Olimar's jump canceled reverse upsmash

I was going to post this in RichBrown's thread, but considering this is a NEW AT for Olimar, I thought it deserved an entirely different thread. Kudos to Rich for inspiring everyone to brainstorm. <3

It's called a jump canceled reverse upsmash.

And no, I don't have a video of it... Soooorry.

How to do it:
  1. Run one direction
  2. Press back
  3. Hold back
  4. Jump
  5. C-stick up (+Z to charge a smash)/ or you can press up and A, but it's harder.

You have to do it all in one quick motion. I'm not exactly sure when you're supposed to hold back. It might be directly after you jump, or it may not matter. I can't remember, but my fingers do...

The effect:
You do a running upsmash, but the upsmash is done in the opposite direction. You maintain your momentum through the entire thing, so it's just like a regular one, but you're backwards.

Application:
Um... I thought of a couple of different situational uses.

Ok, so you know how yellow upsmashes get an extended horizontal hitbox on them? (They get an airbox that extends to about a dsmash's length away from Olimar- farther than the other pikmin's upsmash)

So, if you use this with a yellow upsmash, you get that big hitbox behind you.

Situational airchasing:
Airchasing b-reversers (Dabuz told me this one)
You can chase and hit characters like Snake that b-reverse things. The hitbox on a yellow upsmash will extend up and behind Oli quite a bit. You see him b-reverse while you're dashing at him and you reverse your upsmash in one quick motion.

Tech chasing characters that have fallen on platforms.
Imagine this. You hit your opponent onto the middle part of a platform with dtilt. They sneeze or something and miss the tech, lol. You run up to them, charge a reverse upsmash, they roll towards the direction you came thinking they'll dodge it, when WHAM. You hit them with the reversed one.

Upsmash Mindgames!
Yes, I said mindgames. Imagine running towards your opponent that's next to the ledge. There's tons of people that will still roll towards you so you run, charge a reversed upsmash, getting the end of your hitbox to reach the end of your opponent's roll, and then they roll into it thinking they wouldn't get hit because upsmash doesn't have that much range in the back.

More Mindgamez.
Run past your opponent, reverse upsmash. Blammo. You just hit your opponent with the front side of your upsmash after running past him. They can't shield grab that stuff either. They'll be like... "What??? Did that just happen?"

Even more trickery.
Run away from your opponent when they're right next to you, charge a reversed upsmash, and wait till they get near. Unleash it and see what happens. If they're someone that can't shieldgrab it like Sonic or IC, you've got yourself a pretty flashy looking move.

This is all I've really thought of thus far. So maaaaaybe some of this is kinda dumb/useless/not very plausible, but I'm just trying to get your heads churnin! :)

Real problem: there's only a big difference in the hitbox if you have a yellow. Also, you might have to hold your controller weird to do it. You can do it without the c-stick, but it's easier.

I wrote this really quickly. I just wanted to go ahead and get this post out there. I'll edit it later/tomorrow for clarity/neatness.

I kinda have to claw with my right hand to get this to work. Timing's not too hard though.

It definitely helps with airchasing and giving us more options to mindgame with.

Makes me glad I turned my R button into a jump button when I was learning not to roll so much <3

It's easy to do, too. I've been doing it for about two minutes and I'm already consistent (which is rare since I never pick anything up that fast  )

I never knew the hitbox was different depending on which way you faced XD

Good stuff Dan! Glad I could inspire you :p I'll work on this later. I will have to claw it though, since my tap jump is turned off...

Wow, I actually didn't know that the hitbox was different depending on what direction you're facing. <_<;

I always thought this was useless for Olimar, but I'm definitely going to start using this more, considering it's ridiculously easy to pull off.

Also, you guys don't need to claw. Just do the following:

1. run
2. pivot
3. Y
4. ^ + L set to attack

No claw needed.

Tap jump off doesn't hurt Olimar. >_>; You can still up smash OOS, up special OOS and pivot up smash easily with tap jump off, you just need different controls.

I have L set to attack for DACUS and OOS w/ tap jump off, and X set to special for OOS, too.

Well, you guys have to remember that it's only the yellow upsmash that has a big change in its hitbox when Olimar turns around. I recommend going into training mode to test the hitboxes out for yourself.

Oh, I just read the first post.

Since when is this a new AT for Olimar? I've known of it since Falcos started utilizing it, and I've used it quite a few times.

New AT??

Well, it's a new AT for us to consider for Olimar's metagame. It's not a new AT per se, but we've never looked into its uses for Olimar. (As far as I know. I've been in the Oli boards for only a couple of months now.)

I've looked into it quite a bit, I just never noticed the yellow hitbox. I just think it's a little annoying how people are calling this "new". >_>'

This thread is simply a place to talk about its uses for Olimar.

Considering most of you guys either haven't ever heard of this or put any thought into its uses, I called it "new" in the OP. Is that so wrong?

i actually find this extremely useful, because the hitbox in front of oli's upsmash is farther than behind for all pikmin (cept white, and yellow is most noticable, purple is as well) so its a good way to space people like MK who can easily avoid a pivot grab, we can instead do this and often trade hits if not upsmash through his dair or W/E

I think putting a video up for this would be as useful as a video that explains breathing.

You just jump then up smash during a pivot. It's nothing complicated.
