Hey, what’s up guys?
It’s fairly rare these days for me to make a thread, as I tend to just leave that to everyone else, but what the hell. Why not? Also, sorry if any of this is confusing, I wrote much of it in train-of-thought.
Also, I just relised how LONG this thread is. Just go down to the bottom of this post to check the questions, and ignore the filler, if you want.

This is really just an article I’ve written, with a few questions for you guys in it also.
So, without further ado, let me welcome you to:

==Blackadder’s totally whack and awesome and stuff thread== (AKA "Offensive/Deep/Mature gaming verses Kiddy/Simple/Innocent games...which do you play?")

My gaming past:

I’m assuming that many of you lot were raised in the rise of video games. The good ol’ days. You know-when the gaming greats of today were just surfacing into action (Mario and Sonic were at each others throats, FTW) Snake was but a 2D Side scroller, Yoshi’s Island was the bomb of Platform, Mortal Kombat was as brutal and Bloody as it got (Unless you were smacking people only to have them lose “Sweat”), the sounds and tunes were a mix of bleeps, bloops, and pops. And yet I’m sure it’s were many of you started. Hell, some of you may remember Pac-man as your great, though that may be stretching it. We had the good stuff. For any of you that played games with reading involved, you may remember such brilliant lines as “A winner is you!” or “I am Error”.

I, like many of you, started my gaming experience at a very early age. My older Brothers had a SEGA Mega-Drive, and I recall sitting around, watching them play sometimes. One memory I have is of what must have been Sonic the Hedgehogs first outing, in which my brother made him “Roll” through a wall and smash through it in pixilated awesomeness. My mind says this is when my mind said “I want to do that!”.
In another memory, I can see Tazzy Devil being run over by a madman in a car. I think the game was called “Taz-Mania” or similar. My last true short memory is what MAY have been Mortal Kombat 1, watching my brother beat the living shit out of a Ninja in red. (And not because he was initially dressed in Crimson!)

It’s those recollections that make retro gaming such a joy for me. The feelings just rush in…it’s just freakin’ beautiful.
*Wipes tears away*
My first game that I played? I could never say, though top contenders are “Alex Kidd”, Sonic, or maybe even “Road Rash II”. Forgotten classics, to be sure. At least in my world.

Many of you have similar reminiscences, I’m sure. Similar memories, events, and thoughts, with any luck. But aside from Mortal Kombat, much of what much of you played was relatively innocent…right?

And we be here now!

And now it’s 2007, nearly 08 now.
Those days are now a decade old, even 15 years gone. Things are different, games have evolved. Some people now consider the medium an art form on the same level and caliber as a great novel, or a movie. Our once growing and cute pastime is now serious business, and as such, has changed its style a faire bit over time. No longer will characters say “The trucks have moving!”, or will the gore be changed into sweat. Swearing is commonplace among games, and controversial elements are no stranger to gaming.

A lot of us have just gone along with this, now playing a healthy mix of the new Sonic games (Actually…maybe that was a bad example) and God Of War “adult” games.

But I’ve noticed something over the years. I’ve been slowly decreasing my intake of kiddy games, simpler games, or the older stuff I grew up on. Mario games no longer make me jump out of my seat and rush to the store, (Mario Galaxy hardly has me excited) while games such as (Possibly my new found love of the month) like Resident Evil 4 have me totally captivated, and eagerly awaiting Res 5. Of course, there are exceptions, as I am a Nintendo/Sega loyalist, with my buying things such as “Sonic Rush” and “New Super Mario Brothers”. While I was looking forward to playing these games, once passing them, I wound up playing GTA San Andreas for its storyline and violent fun again.

For instance, I bought Poke’mon Diamond. Of course I did. It’s Poke’mon, and Yellow and Gold will forever hold a high place in my heart as classics. (While both games received AMAZING reviews, I still say they’re underrated, dangit!) But I noticed I spent…I think its 14 hours on the game? Then I stopped. The end. Whatever. I beat the League. And got enough Poke’mon for me to be happy. I then went of and Played Metroid Prime for some Shoot ‘em Up fun. For a fair while to, might I add.

Compare this to my 400+ hours on Poke’ Gold, caught ALL Poke’mon (Save for Mew and Celebi…my God I wanted them) and beat the League a bazillion times over, each time loving it, I feel sad.

Partly because I spent so much time looking at a little man walk around semi-aimlessly for so long, but mainly because I loved that experience, and Diamond just couldn’t bring that to me. Yet Resident Evil or GTA can and does. (Granted, Diamond isn’t the strongest installment to the series, but still…)

And so this new found love for violent/story driven/mature games grows stronger for me still, while the latest Kirby game goes unnoticed by me. Hell, I’m only mildly interested in “Sonic RPG” simply because I say the word “RPG” in it!

