Photo could allow someone into your house/car and give them access to your junk.

UC San Diego computer scientists have built computer software that allows the copy of keys without a physical key. You don't even need any skills in making keys. All you need is a photo of the key and your good to go, The picture can be taken from any angle and the software will still know how to cut the key. Calculating for angle size and relation of camera to key. The software finds what kind of cruves it will need to make to produce a copy.

The word you are looking for is 'steal.'

How do you steal a house anyway?

Would it really require a key?

^No

All you need is a picture of the key you want so for example I going to use you

lets say I wanted to get into your house. I'd wait until you were about to go in to your house at that time you would take out your keys. I would then take a picture with a digital camera you'd most likely have no idea of what I just did. I would then upload the picture to my computer and open it with sneakky the copying program. Then I would click a few key points on the key and finally the software would used those and the picture. To produce a key with a cutter. Now I would have a copy of your keys.

Okay, so you entered the house without my permission.

How do you steal a house with only a key?

^ I wouldn't exactly "steal" your house but I would have access into it and anything you put in it. You'd still own it but I could just walk in whenever I wanted. And I need a catchy thread name so that's why I choose "steal your house".

Seems like too much work. Kicking the door down would suffice for me.

And what about security alarms? I'm sure anybody that has anything worth stealing would have a security alarm.

SHOCK TOPIC WOOOOOWOOOOOOOOOWOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH

This is fascinating technology, I'll grant you that, but we're no more or less secure in our homes than we've ever been. Where there's a will to break in, there has never ceased being a way. If you're really craft, you'll just watch someone from afar (with some of them newfangled binocular units) enter their garage door code. Or club them to death and sneak in all Pink Panther style. CRAFTY.

Well I think this is definitely cool. Combined with a really good camera that could capture the key at high enough definition far away you could be pretty badass. Not that many people have security systems really, at least not many people I know do but they still have expensive electronics and jewelry. And with a key you can just walk into people's houses in broad daylight and unless they have vigilant neighbours you could just take whatever.

Which is why i cover up my keys. Pretty much don't release them until i'm at the door, unless i'm being chased. Now i got a good reason. Even though its in a enclosed area can never be too careful.

Even if a neighbor asked you on the way out what you were doing carrying a TV you could just say "Oh. I'm a friend. They borrowed this TV awhile back and told me to come pick it up today!"

That neighbor would notify the person just to be sure. The person would tell them that person was lying and would then get a description from the neighbor and the guy's plate number if he/she was smart enough to take note.

This is an interesting new technology. I don't think there's any cause to worry about your stuff getting stolen because of this, though. I don't think the government would allow this to be sold unless it's to somebody like a locksmith. I don't think there's any cause to worry.

And if somebody wanted to break into your house, they can already just pick the lock.

So are we just theorizing about how easy it would be to break into someone's house?

;)

I'll have you know I'm quite sociable and have made literally DOZENS of friends in alleys, ditches, vans, and other hip hangouts. I'm quite popular and am often the center of attention, the life of the party if you will, in all sorts of social and/or hostage situations.

Also re: neighbours taking down your license plate number, it would be some other guy's anyway. Cars have keys too.

Wow...

Is there really such a program that is capable of actually "stealing your house"? ;)

It's definetly interesting how technology's come so far, even for crooks.

The good thing, at least for now, is that this tech isn't in the hands of thieves, like SkylerOocon mentioned above. Even if it were, I doubt most would-be burglars have the know-how to put this kind of software to use anyway.
