What games would you say are overrated?
For me, it's the Last of Us. I need to rant, I think Last of us is boring, with mediocre gameplay and characters that have been done thousands of times before. I guess gamers don't watch movies and that's why every review I've read have said these "dynamic and enjoyable characters" are so original. Trust me, these sort of characters have been done before.
But I digress. The game is still playable, but not a 10/10 game.

What other games do you think are overrated?
OOT? FF7? ME2?

Personally I didn't experience any of the gameplay of TLoU, since I just watched an edited together 2 1/2 hour movie version of it on Youtube. Personally I was very satisfied with the story, and the characters seriously stuck out in my mind, it kept racing through my head for a decent amount of time. I wouldn't say these characters are original, but the execution and emotional conveyance of these characters is spot on, and I feel that's why they stand out so much.

As for overrated games, I recently bought Xcom: Enemy Unknown on-sale during Christmas, and when I finally got around to playing through it, I was somewhat unsatisfied with how the game was put together. For what's been marketed as a AAA title, the game lacks polish in many ways, which severely kills the immersion. The camera has absolutely no idea how to behave a majority of the time, with it whirling around the map on the Alien's turn. Also, whenever the brawler enemies would start charging towards you after you hit them, the game would instantly drop to nearly 5 FPS, which just seems to display it's bad programming front and center. I've also had the game softlock a handful of times due to reviving a soldier. I also felt the pacing of the game was a bit awkward; it was hard to tell how far along in the game I was. I didn't even realise I was at the end until I was about to start the final mission.

Overall I did look forward to getting to play the game again whenever I had to take a break, but I expected more from a title that received so much attention last year.

Any "A+" FPS. Ever. That includes all Halos, all Call of Duties, all Battlefields, Modern Warfare, whatever. 90-something percent of them feel the same, stale, and like it's just releasing the exact same game again and again and again. I could say Fire Emblem Awakening, but I don't feel confident enough in that to be able to say whether it's just my being unfamiliar with Fire Emblem and not adjusting to it yet, or whether that's actually the case.

I also find the Bioshock series a bit overrated, and I feel the same towards the Assassin's Creed games. I've always felt Super Metroid was a little overrated too, but I know it's still a good game.

War FPS' they are all literally the same. There's nothing interesting about them.

Skyrim is by far the most overrated game I've ever played. Literally the only fun thing to do in it is explore, but once that's over and you've covered the entire map it falls flat on its face.

What's the point of having so much to do in a game when it's all repetitive and stale as ****? And don't even get me started on the clunky combat, terribly balanced skill tree, and boring dialogue/story.

I really should avoid this kinda topic with a 20 foot pole, as in the end it comes down to opinions gone wild.

however, I do feel that Donkey Kong Country got a bit TOO much attention in the 90s, overshadowing more deserving games of that attention like Super Metroid and Sonic 3.

Also people who act like Majora is an underrated martyr kinda piss me off as well, as last I checked the game was successful cfritically AND commercially, so I fail to see the underrated part(you want an underrated Zelda? go see Minish Cap.)

Batman Arkham Origins was really quite overrated here in Norwich. The school nerds wouldn't shut up about it, and when I finally got it, it sucked (You can see my full hatred for this game over in my Batman Arkham Knight thread). It was just a rehash of City's story and it completely bastardised the Batman mythos. It was just boring. And that is one rule any form of media must never break.

I think OoT is pretty overrated. To me it offers nothing other than nostaligia and innovation for it's time. It wouldn't appeal to many people who didn't play it as a kid.

Mario World series and Mario Kart 64 are pretty overrated to me as well. To me the DK equivalents are better in every way and I think if they came first Donkey Kong would have been the face of Nintendo instead of Mario.

mario 64 lead into DK 64, so i'm not sure about that one, mario 64 was an entirely new concept that lead to the creation of those kind of games like DK64, the banjo-kazooie games, conker's bad fur day, etc. we can't tell if DK 64 was made first if it would've been as popular or whatever

i do agree though, DKR > mk 64

War FPSs and those interactive movies like The Walking Dead game and stuff like that. I only really see them as good for story, which I can get from a movie/show, and seem necessary.

That's my point, DKR is a more polished game than MK.

I wasn't talking about Mario64 and DK64, I was talking about the SNES games. The Country games are better than the Mario world games and I think would DK would be more iconic than Mario if the Country games preceded the World games.

Final Fantasy VII is the most overrated game in history. Is it a solid FF game? Definitely, but I hate that it gets so much recognition when compared to the rest of the series. Tbh I feel like the game was pretty dumbed down when compared to V and VI.

The Last of Us was an okay game, but also very overrated. I had plenty of non-gamer friends play it and drool over it and the reason I think this happened was because it was geared towards that audience. The story is more of what you would expect in a movie, which is why a more casual audience sucked it up. Personally, I thought GTAV was the best game of 2013 so I've had my fair share of debating the "greatness" of TLOU.

There's no way this thread could go downhill.

EDIT: But while I'm here, my nomination for the most overrated game of all time is the Nintendo 64.

I'm gonna be that guy and say it: Ocarina of Time is highly overrated. Yeah, it is a good game, but man, did people hype this up so much that I was disappointed when I first played and finished it a couple years ago.

And I am also going to be that guy and say that Dark Souls was also an overrated game. It is hard, big whoop. It is also pretty boring for an action RPG as well. Shield up, and fish for that back stab. Large bosses, move around, wait for it to stop attacking, and then hit one or two times. Rinse and repeat.

OoT was only amazing game for people who played it at the time. It would be a very dated game for people nowadays who are being introduced to it for the first time. OoT fanboys cling to the innovation in the game, which means nothing to people playing it for the first time today. It does have a timeless soundtrack though.

