Don't sweat the small stuff, just tell her. If you have to just ask "hey can I talk to you privately for a minute?" while you're with your friends. It's only as awkward as you make it. If you're comfortable and confident she'll feel at ease and it won't be weird.

Trombone...it's the only instrument I play and I play it well. :p I've been doing so for 10 years now. This is my 6th year in marching band.

And yeah...I thought about this further today, and I think pulling her aside would be the best option...considering we're almost always in a group together.

Just pull her aside, really.
That last time, when she asked your friend to take her home...

You should've grabbed her arm and said: "Wait a second, I'd like to tell you a few words." Or something. If you can, get a few friendly dates with her, 1 on 1. That could reveal a lot, really.

Trombone...it's the only instrument I play and I play it well. :p I've been doing so for 10 years now. This is my 6th year in marching band.

And yeah...I thought about this further today, and I think pulling her aside would be the best option...considering we're almost always in a group together.
OMG I play the trombone too except i play it moderately and only for 3 years. Wahts the note above the high B and what position? Okay back on topic... yeah pretty much follow altairian's advice.