I still play some of the game styles I would have once considered freakin’ king, but this is becoming rarer and rarer as my age grows. Soldier of Fortune > Spyro anytime for me now.

All this said, Kirby’s Dream Land still holds the title of “best game ever” for me, and Poke’ Yellow is still an epic adventure, and Sonic 2 still gets me hyped, but I leave myself to wonder:

Will I care in another 5 years?
At 20, will I buy “Poke’mon Vomit couler” or “Wario Ware 28561”?
Or will these games just be ignored, or just purchased for my Nephew to play?
Will the next title in the “Super Killer Blood Death Man” series be my attraction, or “Metal Gear Solid: A New Hope” be the centre of my attention and focus?

I have to say, I think I’ll only be buying the bigger titles in these kind of genres. Poke’mon will still very likely be gotten by me, as will any Mario game that looks interesting enough. But for the most part…I think my collection is going to slowly change from “G-grate 4 allz!” to “MA- Keep out of reach of impressionable kids”.
The woe.

Of cause, some people think game should have stayed cute and simple.

===================================

So yeah, what do you guys think? Do you still play simple, cute, and neat games, or do you to now favour a good Intense Action game in its place? Or do you have a mix?

My main question though, is do you guys think you’ll be getting the new Poke’mon games in 10 years, along with the new Mario and Sonic games? Or will these really be totally replaced by a more “mature” collection?

Also, just out of interest, if any of you guys wanna post up your "Gaming Past" I'd love to read 'em.

Also, I assume this thread will close in about 7 more seconds.
Thanks Cashed.

I like them both. My favourite games include "kiddy" games such as Pokemon (I have Yellow, Silver and Crystal - and a Mew), Harvest Moon, Zelda and Super Smash Bros, of course, but there are also "mature" games that I like as well, like Civilization IV, Oblivion and Half-life 2. I can't really choose which group I like the best. On the other hand, there are clearly more games in mature section that I don't like. I dislike most of the racing games and simulators. But, there are a lot of platform jumping games that are plain boring too.

I play both those type of games. I used to only played kiddy and fantasy games like Mario, Zelda, and Final Fantasy. Now I play the Metal Gear Solid Franchise and Resident Evil 4. As you grow older, your gaming tastes change a little. For example, I used to play Pokemon when generation 2 was hot (mainly on Gold and Silver) and had the 400+ gameplay hours to prove it. i used to do multiple runs with different Pokemon frequently. Nowadays, I don't play Pokemon anymore since Generation 3 failed me( especially the spinoffs like Mystery Dungeon) and I don't plan on buying Diamond and Pearl.
Will I get the new Mario games in 10 years? Yes. The new Sonic games? Only if they improve. The new Pokemon games? NO.

Buyt, really, I am finding it harder and harder to not play a game with some sense of realism. I really can't play games where you save princesses anymore because death is so lightly discussed. It just don't do it for me anymore.

I play a mix, though I'm finding that it's harder and harder for me to get excited about a single-player game. Online gaming has spoiled me. Having a job, I don't have as much time to game as I used to, so having interaction with others (which is why MMOs do so well, IMO, since their gameplay is a decade+ old) is a big selling point, though solo games have their place. I haven't been impressed with recent Nintendo offerings (both recent Zeldas were too easy and dumbed down) which is normally the forerunner for simple, innocent fun. Hopefully Galaxy will deliver.

By the same merit, it's hard to care about all the "totally realistic!!!one" games out there. They all blend together. I'm pretty much sick of alternate futures (in the near future, all new sophisticated weaponry... including shotguns, machine guns, and rocket launchers!) like games set in year 20XX (other than Mega Man). Want me to care? Make a completely new world/universe. Not earth, slightly modified.

I still love everything. I don't need realism, I just need fun.

For example: I played Viva Pinata for over 50 hours. That game was so freaking addictive, but because it was a purely single player experience, after I did everything, I stopped playing. When I go back now I can play for about 15 minutes before becoming bored. Then you've got Halo 3, which I played through all of single player by myself and then hopped online and did everything with my friends. Hell, I've played through the campaign more than 5 times because it was good this time around and there's the four player online co-op.

Knowing things like this when I'm purchasing new games really does make me think "Do I REALLY need to buy this?" Like Super Mario Galaxy. I know it's going to be great. It's getting awesome reviews. I love Mario games, but I can't help but feel jipped now a days when I don't get online play of some sort. I am going to buy it, but it's not high on my priority list as I know it won't have a completely awesome story but instead will likely just make me love Mario again for a month or two. What's high on my priority list? Rock Band and Mass Effect. Rock Band is going to have a great single player experience, and an even better co-op experience with friends. There's also going to be fresh content coming into the game weekly so I don't get sick of the songs. And Mass Effect, that game is going to take me a **** long time to beat and should have a really good story.

