Online Ranking system in Brawl?

I think its been made pretty clear with today's update that the online mode has been quite well thought out and looks like it will be quite good. However I think its really going to need some level of achievement or a ranking system. At the very least I think they should definately include a win / loss ratio or record. Either of these would be useful to gauge opponents aswell as creating something to play towards. Does anyone else feel that Brawl will need something along the lines of an achievement or rank system?

The fake OC, because I'm nothing like them.
As far as Wi-Fi play is concerned, Sakurai stated his plan was to include Wi-Fi connection compatibility and online functionality, he goes on to say "one of the primary reasons Super Smash Bros. Brawl was created was that Nintendo, when taking Wii online, wanted to have Smash Bros. to do that".
However, as stated in the Toukouken on the Japanese version of the Smash Bros. website, "there would be many hurdles to cross," and an online ranking system is unlikely to be implemented

That doesn't mean it won't be in, but the chances are slim and some users here have told me that Sakurai already confirmed no battle records for "With Anyone", but has yet to say anything about "With Friends".

well it is possible... the most prominate concern of ranking was if you are losing you disconnect so your rank would not suffer, but now a cpu will take over so you can still play. I think they should make a rule where if you disconnect in game you will lose "rank".

In an interview with IGN, Sakurai said the Wii's motion sensing features might not be included because, "we found that trying to implement too much motion-sensory functionality can get in the way of the game."

But we still got some. So we'll see. If there is a "ranking system" it should be how many matches you have won, and put that with all of your other versus matches data.

Usually games like this would have ranking and a game this big certainly needs something like this. Just as they should implement leaderboards for Homerun Contest, why not ranking?

Well, I think there might be some ranking of some sort. This won't be public, it'd be really invisible, but I'm thinking that you would need some sort of ranking so that you'd be replaced by an accurate-level computer when you die. If anyone who knows what they are doing drops out and are replaced by a level 5... you'd know something is going on. However, when if a newbie finds himself pitted against a level 9 (they were scary when I first got the game)... that wouldn't work well either. I'm thinking some sort of underlying ranking would need to happen.

That said, there's no way to know if this would be by a win/loss percentage, or something more like a hit percentage or damage/minute ratio or combo count or something along those lines. But it will UNDOUBTEDLY not be visible to players.

It's not important....noobs just wanna see where they stand or who they could beat. Go to tourneys man!

why do they gotta be noobs just because you don't like it? a ranking system would be a great thing for this game.

I know a leader board would be a nice feature that way everyone can go for the same goal, being number 1. Though its not there sadly. Though playing the game is meant for fun.

If brawl doesnt get an online ranking system the game has no chances of getting a perfect score in my books. An online ranking system is what makes going online even funner.

But online ranking systems that nintendo makes are so garbage and influence people to disconnect. Disconnectors should get 1 negative win... let me explain a good system

1. Only wins are tallied. (Losses are something that no one wants, people always disconnect to keep a good record.

2. Winner gets 2 points, 2nd place gets 1.5, 3rd place gets 1.25 and 4th place gets 1 point. (This is one of the best systems i can think of, because if someone disconnects they wont get any points at all and will actually miss out on points.

Either way, I don't think internet play will replace actual human contact for a while, and I am a forward thinker...

But, I would like one that at least shows a general idea of how good you are, If you have a good record you get paired with others like you ect...

I find it weird that the Check Mii Out Channel has rankings, but freaking SMASH BROS. doesn't. Seriously, they should've made the online ranking more like Xbox Live's. (Not being an Xbox fanboy, just saying that its online is better, even if it does cost money)

I don't think they would do that but I would love to see that implemented into the game. Expert players with very low loss records, could track down other expert players and battle them. I'm sure they would enjoy having this option. Ranking wouldn't be only to see who the best "brawler" is, but also to fight people who are more towards your own skill level.

Xbox has a good system. They make their customers pay to play online. So they have to have a good online system to play. PS3 and Nintendo doesnt, and they dont care if they're successful in online play as much as xbox. xbox knows when people play online the players subject themselves to a specific of a game like 1 or 2, maybe a few more, and play those game for years, like the halo franchise. they will continue to make money because people will pay to play online thus still making money off of halo. something like brawl you will just make money on the sell. and you know basically everyone here just plays brawl only and maybe a few other game. but we will continue to play brawl for years. so nintendo really dont care how online plays goes as much as xbox.

Are you sure about that?

Considering the nature of the Smash series, a win/loss records would not tell the whole story of that player, namely how those wins and losses were achieved. With the luck and random stuff that occurs, one needs tell if a player gots those wins by skill or by chance.

To be honest... what's better than a win/loss record is simply a ladder.

Records incourage disconnectors and don't usually show a full story.

Warcraft 3 (IMO) has the perfect online ranking system.

It isn't so much about your wins/losses as it is about gaining EXP. You get exp by winning, the win/loss difference depending on who you play against.

Only the top 1000 players get onto the ladder and once that happens it gets highly competitive.

I'm actually against win/loss records because they don't tell you how good a person is. Its not so much that people are afraid of losses as much as they don't want to see someone else get a win.

Obviously this is solved by giving a win to someone when everyone else disconnects. Nintendo has been too stupid to impliment this in games so far (unless its in some of their newer Wi-Fi games). Typically they make it so that the loser gets a loss and the winner gets nothing.

People don't operate that way. If they are losing they want the other player to "not win" more than they care about getting a loss on their record.
