as we all know , the super smash bros games have always had good multiplayer and 1player gameplay. With brawl, we will most likely be able to play online against other opponents. I have read lots of threads about people dying for online play, while others think it could be underwelming. So i ask you, will brawl online be awesome, or will it end up falling short of our expectations? explain why you think so.

It will be AWESOME. Being able to practice with pretty much anyone around the world will be great. You can even set up training sessions and practice with your crew or other players online. I can't wait!

you know im sure it will be awesome too, but with stuff like friend codes, im still a little skeptical. Of course, i highly doubt nintendo would screw up one of its biggest franchises, so im hoping for the best

I have to admit, the friends codes have me worried also....but can't you play online against anyone on Mario Strikers? I haven't tested out online play, but from what I've heard it sounds like you don't need friends codes. I hope this is the same for Brawl.

hmmmm... not sure bout strikers. never played it either. But i think that nintendo should ditch friendcodes for usernames, if only for brawl

on strikers it searches for an opponent, though it doesnt say who it is until you've accepted, it only shows their connection quality

I believe there'll be good online play. This game's probably going to be region-locked like Mario Strikers Charged. In other words, you won't be able to go up against everyone in the entire world.

uberpwnage43, you seem to not like the SEARCH FUNCTION. I see you making alot of threads that have already been discussed.

But anyways, this is what I want online to be like. I know, it may be farfetched, but:
No friend codes, but you can have a friend list to add people too.
Servers.
Usernames. And a username search.
A character search - if you want to play against a certain character.
Rankings.
Custom matches. Items, stages, stock, time, etc.

Shall I go on?

In a perfect world, online would be awesome. Once advanced techniques are developed, it would become a place for people who play to win and want to sharpen their skills against others. But it will never work out like that because of lag. Even on a good dedicated gaming server, you can usually expect 10-30ms of lag simply because your personal internets have some limitations. That's plenty of time to throw off a L-cancel. I know Brawl isn't Melee, but unless they have managed to debug the game PERFECTLY, we will develop advanced tactics requiring precise timing.

Yeh, alot of people don't like the clutter of repeat threads.
No offence though, but you have to search if the topic you're going to post isn't all that original. And if you can't find it through search, and it's not on the first 5 pages...then maybe you should make a new thread.

But for now, my dream online play would be what I stated in my last post. It seems unreal, but it would be amazing.

Well unless you are playing for winning you wont notice a diffrence. But for most of us it will affect our gameplay but i imagine that our hands will gradually get use to the little amount of lag and we will adapt to this. If it runs anywhere as smooth as Mario Strikes Charged il be alright because i rarely had lag. I either had lots of it or i had none at all. Ofcourse brawl is more complex than strikers but i believe that people after playing brawl will just foreget all about this... or not.:urg:

I hope is awesome and not overwhelming. If the headset comes out, who could it will be beating the crap out of your friend while talking online.

It will be cool. But because of the normal online fighting game issues, it isn't going to be as good as going to tournaments and playing people in person.

I don't really care much about the online. I have plenty of friends and potential smashers in my local area. and I don't mind traveling to play with fellow smashers.

online if there is one will probably be pretty good, i doubt a headset will come out but other than i that it will probabl prefor like strikers but hopefully have more game mode options/ a lobby(something like madden 08) customizable settings too would be great to, if lag is minimal like in strikers then we have ourselves a worthy online mode

When I play the original SSB online with Kaillera, there is almost no lag, and I can Z-cancel quite well (I think so, anyway; I have some trouble, but I think it's just because I use a keyboard and have not been playing the original for very long). When there IS lag, everything just stops as opposed to people jerking around the screen and throwing your timing off on advanced techniques, which is really fine by me.

I'm not expecting online to have much in the way of options, however I hope (wishful thinking) the amout and detail of online features will come as a surprise. Who knows, maybe the reason why Nintendo has been so quite about online for brawl is that they're planning to impress us with what we'll be able to do. I can only hope.

I do think that online play will be amazing, nintendo's been very good with that so far on the wii. Still, is it just me, or does it feel like brawl's online play may kind of destroy the tournament atmosphere. If you can play with people over the world via internet, what need is there to be going out of your living room? But there are the awsome people who will still go out. Or am I just over thinming everything. Still even with that in mind, I do believe the online segment of this game will be unbelievable.

Any online is good online. While I expect it will be as lame and confining as all nintendo's online games it will still be fun to have some kind of online. I hope they at least give us some control over match setting. Items/not items, stock/time etc. I hope they don't do what they did with prime hunters and only have one battle setting for random battles.

I don't care for online play either way...

I never play any game online and the few times I tried, I ran into a bunch of *******es.

I only play with friends anyway, and none of them play online.

...So it doesn't matter to me

I think it's pretty stupid that you have no idea who you're playing against in random matches. I could beat Ken and never even know it. Now, I guess after so many games online, I'll just have to assume I've beaten him.

As I expected, playing with people on your friend list is a lot better than playing against random people. I like playing random matches better though, because you always have an opponent. In Mario Strikers it seems like my friends are never on, and when they are they're busy. So I usually just ignore them and play random matches, because I know I'll always get a game.

I hope you can have stock matches against random people, but I doubt it. The rules will probably be automatically set to default, which would mean every match would be a 2 minute time match.

I hope they let you pick how many opponents you want to be matched up against. That what suck if it automatically matched you up with 3 other people every time, like in Mario Kart DS. In Mario Kart it wasn't that big of a deal, since more people is always better. But in Smash Bros., sometimes you want to play one on one.

Well, it does say:
"With friends, you can brawl any way you like. And there are other modes besides just free-for-alls."

So I really HOPE this means you can choose between time/stock and turn items on/off, otherwise that means I can't actually Brawl "any way I like"

One thing that I REALLY want though, is the ability to have at least 2 players online on a single wii. (i.e. you and a friend do 2v2s against people online.)

Well, it's OBVIOUS that playing with friends will let you change options and stuff, but that's how Nintendo has been doing it for the LONGEST TIME.

I want to be able to choose the rules in a RANDOM Match, which, it doesn't look like it'll happen for this game either.
