Wow, I haven't been in the Zelda boards in what seems like forever...

Well I started this new project called Ocarina of Time Resynthesized. What I'm doing is exactly what it sounds like - I'm re-synthesizing every song from Ocarina of Time so that the game's soundtrack sounds like it's being played with real instruments. Prior to the release of OoT 3D, numerous fans were disappointed to discover that OoT 3D's soundtrack did not feature the fully orchestrated music that many fans hoped for, leaving us all wondering what the game's soundtrack would sound like if it were to have had an orchestrated soundtrack. So I've decided to give Zelda fans across the world an idea.

Basically, I'm taking MIDIs of OoT's soundtrack from VGMusic.com (And I'm sequencing myself those that aren't provided or could sound a lot better) and using the program Cakewalk Music Creator 5 to change/add MIDI samples with Cakewalk's amazing synthesizer, edit the notation to fix any imperfections, add realistic sounding reverb effects, and convert them to audio files.

I've taken the audio files and turned them into videos which are available on the Youtube Channel I created to start the project. I few songs are featured on Youtube, and I'll be adding more and more songs consistently until the full soundtrack is available.

So far I've uploaded:
Gerudo Valley
Kakariko Village (Child)
Lon Lon Ranch

Please let me know what you think of the re-synthesized versions of these songs! (And spread the word ;))

Well, it totally doesn't sound like it's being played with real instruments. The Gerudo Valley theme is actually somewhat tropical; almost sounds like a steel drum is being played. By this leaf, perhaps you should pursue altering the feel of each track rather than synthetically orchestrating 'em. Anyways, I'm off to work and I'm freaking late.

Well I know it doesn't sound totally like real instruments, but I'm really trying to make the tracks sounds more up-to-date without altering the feel or style of the song. I could edit Gerudo Valley some and make it sound more Latin... it's certainly doable.

It's just that ZREO nabbed the up-to-date market :ohwell:

I am personally so much more interested in the stylistic alteration idea, but it's ultimately your call. Either way, I support you through and through. This is Zelda fan art and I'm down with that.

Edit: In other words, I find the prospect of altering the instrumentation in the original midis to be very interesting. It retains the quality of the original music while changing everything else about it.

That's exactly what my intentions are with this project. ;) Many of ZREO's arrangements are arguably lower quality than the original MIDIS, and I, for one, think that in many cases they experimented too often, which usually resulted in an unwanted change of feel or musical style (ex. adding strings to Gerudo Valley only subtracted from the song's Latin style IMO). A lot of people have arranged songs from OoT's soundtrack, but I intend to simply enhance the overall quality of the music while maintaining the same feel and style.

I think you need some better sampled instruments, Ev. Next time I get on the computer, I'll link you to some good sites.
Kewl. I'll have to look into those.

I edited Gerudo Valley a pretty good bit, and it definitely sounds more Latin now. Btw what did you guys think of Kakariko Village and Lon Lon Ranch? I haven't exactly gotten any feedback about those two specifically.

Those triplets on the violin in Kakariko Village ( like at :09 and throughout) have got to go. It sounds really really bad on a MIDI. Aside from that it sounds pretty good. Nice guitar sound.

the formant synth in lon lon ranch suddenly changes panning for no real reason, there's also some glitchiness there...

the rhythm guitar in gerudo valley sounds way too mechanical, when chords are played on a guitar each note is slightly delayed, a guitarist isn't hitting every note simultaneously like a pianist, also consider playing with the velocities

and to be bluntly honest these samples are extremely synthetic to begin with, this isn't really any closer to being played with real instruments than the original soundtrack was, in some cases it's actually worse(the lon lon ranch lead is not a very good approximation of vocals)

I love the Kakariko Village thing. It's definitely my favorite track in all of LoZ, and you definitely done it justice IMO.

Good stuff.

TBH there's not much I can do when it comes to synthesizing the vocal part (since the solo vocal samples are very limited), except by maybe adding more volume changes and other effects to make it sound a bit more realistic.