So what I'm trying to say is I usually buy my games based off their play value. Replay value is great, and if it doesn't have any multiplayer, it better have a **** good single player. I don't care about the whole realistic/nonrealistic thing.

I don't really care. I mean, I jsut play the games that are fun. I mean, right now I'm primarily playing games that would be consider "innocent", but I plan on getting Bioshock, GoW and MOH: Airborne as soon as I get my computer some more RAM and a brand-spanking new DX10 graphics card.

I am the same! This is why I mainly play fighting games!

I enjoy other kinds of multiplayer games as well...

Thing is, the adult/kiddie image should only matter to kids, because they shouldn't play adult games if they aren't mature enough. Other than that, just look a GOOD game instead of worrying about extra characteristics.

I'm currently playing Metal Gear Solid 2 and I'm going to pick up Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker this week. I love MGS because it has an enthralling story and FUN gameplay, not because its rated M. DQM is a deep and FUN game. I don't play games because they're kiddy/mature/offensive. If the game is good, there's no reason why I won't play it.

I play both sure, but definitely the majority of the games are kiddie cause I'm old school. Most mature games I play are actually good games and it's not the maturity that attracts me to them.

It really doesn't matter to me what audience the game is meant for, as long as its an entertaining experience. I've ranged from games such as Cake Mania (DS), Animal Crossing (DS), and Cooking Mama (DS/Wii) to titles such as Manhunt 2 (Wii), The Punisher (PS2/XB), and Condemned (X360) as far as ratings go (E to M). As long as its fun, holds my attention, and is worth the buy, I'll play it.

On the subject however, its my opinion that the surrounding media cares about mature rated games more than gamers or parents of gamers do. Our media sources are too busy trying to censor, water-down, or downright cancel mature games altogether that they fail to realize that 99% of gamers just don't care. Young gamer's parents may, but it's a simple matter of refusing to let their children play certain games or certain rated games. Working in a GameCrazy, I see it all the time. Between these children's parent's censoring what their kids play and us behind the counter refusing to sell M rated games to anyone under 17, we really don't need anything more.

I've a tricky problem. I'm going to buy a couple of games before Christmas holidays, but I've difficulties to decide what to buy. There are promising games coming on 360, like Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect. On the other hand my game collection for Wii is too small. I'd like to play Super Paper Mario. Super Mario Galaxy is surely a great game as well. But there's Bioshock for Xbox too...

This is my own personal preference, but I'd suggest the following: Rent Bioshock and Super Paper Mario. They're both definitely worth playing, but they aren't worth shelling out $50/$60 to own them, as both have very little replay value. I work in a game store and I've found one thing out this year, all the greatest titles that've come out have been painfully short. Halo 3, Bioshock, Heavenly Sword, Clive Barker's Jericho, The Darkness, etc.

Assassin's Creed looks beautiful, and I'll definitely be playing it as soon as I can, but there's certainly reason to be cautious, which is why I took my preorder off. I'll be renting it before I move in for the buy, as all gamers should, just to make sure it's worth spending $60 to keep it. Mass Effect, for me anyway, has very little appeal. I loved KotoR I & II, but again, due to other games disappointing me this year, I'll be trying it before I'm buying it.

I, like pretty much everybody else in this thread, it seems, don't really care whether the game I'm playing is "kiddy" or not. I'm more interested in whether it's good, and how much enjoyment I'll get out of it.

I'll play anything as long as I think I'll have a good time playing it, and I certainly won't play a game just because it has guns or gratuitous sex.

Huh?

If you liked the KotOR, why the heck would Mass Effect not appeal to you? It seems like the same basic formula, with a number of improvements.

I judge games based on how fun they are, not the violence or the language involved. Hell, if I thought Pokemon Vomit was better than Melee/Brawl, guess who'd be playing Vomit on the 10th?

I really could care less of the rating. If it's good, I like it. If it sucks, I don't.

I mainly pick up more mature games now. Mario doesn't excite me [I don't care for SMG or Super paper Mario], Pokemon disgusts me [congratulations on having a decade old battle system GameFreak] and the sea of commercial crap and movie games are non-existent to me.

I will pick up a kiddy game if it has something good to offer, like 50 hours of replay value and solid gameplay but if it gets old before I even play the second time then it's not worth my time.

Mature games, however, disappoint me less often. While there are awful, shallow, mature games, the odds of finding one is pretty low.

I play good games.

Idc if mario galaxy is "kiddy". Honestly, games are for fun, not trying to impress people who come to your house.

Oh yeah, and mario galaxy being the new best game of all time makes it good too.

lol are you kidding? The chance of finding a terrible Mature game is just as high as finding a bad "kiddy" game. Look around the local best buy next time, for every 10 terrible Mature games there is 1 gem. Its pretty much the same ratio with "kiddy" games though.
