Smash Hero
A passive effect is an effect in which the player is not required to do anything in particular for the effect to function. A well-known example is both Link and Toon Link's shield. By simply standing, both characters can block projectiles. This effect is rather absurd. [1][2] Hopefully that shield will break in the next game like those in Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild. Another passive effect known as "Tough Guy" by one tip provided in Super Smash Bros. Wii U for Bowser. Bowser won't flinch at early percents. Even Bowser Jr's Clown Car receives less damage compared to if Bowser Jr. is hit directly.
I thought perhaps every character should have one passive effect and these effects would be based on something from their series. Clone or semi-clone characters would probably end up with the same or similar passive effects, although this doesn't necessarily have to be the case. In fact, it's possible for different characters from different series' to share similar passive effects. "Passive" might not be entirely accurate, or it could just be that "passive" is something the player cannot cause by button inputs. Below is my list of characters with passive effects. Keep in mind that I only worked on characters I could come up with ideas for.
Feel free to provide your own concepts of passive effects.
: Attacks with less knock-back don't slow down Bowser. Low damage or crouching augments this, while attacking or crawling ignores this passive effect. Receiving more damage eventually nullifies this passive effect.
: The Clown Car reduces damage received by Bowser Jr., although hitting Bowser Jr. directly deals more damage.
: Once Captain Falcon takes off his opponent's first stock, he receives a slight boost in speed. This is based on the idea that after completing the first lap in F-Zero, the player receives the ability to use a boost.
: At times, Charizard will disobey the player, doing as he choose instead. I'm just kidding. A loose interpretation of the ability Blaze in Pokémon will work like Lucario's Aura. Except, only flame attacks will do more damage than usual when Charizard takes damage.
: Dark-based attacks have no effect against Ganondorf. Light-based attacks do, however, and deal greater damage.
: Link is protected by his shield when standing, crouching, or walking. Running, being in the air, or performing attacks makes this passive effect ineffective.
: Lucario's attacks grow in both damage and knock-back as it receives more damage.
: When Lucas receives 100% damage, Memento will take effect, reducing damage by 20%. This is a one-time effect per stock.
: When Luigi footstools, his opponent will end up in a longer tumbling animation.
: When Mario footstools, his opponent will take 2% damage.
: If Pikachu is hit by a direct attack, excluding disjointed attacks and projectiles, the opponent will receive 1% damage every time.
: If Pit loses all of his jumps, including Wings of Icarus, Angel's Feather will be activated, having the appearance of Wings of Icarus from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. This can only be used once per match.
: Most elemental attacks don't deal as much damage to Samus, including burning and freezing (varia suit), water (gravity suit), and darkness (dark and light suit).
: Same as Link, Toon Link's shield protects him as long as he stands or walks.
