULD be cheap. :p

Either way I don't have fun playing as Korby [except the occasional lol matches]. Kirby's utilt is good too, you really need to get him to use it. Z-Cancel a dair into a few utilts to a bair.

Mentioning anything else would be repeating the thread, so I'll tell you what I know:
- Let go of the stick after a horizontal UpB so that you won't fall RIGHT after doing it. Gets you more distance [on second burst is better, or if you're only doing one on that one].
- Pikachu's throws kill early, but he can do so many nasty things that it's better in a later % or when the opponent screws up [or if you can edgeguard him whenever]
- Down B is only really good as an off the top KO. So many people spam it near the ground, it's embarrasing.
- FSmash = Good edgeguard move. Uair better if you can get there.
- You can go ALL the way close to the blastzone, edgeguard, and come back. Some help from first thing might be required.
- Learn to Z-Cancel. Might help a good bit. :p

Ask an actual Pika player for better stuff.

Your friend is just better than you. And he sucks at pika.

What? How is this happening? If kirby inhales you and falls, it's so easy to escape out of him that he'll usually end up getting gimped because when kirby is forced to recover low offstage, he's so easily intercepted it's not fair.

Anyway, pika is faster, has better combos, a less predictable recovery, and more finishers (including his grabs which are far superior to kirby's).

If you play Kirby ultra-campy with excessive utilts and the like, he becomes very hard to beat, but Pika has far more tools and equally broken stuff in his arsenal.

Fireblaster is right, your friend just probably has the fundamentals of the game down better than everyone he plays, with a little edge in tech skill too I imagine.

Yeah... my problem is I play Brawl... and I try to airdodge and spotdodge only to see me get owned.

I had not played smash 64... since... well Smash Melee came out.

And when I played him I basicaly sucked because I absolutely everything I tried did not work haha.

I couldn't charge smashes... spotdodge.. airdodge.. etc lol

I found charging smashes useless in the second two games unless the shield broke. Only use I found for it was in Brawl as an edgeguard attempt with certain characters, and the game is slow enough anyways.

Shorthop and Z-Cancel works nice. Also, next time you play him, press the taunt button on the respawn platform to freak him out. :p

Referencing a friend is never good to use in your smash-related arguments, ever. >.>

In addition to everything that other people have said (better combos, recovery, approach options, equally strong gimp game, etc.) pikachu actually just beats kirby in head to head because of pikachu's better aerial mobility and his UAIR. His uair is insane. Don't underestimate it.

I don't think you can escape Kirby's inhale if he gets you mid-air. You just have to fall and wait until you come out automatically.

even though Kirby has 5 jumps, pikachu has the better recovery, this is because Pikachus ^b is better than Kirbys so when they have to rely on their ^b, Pikachu can recover while Kirby cannot. Pikachus attack also have longer range due to them being Thunder based attacks. In addition, Pikachu has an Anti-Air down B.

Why is pikachu over Kirby?

watch any Isai video with Pikachu.

also, Pikachu's recovery is better than Kirby. Pikachu has invincibility frames in his recovery and has one of the best recoveries in any smash game.

I use Kirby....and I don't think that there is anything wrong or cheap about him.....you just have to know how to use him.....and know when to do down smashes and its basicly all about the timing.

Actually one of the biggest things about Kirby in smash64 is that his attacks require the LEAST timing because of their huge hit boxes and the amount of frames they stay active

spacing + shfair is the key to win.

seriously, you can avoid 50% of kirby Utilt setups by just doing that.

This only works for noob kirbys…people who know how to play Kirby will not only NOT spam Utilt randomly, but they will also know how to pivot with the tilt, making it a very hard thing to overcome…play Alpha_CL, ..if you don’t mind Delay to much..his Kirby got skills

I don't remember N64 controllers having a C stick. You are probably misunderstanding this thread.

You do realize 80% of the smash 64 community that post here plays online.

Meaning not many people play with a nintendo 64 controller, Most people use keyboard or PS3/PS2 or xbox360

few people use nin64 and gamecube (i use gamecube)

After picking up N64 I realize why Pikachu and Kirby are the best. It seems they both counter every character in the game, but when it comes to themselves, Pikachu counters Kirby. So it just seems fair to say Pikachu = 1 and Kirby = 2.

Kirby is not the second best character in the game *tierlist-wise* besides, Kirby gets worse and worse the further up the skill ladder you climb, being a god at the start and being "pretty good" at pro levels.

i dont agree. Kirby is dªmn good no matter the level. His utilt and dair are too good. Too easy to use also.

Huge priority and massive range on almost all of his hitboxes, too, as well as the fact that they linger for a while.

And multiple jumps that make edgeguarding a cinch. Pressure opponent off stage, opponent switches up recovery position to avoid kirby... kirby just goes to opponent and kicks them away with several jumps and and up+b still remaining :p