This is actually one of my biggest pet peeves. IMO, talking about how something was impressive and innovative back in its initial release is NOT a good argument for why a game should be considered a "classic."

IMO, nearly every "classic" game from the N64/PS1/SAT era is pretty overrated. Given how devs were just figuring out how to make 3D work almost nothing from that era aged well.

It depends really. You could call it a classic because it was good for its time. However I wouldn't call it a good game because it's dated and has been surpassed by more recent games of the same genre. I think MM has aged better because it offers something more unique that you can't outdo simply with better graphics.

Honestly what makes me like OoT so much than modern time Zelda's is the progression and pacing compared to other 3D Zeldas. And unfortunately OoT's flaws were carried over to future 3D entries, imo, since they basically copied the formula too closely (and added other flaws). Majora's Mask ironically copied so much yet stands out with its new ideas which is great.

Overrated games to me were the Sonic Adventures, Twilight Princess, and DK64.

I'm not a fan of OoT. I didn't play it until I got my hands on the Gamecube Collectors Edition, I found it pretty underwhelming after all the praise I saw it get. The dungeons are mostly forgettable imo, especially the first three, I think the environment is bland, the combat is awful, time travel was very poorly used, and I think it's soundtrack is far from one of the better Zelda OSTs.

That said, I wouldn't call it overrated. It's a pretty solid game overall and does deserve some praise, I just think it's one of the weakest Zelda games personally. :/

SA1 and 2 are staples of my childhood. That being said, SA1 hasn't aged well. At all. Ever. SA2 has aged much better IMO but the later half of the game is much weaker than the first (especially Knuckles/Rouge's stages).

I wouldn't say Twilight Princess is overrated. In fact, I think I'd say its underrated due to how a good (and rather vocal) chuck of the Zelda fanbase has decided that its the worst thing since the CD-I games. Something about the over world being empty, or something like that. Despite the fact that there wasn't much to OoT's over world either.

Actually, the Zelda games haven't had a lively over world since Link to the Past (and Link Between Worlds, which was made to emulate LttP as much as possible).

EDIT: MM had a pretty good overworld too if I recall. Granted, I haven't picked up MM since I was around thirteen or so, so my memory might be off.

I think Water, Shadow, and Spirit temple were my favorite since they offered the most variety for me. Other than that, the puzzles were rather simple. I guess Forest was fun just for the difficulty spike after becoming Adult Link.

Out of WW, TP, and SS, I usually hear TP getting the most praise. WW is getting praise again, but I think it's to the same effect as Majora's Mask where people give it a chance over time. Overworld being empty is one of the flaws from OoT that pretty much carries over in every 3D Zelda for me. While TP's one of my least favorite Zelda's, I'd say it had some of the better dungeons of the 3D ones.

What bogs it down for me are the graphics, art style, slow beginning/pacing, item usage after dungeons, and wolf portions.

Definitely not a bad game, but not one I'm eager to go back to. I'm more of a 2D Zelda fan though.

The Forest and Spirit Temple is pretty cool. The rest of Adult Link's dungeons are not bad, but they don't do much for me. I really dislike Young Link's dungeons though, I find them so boring that they make for the worst first half of any Zelda game imo.

It also doesn't help that the combat feels wrong to me in OoT. Whatever it is about it makes me want to avoid every fight just like in a 2D Zelda, which is unfortunate.

I feel like I never see TP getting much praise, but I guess I only ever see the vocal minority. :/
I do personally think of it as a better game than OoT though. It has without a doubt some of the best dungeons in any Zelda game. While I agree that the graphics and art style are not great, I feel the game makes up for it when it comes to the design of everything, especially the dungeons, I think all of them are interesting visually.

The slow beginning is really unfortunate, those early game wolf sections really drag. I actually like the wolf though, sure it doesn't add much overall, but it does give us the best way to move fast in any Zelda game, that alone is enough of a justification for it's existence.

I also agree that the item usage after dungeons is really bad. Though at least we are still able to use them(OoT boomerang why?), nor are they a bunch of upgrades to items you already have. It's still bad design.

I like TP's overworld. Yeah, it's pretty empty, but I also like SotC's overworld. I guess I'm a sucker for massive overworlds.

It is certainly a flawed game, and it's not my favorite Zelda or anything, but I would return to it much sooner than I would OoT.

I'm also more of a 3D Zelda fan.

For me, I always heard TP getting too much praise for what it was. I don't know why people disliked the art style, since I always thought it was awesome. The gameplay was really fun, and I enjoyed going through the dungeons. However, yeah, that item usage made the magic of getting a new item very null. (Damn you spinner!)

As for OoT, it was okay, and I had fun with it, but the game had some awkward pacing.

I want to say I really like TP, but the truth is I've only ever been able to bring myself to finish it once. I've tried playing through it again twice, but I always end up losing interest after reaching Arbiter's Grounds.

IMO TP's biggest weakness is that it tries too damn hard to emulate OOT with its art style, dungeon design and over all structure while simultaneously trying to break away and be its own thing. I have to agree with Minato on the wolf segments. For me, they tended to just drag on and didn't really add anything to the game. I actually really didn't mind the large over world, since Midna let you fast travel to wherever you wanted to go.

The game's biggest crime, though, was limiting you to equipping only two items at a time on the GCN version. Midna did NOT need to occupy my Z button, she could have easily been bound to the d-pad.

But in all seriousness I think the series is fine where it's at, I just hate it when other fans still think and talk about how it's "an underrated Gem" when it's mark on the internet shows it's clearly not...

Given that Ness has been in every Smash Bros game and Earthbound is all over the internet I don't even think it can count as obscure anymore.

Alright, I'll say it. Half Life series. I don't at all understand the hype around it, I played it and it was just... average. I've certainly played better, but it's ranked among some of the best games in the world.
